Hi guys,
Nothing to do with everything that was fixed. I think these are issues outside the quote?
Ok, I got my car back yesterday. I drove it for a little while and suddenly felt like something was holding the wheel. Then a moment later, a huge thump noise and it was fine again....do you guys think it was the brakes that is just busy seating?
Ok, furthermore,
There is a leak on the transfer case? Is this easy to fix?
There is a noise when I start revving the car when in gear (accelerating) sounds like a vibrating plate?
Then, there is a wind / hum which is coming from the car when driving and when pulling away, a thumping noise from the diff (i think)
The car smells liek petrol inside when driving.
And the car turns like a truck!! It's super heavy, even when driving like 60 around a long bend!
I do not know if some of the stuff are just characteristics but I don't wanna break anything out of stupidity.
Thanks guys
Juran

Hi Juran
It was probably the rear brakes - so should be fine. When they get wet apply the brakes for a few seconds to dry them.
The TC is real easy to take down.
Don't know about the noise = could be something that needs tightening?
The wind/hum could even be a bearing or a CV - check oil levels in the diff - hopefully it is the correct grade.
The petrol smell - is probably a broken separator box on the right hand side. You can remove the separator and hopefully you can find a T fitting to connect the pipes.
The Niva is quite heavy on the stearing - if your tyres are larger than 175 - it will get much worse. If your tyres are any larger than 205 you might end up with a broken steering box.

Hi Juran
The hum / wine could be the tyres, the noise when accelarating sounds like you need to set the tappets (easy) the petrol inside is possibly perished fuel breather pipes the bad turning is tyres and possibly grease on the ball joint(lack thereof)
I'm not sure about the T/C , mine is oily underneath with some droplets but the level doesnt drop and there are no marks where I park)

Hi Juran
The petrol smell is almost certainly the separator as already mentioned. If the plastic connections are not already broken on the separator be very careful when connecting or disconnecting pipes as they break easily.Mine were also breaking off and I used hot melt glue (plenty) to try to seal them. Hot melt is not supposed to be used where petrol is involved as it reacts with the petrol. Mine so far is fine, probably about 7 months since it was done. The transfer box only has 3 seals and a flat plate with a gasket so should be easy to fix. Noises are not so easy when you cannot listen to them. If you are near Hercules he may be able to help as he does servicing etc from home.

Hi Juran
There's a serious leak somewhere near the front ,middle of your lada. I found steering box, gearbox, transfer box , diff oil on my driveway after you left. I cant tell the difference as they all use the same oil. The steering joints probaly need nipples and some grease. You should maybe think about setting the cluch lower, you do this on the left side of the GB
Hi to the rest
His whine is coming from the GB or T/C area.
Ari
PS His tunnel is very hot, as it was burning my foot ( I was driving bare foot ) every time I changed gear.

Hi Juran When I repaired the vapour seperator on my Lada(same fuel smell as you describe) I found that the fuellines from the tank to the seperator were hard and brittle. I replaced them with pipes from a brake and clutch dealership (to get the right inner diameter) Be careful when you remove the original pipes as there are two small ferrules just before the pipes connect to the seperator. They are there to ensure only vapours pass into the vapour box. Droplets of fuel runs back towards the tank. I fixed the inlet pipes of the box with Q-bond. I strengthened the inlet pipes with the tube part of pop rivet. Sofar all is fine 3000km on and no more smell of fuel in the car. I considered Ari's solution of the t-peice at that time but the thir pipe out of the vapour box vents into the fuel filler and I think it also ensures that no vacuum build up in the tank Regards Spikes

Hi Juran
As far as I understand, you collected your Lada from Jan yesterday. You also spend a lot of money for a professional service.
The car has been at Jan's place for a couple of days, so I assumed it leaked oil at his premises as well.
As professional Lada Agent who takes his customer's interest at heart, I assume Jan gave you some good advice regarding the oil leak???

