Hi Charles
The 3 oil filters are Z87, Z123, and Z95 Don`t know which is which, you can check the listing for the length. Probably Z95 is the one you are looking for.

Thank you. Mine has a Z87 on. Dont like it because it is so small. Then again even the big Nissan Patrols 4.8l use a small oil filter. Same size as one on a 1400 Micra. So maybe size doesn't matter.

Z123 is the one on my Lada. Also easier to remember so that is what I will replace with Spikes

Hi Charles, Of the three numbers that Ronnie listed, take your pick. Accoring to the FRAM website all three of GUD filters will handle the volume put out by the Lada's oil pump at 4000rpm. As GUD's website was not as forthcoming with specfics as the FRAM site I cross refrenced as various spares suppliers and "Agent" gave me various part numbers. So take your pick Regrads all Spikes PS I see we are 100 strong now

Hi Charles.
I also use the Z123 and is the middle size filter. The Z95 is the long one and the Z87 is the short one.

Hi Guys, As far as the diff oils are concerned - I would use the 85W140, it is a GL5. I work at a Ford and Land Rover dealership, and this is what we use on the ford diffs. A thicker oil is always better in a diff, while too thick oil in a gearbox can cause difficult gearchange, especially in cold conditions. We had this on some Land Rover gearboxes, some of the models even use ATF in a manual box.

Hi Jaco
I recently changed to 140 in the diffs - from 90. I think it is probably the better oil to use in the diffs.
Bobby mentioned that he is using 140 in the TC - which could be an interesting option. Any views on that?

Well, this is pure guessing from my side - but if difficult gear changing is the only reason why 140 oils should not be used in Gearboxes, I think using it in Transfer Boxes might not be a bad idea at all.
The reason is very obvious - regular gear changes on the Transfer Box are not needed..
Also, it always makes sense to use a thicker oil when parts like bearings, etc. get warn. It is common knowledge that there are thicker oil for "high mileage" engines on the market - I guess the same rule applies to other components as well - like Transfer Boxes (and maybe Gearboxes ??) - if the Transfer Box (or Gearbox) is getting worn - just try a thicker oil..........

Hi Danie
I will definately consider using 140 in the TC - that will surely cut down on a lot of noise. Would like to know how long Bobby's run on 140?
Havn't heard from Andy in a while - wonder what he might think?

This is why I use diff oil in the T/C, Its heaps cheaper than VMX-M which Andy reqs. The T/C is a diff after all. The diff oil is blue so leaks are easy to find. It drastically reduces T/C noise from those straight cut gears. There dosent seem to be as much heat comeing from the T/C area with diff oil as opposed to VMX-M. Minimal different oil types needed. VMX-M is still used in the gearbox.
Andy has moved premises and only has unreliable dialup internet like 80% of Aust so he dosent frequent the forums, but he will be back!

Hi Charles.
I have used Shell Spirax 80W90 and Midas 80W90 on the drivetrain since I bought the Lada 5.5 years ago till December last year when I changed the gearbox, diffs and transfer to Castrol 75W90. The oils are excellent and had no problem with them. The castrol just ensure that the shift is smoother and softer even in the winter time.

Hi All Please find method of filling gb oil from top of gb. Some one asked about it some time ago. I found this instruction on "Lada wikki", which is a German website. The translation is a bit shaky, but I'm sure the pics will cover the rest. Des Attachments:

Hi Des
It is easier just to jack the one side of the vehicle up high. It is quicker than all the stripping required to get access from the top. Also there is no chance of someone removing the wrong set of nuts.

I AGREE JACKING UP IS EASIER BUT FROM THE TOP IS GOOD TO CHECK FOR ANY SMALL WEAR AND TEAR ON SELECTOR AND YOU CAN CHECK THE NUTS IF THEY HAVE COME LOOSE WHICH SOME TIMES MESSES WITH GEAR SELECTION

Hi all
I just changed the oil in the TC to 140. I also decided to overfill it with about 100ml.
The reason: My thinking is the thicker oil will take slightly longer to reach all the hard to get to areas in the TC - overfilling "slightly" might just speed up the process a little.
The 140 oil used is not to spec but I believe the thicker oil will give better protection in the long run and as Bobby pointed out - there will be less noise from the TC.
The diffs have been running on 140 for a little while now and it seems fine - the TC is basically another diff.
Any opnions on this issue would be appreciated.
Regards Marius
