Hi Marius
I used 85 / 140 when I changed mine last time. I did not overfill as the 85 means it is 85 when cold and 140 when hot. There should be no need to overfill when using a multigrade like this, unless of course you want to and I see no problem with this.

Hi Marius Unless you are using a multi grade as Ronnie suggested, I'd think you MAY actually suffer from under lubrication until the oil is hot. My option would be the 85/140. Regards Spikes

Hi Ronnie As a general rule I would not overfill just to protect the seals. I will wait and see what happens. My GB is still overfilled with around 1.7 liters and it seems fine now after some oil came through the gear leaver boot. I am actually thinking of overfilling slightly on the front and rear diffs for the same reason - still thinking Regards Marius

Marius I think tje only real problem you can get is that the seals could start leaking.

Hey Marius- all my diffs are overfilled at the moment and very little leaking (only on the TC, but this from the seals around rails for the gear levers). I was wondering: my gearbox whines a lot, at all revs and speeds. I'm using Castrol BOT 130 and so far it's been great, but would using a thicker oil cause my box to be a little quieter? No one has said that this oil isn't good for the box, but could there be a better alternative?

Hi Darryn
!30 is to thick for the gearbox, and Ventz has already commented about this. He nearly had a heart attack when he THOUGHT I was going to use it in mine.

Huh? I thought BOT 120 (made a mistake with the labelling) was thin stuff? Sometimes I cringe at my inattentiveness... What should I use?

Hi Darryn
The whine you hear is mostly from the TC - straight cut gears makes the noise. Bobby thinks the 85/140 cuts down on the noise quite a bit. I will give it a test drive soon.
The 130 in the GB might not be such a good idea. I would rather use something like 80/90. I have GL-4 spec in the box but I am sure GL-5 is just fine.

Hi all
I took the Niva for a little test run yesterday and from what I can tell there is definitely less whine coming from the TC. I will run a little longer today and see/hear how it goes.

What grade of oil are you using?
I used 75w90 GL4

Hi Juran
That is the correct oil - I also have GL-4 spec in the GBox but I am not entirely convinced - I think it should be GL-5. I will post my question in this regard in the Gearbox thread.

Hi Juran
I think the last time I used EP90 GL4. The diffs and the transfer I used 85/ 140.

I also do not over the gearbox. Even when Jan repaired the box it was not overfill.
I use Castrol 75W90 in the gearbox and transfer and 80W90 in the diffs.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gear_oilAPI GL4 as a specification has been replaced / superceeded by API GL5 for many years now. Very simply - Use the HIGHEST specification oil that you can afford. At the Moderators - Should there possibly be a thread only on lubricant specifiactions etc. I am more than willing to assist and provide guidance.

Vincent as far as I know the GL4 spec is specifically for older design cars with yellow metal parts and is recommended by many as the correct spec for the gear box.
I have used a good quality GL5 spec in my box for years until I changed to GL4 due to availability issues of the brand that I used.
AUTOVAZ recommends GL5 in the box and I have a feeling it is probably the better spec to use. I will wait until my next oil change and see what the oil looks like.

Hi Marius
I am sure Vincent will answer you, but when I asked him the question the answer was that the GL5 has a higher spec, and it is preferable to use the highest spec available. Vincent specializes in oil and the oil industry so just wait for his reply and explanation.

I also mentioned the subject of overfilling the gear box and the answer from Vincent was it is unnecessary if the correct spec of oil is used.

Hi Vincent/Ronnie We should actually have this conversation here >> locsa.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=technical&action=display&thread=299Ronnie if you want you can move the oil related stuff into the oil thread. Vincent I am looking forward to your input - I would also like more info on what grease should be used where if possible? Well ANY comment on what lube to use where will be great! Lot's of homework for you ;D Regards Marius

Hi Ronnie
If the members want to submit to me their lubircants used in a PM, I will be able to easily compile the list. My reccmmendations will be based on specifications and how they relate to the application rather than being brand specific. We put in what best suits our pocket - I want to ensure that forum members are getting the best performance levels for their buck.

Hi Vincent
I have moved you post to the oil thread.
I think you will be able to recommend the most suitable oils for the Niva if you simply use this list. Engine, front and rear diff, gearbox, transfer case, and the most suitable grease for the wheel bearings and track rod ends etc for the people who have drilled them and fitted grease nipples.

Hi All,
Thanks for the work Ronnie in moving the oil related posts into this dedicated post.
A few points to start with.
A multigrade oil (Engine or diff) has viscosity improvers in it to change the rate of change that an oil will have across a given operating temperature change. The temperatures that the viscosity is measured at is also different for a mono grade and a multi grade oil. SAE 90 measured at 40 Deg C and at 100 Deg C 70W-90 measured at -15 Deg C and at 100 Deg C
What the multigrade does is behaves like a lower viscosity at the lower temperature (Jaco from Standerton alluded to this as gear changes are easier). The W stands for Winter and is really used in places like Russia, Siberia and even Bethlehem where it gets DAMN cold. Down at the KZN coast (Lucky us) we would not need a W spec oil as temperatures very rarely fall below 12 Deg C.
Good multigrade oils have the added benefit of being able to reduce consumption - But this is very difficult to quantify as we tend to push the pedal a little bit harder and use up the extra available power.
I need to pop down to the local spares shop as I want to snap a few pics that will also help YOU, the reader, to evaluate an oil being offered by the spares saleman.
This will continue ;D

Every lubricant on sale in SA must have the following or similar information on the container. This happens to come off a Shell Helix synthetic 15W-40 engine oil. When you look at the specification, what we concern ourselves with is the SM/CF. The SM is the highest gasoline or petrol engine specification that the oil meets or exceeds. The CF is the highest diesel engine specification exceeded or met. I will post a seperate link to a fantastic site that clearly outlines what the alphabet REALLY means.