Hi Juran.
The petrol smell is coming from the fuel pipes and /or vapor box as the fuel tank is mounted inside the vehicle. The other problems can be that the filler pipe connected to the tank are cracked. This is caused by over tightening the fuel cap. The other reason is that the overflow leaks into the vehicle if the rubber around the filler pipe does not seal properly, also any spillage by a petrol pump attendant can leak into the vehicle if the rubber not sealing properly around the filler neck.
The hard steering can be caused by incorrect wheel alignment which make the steering hard to turn. The other problem can be damaged upper and lower ball joints on one or both wheels. I run 205 tyres and wheel alignment set at 0 degrees, and the steering is as light as you can get when driving.
My Lada had the same type whining as the series type Land Rovers and were solved when change-ing the diff and transmission oils to Castrol 75W90 GL4. Even the gear shift is much easier ans smoother.
Your oil leak is properly the gearbox sump gasket that is leaking or the gearbox is overfilled and pushing out oil thru the seals. The transfer box seals is unfortunate only available from the agents.
You also more than welcome to contact me or pay me a visit in Benoni.
Regards.
Hercules
PS. Checked if the heater valve is not stucked in the open position and caused hot heat blowing in over the tunnel and on your feet as the Lada got one mother of all hot heaters installed.

Hi Guys
Thanks for the replies so far...I have decided to chech everything on the car this weekend....including what Jan did!
Danie, I do not know where it came from but I am quite sure it came from the back!
I have been trying to find out what are all the noises and where are the coming from but with no luck yet!
Like I said, there is a whine noise coming from either the diff, transfer box or gearbox - It starts at about 50 - 60km per hour and goes away at around 100km per hour.
Regarding the transfer case leaking, there is quite a huge leak which was not there before it went to Jan, he said the transfer case was dry so I need to check it out. I want to do this, this weekend? What do I need to fix this? I think one of you guys said that I need 3 seals and a gasket? Where can I buy that?
Then, when I pull away, sometimes there is a shudder? But it does not feel like it's coming from the clutch?
And there is a big vibration coming from somewhere? It almost sounds like resonance when you have a crappy aftermarket exhaust on your car?
I have inspected some of the stuff done by Centurion Lada:
A major service was just one of the things on the list. Now I do not know what that entails but my aircleaner for one does not look new at all! The air cleaner housing has dirt all over it and nothing is cleaned on the carb etc.
I paid for wheelnuts, which is second hand and one of them not even the same size.
Stabalizer bar is second hand.
This is what I have checked so far and will give feedback on the other stuff during the cousre of the weekend.
Then, I went to Ari yesterday to go and pick up my tyres. They are super duper awesome! Knobbies (Russian). I tsounds like the world is coming to an end while driving.....hahahah...but it puts a smile on my face!!!
Thank you all for the help sofar....!!
PS. Danie, I only got a note from them stating that there is a leak on the transfer box. I did not really speak to Jan, he just kept on bad mouthing the car and that no one knows how to take care of their lada's and how much money it's going to cost me to fix. I spoke to Michelle more, which were much more pleasant to deal with. None of the things that is still to do where advised on ie. what the problem could be? Only that it needs to be fixed!
I am going to start this weekend with the oil leak if I can, and work my way through the car during the next couple of weekends. But Jan is not going to see me again! After spending 10k I would expect a little more! Even if it's professional advice?
Does anyone have those seals and the gasket? Or do I need to get it from Jan?

Hi Juran
The seals for the transfer shaft outputs are 35.8 x 68 x 10 and I believe are an odd size and only available from the agents. The gasket you can buy from the agents or buy gasket paper from the local spares shop and make your own. If he did not quote you for second hand he should fit new items like any other garage.

