Looking good Danie. You will be needing the power steering:)

Thanks Darryn / Spikes.
Yes, when I decided to buy the Bulldogs I initially thought that I could use my spare steering box , in case the one one my Lada packs up - but since Ruan told us about his mod , I started getting the Cressida 'box itch all over again...
Should the Cressida power steering mod works well, at least one of my standard steering boxes will be up for grabs.

The steering isn't that heavy that you need power steering.

Hi Ari
A bit heavier steering would not be the end of the world for me for the time being - but I thought after the next ten years I might have other needs.
I would prefer a power steering mod, than putting skinny tyres back on my Lada anyway...

Got the Cressida power steering box today . ;D Since I have ordered the 'box I was not sure what to expect, but today I really got exited after some observations - the steering box is as smooth as a baby's butt, and seem to be in perfect condition ! The pitman arm at my spare steering box (at the right) will be modified and fitted to the Cressida steering box: @ Ruan Could you please tell me which is the Inlet, and which is Outlet connection at this pic? Many thanks Danie

Thanks Ruan, I have only had a quick look at the holes, and I thought the hole sizes are the same .

Then u just post it back when u are done. Wont need it soon the car is not running and wont be for the next few months. Ruan

Hi Ruan
Thanks for the info.
Regarding the mounting plate - would you be able rather to send close pics of your mounting plate while it is bolted to the engine. ? Or you could just let me know how (to which bolts) the plate has been mounted to the engine. I think I do have a fairly good idea about what needs to be done, so the template is not all that important.
I would like to discuss the Cressida pitman arm though - so if you don't mind, I would appreciate your cell number by PM. Please let me know about a suitable time to phone you during the day, or whatever time will suit you.
Many thanks.

Today I took the Cressida and Lada steering boxes to a local gear cutting company - they will fabricate suitable splines for the Lada Pittman arm, and I should get the modified Pittman arm back within the next two weeks.

Danie I'm glad to here you are doing it that way. Welding on a Pittman arm is just stupid.

Sounds good Danie. Is the Cressida shaft a larger diameter to the Lada's or do they have to build up the Pittman arm before cutting the new splines?

hi Charles / Conrad
Charles, I was very tempted to go the welding route - but fortunately there are still honest people in this world, and one of them has convinced me rather to go the professional route.....
Conrad, the spline shafts are tapered, and one of the guys at the engineering firm took measurements at the upper end on both shafts - the measurement seem to be the same, but I assume the splines will be different.
Yesterday I tried to remove the Pittman on the Lada 'box, without success - so I was not able to compare measurements on the different shafts. The guy at the engineering firm has assured me that they do have proper equipment to remove the Pittman arm.

Removing a pittman arm on a steering bow while it is in place is nearly impossible. If it is out you can get it off most of the time. Still a mission most of the time.

Got the Cressida 'box with modified Lada Pittman arm back on Friday : A bush with tapered inner splines has been fabricated by Trident Gear, 208 Bluff Rd, Jacobs, (Durban) - a company who specialize in cutting all sorts of gears. The bush has been press fitted into the Lada Pittman arm, and tack welded as well. Trident Gear has done a perfect job - there is absolutely no play on the Lada Pittman arm, when fitted to the Cressida 'box ! Danie Danie

Hi Danie
That is great news. Have you considered using a electric hydraulic powersteering pump instead of a normal one?

Charles that may keep some space open for a aircon later. I still need to post a few photos of the mounting plate. Forgot about it completely.

Charles, I did not even know about the existence of electric hydraulic steering pumps, and was planning to use the normal Skyline one in my possession. I have already ordered a steel mounting plate from a local Laser cut firm as well.
Problem is, we have just received an order to build a large number of big machines for a big mining company - and I already started running around like a beheaded chicken at work. At the moment I don't think I will have the time or energy to work on this modification on the shorter term.
For the time being I will just put the Lada together as is, because I am keen to get it going again.

Hi Danie
Most small/medium cars since about 2009 have been fitted with electric hydraulic pumps for the steering, should be plentiful on the second-hand spares market or the scrap steel market even
Would definitely consider it being a better conversion than a belt driven pump.
