Hi all
What oils do you use? Do you think I can use 75w90 in the gearbox and tc and 85w140 in the diffs? That is what we use at work on all the vehicles. Except the X-trails, they need 80w90 in the rear diff for the clutch, and the vehicles with Lsd diffs we use LSX oil.

I will check tomorrow if it is Gl4. We buy our oils direct from Castrol. I think 75w90 in the gearbox and tc and 85w140 in the diffs should be fine seeing as we use it in all vehicles as reccomended by Nissan SA.

Hi Duane
Try and see if you cant buy direct from castrol. Or otherwise go to a Nissan garage and ask if they use it. I think all Nissan garages gets supplied by castrol.

Hi Duane
The oils should be fine. If you often travel long distances in hot weather conditions it might be better to get 85 W 140 oil for the Gearbox.

Hi Charles
I think you should stick with 90 in the gearbox and 140 in the diff - should be just fine. At the moment I have GL4 in the GB - but I'm not entirely convinced that it is the correct oil.

Hi All.
I use Castrol 75W90 GL4 in the whole driveline for the last year and happy with it. Before that I used Midas 80W90 GL5.

I don't want to knock any brand of oil but one should ALWAYS try to get the best quality minaral oils. Some oils are recycled and not very "clean" - these oils normally cause a lot of sludge in the engine and may even add to wear and tear.

Hi Marius
I know that the Midas oil range is recycled oil. I will never use that. You must smell how it stinks. I think I will go with 75w90 in the boxes and 85w140 in the diffs.
Charles
P.s Never use ATF in a box to solve sticky gears. Makes the box unrepairable when it breaks.

85w140 is too thick for a gearbox. My mistake , it's the other way round - 85w140 for the diffs, gearbox oil should be fine. Regards Danie

Hi Duane
I have heard of it. It is to improve gearshift if the gears start to get sticky. Some guys even use just atf. I dont like it at alll. It doesn't fix the proble it just hides it. Like the guy who works with me. He drives a Skyline RB30, the gearbox was noisy so he drained the oil and put in 1l less 75w90 and added 1l 85w140 and a handfull of wheelbearing grease. Now the box is quiet, but the question is for how long.

I run the same oil in the diffs and transfer case, which I think is 90/140 penrite LSD oil, Two reasons, one I would love to be able to use one oil for the whole vehicle but it dosent work like that and two the transfer case needs a good oil to keep the noise down from the straight cut gears!! Castrol VMX-M in the gearbox

Hi Charles
When I was at Nissan you were talking about HX ? shell oils and today I saw an 15W40 HX5 and 20W50 HX3, what is the difference?
The lada manuel reccomends !5W40 for temperature ranges of -20 to +45 degrees.

Hi Ari
In simple terms Hx5 is diesel oil and the hx3 is petrol. I prefer the Hx3. We use diesel oil at work also. The 20w50 is too thin. I run diesel oil in my conquest also.

Hi Charles.
The 15W40 HX5 is indead a diesel oil and is thinner than the 20W50 HX3. The HX5 is designed for turbo diesels and also got an additive in to clean the diesel engine sleeves but thin enough to lubricate the turbo bearings. Diesel oil can be used in petrol engines but not petrol engine oil in diesels.
I use Castrol Magnetec in my Lada and Landy which is a 10W40 oil.
Regards.