Hi Juran
I would advice you to contact Ventz in Pietermaritzburg (082 9235055) regarding the seals. Ventz is an active member of this Forum / club - therefore I believe we should try to support him as far as possible.
If the thumping noise indeed came from the rear axle, I think you should remove the rear wheels, as well as the brake drums. You have mentioned that Jan had to work on the rear axle (leaking oil) - he probably replaced the O rings , and therefore had to remove the brake shoes..........I would double check whether a brake shoe or any other component has not came loose now........one never knows.
Regards
Danie

Yes Hercules that is a good enough reason to cr :op your pants Juran - as Ronnie mentioned you can buy the gasket paper and DIY it. I personally don't like it and use Red Devil gasket maker. Only problem is you have to redo it everytime you work on something - but if you apply it correctly it seals perfectly. The other thing I like to use is the cork type gasket you can also DIY. Get the thin one. Quite expensive but if treated well it will last a lifetime. The thicker one works very well as a head gasket or for the cover at the bottom of the gearbox. You might be very lucky with the oil leak on the TC - it could be from the inspection cover near the top - perhaps that gasket got damaged? You can also use cork here. Also check all the nuts if they are tight on the TC - but don't overdo that. If there is only a little oil leaking from the rear sideshaft - you could try a thicker oil on the diff. I had a small leak in the front and got sorted with the thicker diff oil. Good luck and let us know. Marius

Hi Juran My wife spent R60000 with Jan and I was anything but happy. As Long as we all learn from our mistakes and do not let it spoil the enjoyment of our Lada. Just work your way slowly through the things you are not happy with. There is no hurry Ronnie

Hi Marius When you said to use the cork for a head gasket I hope you meant for the valve cover ;D also never over tighten the cork so it goes flat! Just tighten it enough, you can always re tighten slightly if it is weeping. Ronnie

Jeez Juran... I'm sorry you got "stamp"ed like that from jan. I'm the moer in. Anyway, if you're in the Pretoria area and need a hand, just speak to my wife nicely and maybe she'll let me out of the house to help you.
The vibration on acceleration- have to checked the alignment of the transfer case?

Hi Juran
Regarding the thumping noise again: Before you remove the rear wheels and drums, I would advice you to put the High / Low gearlever in neutral, and lift the rear axle (both wheels) from the ground.
Then rotate the wheels by hand - you might be able to locate the source of the problem by listening to strange noises (brake drums, diff, or transfer box).
Regards

Hi Juran
I've remembered how to set the steering looseness, You look under the brake and clutch master cylinders for the steering box . on top of it there are 2 nuts, the small higher one is the fluid top up hole and the larger , lower nut is the setting nut.

Have you printed out the manuals yet??
They really help a lot and I have a few russian ones as well, they have photos in not drawings and are sometimes easier to work from.

Hey guys
Thanks for all the replies...
I have found the source of most of the problems. I had a huge vibration and noise which sounded like plate vibrating etc.
I checked the transfer case yesterday to inspect the leak and saw that the whole transfer case was loose and that all the bolts were stripped, I pulled the transfer case this morning to change the gasket on the diff-lock selector (if you call it that) on the transfer case. Most of the sides where you pull the part to the transfer case (insert the bolts) were broken off and were held together by gasket sealer. So I urgently need one of those housings or the whole diff lock selector?
Does anyone have a spare housing?
Otherwise, can I weld this at an engineering company?

Hi Juran. I do not know of any body got that housing, maybe Mike (Hotstuff) in Cape Town. His contact details is on the forum or sent him a PM. Otherwise I think you can weld up the housing with aluminium weld and remachine and drill the locating holes. Regards. Hercules PS: you can try Ventz also, should be cheaper than our other famous agent.

Hi Juran
Any possibility of sending a few close pics of the broken bolts which have been held in place by gasket sealer ?
Do you perhaps know whether a high speed test has been carried out on your Lada ?
I think it might make seance to strip the Transfer Box to see if any inner component failure (i.e bearing failure) did not cause the bolt threads to strip.
While you mentioned that the Lada's floor plates got very hot, I just wonder whether the oil level did not get too low, which then caused overheating problems, and finally caused inner component failure.
I would advice you rather to contact Hercules in this regard.
Regards
Danie

Hi Danie
The transfer case looks fine and it looks like it's in very good nick. The bolts on the body are stripped which bolt the transfer case to the car. I will post some pics in a few minutes.
