In the the quest for more power, personally I would rather opt for a lada engine with some extra cc than for an engine swap due to less mounting and compatibility issuses.

Hi Ronnie and Marius
Maybe these posts about a engine kit can be moved to a m=new thread??

Personally, I am not interested in boring a Lada engine bigger 83mm, therefore I did not even look further at the list...

Hi all I would not do the conversion to a good engine and I agree with those which Fanus wrote . You imagine, to do such a conversion, have paid + - 2000 euros and the conversion to be a failure, eg to burns oils . After that everything will be thrown to the scrap heap. Anyway ..... For the conversion are needed..... The conversion in the block, the conversion of the cylinder head,( I don't know what exactly ), adjustable camshaft gear, and change the program of the electronic control module. ( here there are not niva 1700 with carburators, but only TBI or MPFI). .......the results are .... 103-105 hp and torque ?? ???unknown. PS. I would prefer a 4age efi ;D cheers! Dimitris

Hi Ari/Dimitris, Making other engines fit to a Niva gearbox is not a black art anymore. It is also very much cheaper than one would think. It is of course an altogether different story in Greece if the government does not smile on this practice! A very valid point Ari made is that the correct engine should be mated to a Niva. It must however be said that you will not easily go wrong with the newer generation motors in the 1600 to 1800 range, due to the massive difference in output (power and torque) of the new engines. Even the new relatively small turbo-diesels deliver excellent torque over a wide rev range (starting low), and even with the turbo engines you do not have a situation where huge power is dumped over a narrow rev range (tractability). I can vouch for a "4age efi" in more than one 4 x 4 conversion. If you can pull a six sleeper caravan with a Suzuki 410 fitted with this 1600 engine weekend after weekend to the dam on the high-veld (thin air - high altitude = less power) it can only be because there is ample torque and the engine is properly mated to the gearbox/drivetrain. The supercharged 1600 variant of this engine obviously gives a lot more torque and +- 100 kw at that, and it is a free revving reliable engine. To turbo it is a piece of cake! I obviously opted to supercharge my Niva engine rather than fitting the "4age efi" or supercharged 1600, but it worked out much more expensive to make an old generation motor markedly more powerful and keep it reliable. Regards, Fanus

Hi Darius / Fanus Sorry about this late response to your questions / remarks about the Fiat engine. Darius, the Fiat engine is about ready to be installed to my Lada - I just need to put the timing belt Cover back in place, and has to fabricate a clamp to hold the Lada distributor in place. I will also order a K & N Air cleaner from the US within the next week : Fanus, I decided to rebuilt my Lada's original engine as well. The engine has been stripped and I was getting worried about the loose components which were scattered all over the place. Things would just get lost or damaged if I did not give serious attention to the engine now. I still hope to find a good Lada body, to install the engine somewhere in future. Danie

Thanks Darius / Trev - I cant wait hearing the engine bursting back to life again.... Spikes, these Fiat engines has got the old type point system, and it makes life a lot easier rather to install an electronic ignition system. More info about the Lada distributor mod can be found here: locsa.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=544&page=8Trev and Bobby are already using this Lada (electronic ignition) modification on their Fiat engines, and it works like a charm. Regards Danie

Danie in my opinion your Niva will be one of the best in the country when finished. What colour are you planning for the body?

Hi Charles / Darius Charles you might be very disappointed ! The engine bay will be painter matt black - which should brightens up the red engine. For the time being the body will be painted with black oxide - because I am thinking of getting a local signage company involved to "wrap" the Lada with a cover which will look like this : Darius, Rome has not been built in one day only - neither my Lada . ;D Regards Danie

Danie that shounds like my tipe of paint job. My Niva will get painted this year aswell. Most likely blue again but a darker blue. Also it will be enamel paint. Cheaper and faster than auto paint.
Or I might just get a 5l aluminium paint and a brush...

Hi Darryn
I think the red engine with black engine bay should make a perfect picture......
But I think the bonnet will be opened most of the time - and I will just be staring at the engine . ;D
