Hi Juran Your Niva looks good and for me it is the correct colour .As far as the leak goes do as I do and advise others to go else where to have work done. It is obvious this dealer is only interested in making money. He also gives a list on his web site showing what he does to his rebuilt vehicles and then does not do half of them . An after market exhaust should be no problem. (mine has one from the Agent in question.).I think 205 tyres are fine and would use them. I will post a picture at the end of Khumo 195 x 15 x 100s tyres. I don`t think your release bearing is associated with the whine, as if it is adjusted correctly is only in contact with the pressure plate when you press the clutch pedal. I hope you enjoy your Niva and have many enjoyable years driving it . Just keep it away from the money grabbing repair shop. Ronnie

Hi Charles
I have not got a clue what the offset is. Some one mentioned it recently so I am sure you will get an answer. These rims are standard Sidekick rims.

Hi Duane
I do not know. I even had a look on the Internet and could not see any info. I do know with this size of tyre my speedometer is completely accurate. If I was looking for tyres I would be looking for Contitrac as I find this a good all round tyre. I think Ari was using them and may comment.

Thanks for all the replies guys!!
Uhm....Correct me if I am wrong but this is how I see it....As soon as I engage the clutch, the whine goes away so it can't be the diffs / transfer case because it's still turning. So it must be something which stops working when the car is out of gear or the clutch in engaged...this means that it's possible the gearbox right? I do not want to break anything and would like to fix it before it's too late! Who's has done a gearbox rebuild? Who can do this? Except my good friend....cause I wont go there again! Would this be easy?
Oh yes, Ari, do you perhaps have the thread url for me on the exhausts on the aussie forum?
Thanks guys!

Hi Juran I think Darryn will be able to help you as I see he bought an overhaul kit from overseas. He either knows how to rebuild it or he is also learning. My knowledge there only extends to taking the box out which is not to difficult, as I managed it on my own The whine I will not comment on as I am not understanding what you are describing. IE at what speed etc. It is always difficult without actually hearing it.Take the shrouds off the levers and have someone drive while you get down with a hose to your ear and see if you can pinpoint where the noise is comming from. Ronnie.

Hi Juran Rebuilding is not a problem - taking it all off can take you a while though but I would say a weekend is more than enough time to do it - provided you have the right tools. If you run out of time there is always next weekend Regards Marius PS - the best person to work on your car is the one who paid for it.

Hi Juran
The url for the Aus forum is at the bottom of my signature.
The Conti's are good but if your offset is too much then they will rub in the wheel arches.

Hi Juran Marius is correct about the correct tools. To take the box out make sure you have a couple of very long extension bars and a universal joint for your socket set Ronnie

Hi Juran
Maybe the gearbox didn't have enough oil in at some stage and burnt the bearings, causing marks in the bearing. That is something i see alot at work and it causes a terrible whine.

Hi Juran
If the bearings are indeed slightly pitted, a slightly thicker Gearbox oil (like 80W140) should cause an improvement.

Hey dudes- my Lad is still at the gearbox guys, but I'll get it back tomorrow. Juran my good ol chap, it can only be bearings in the 'box, by what you describe... I'm posting now on the gearbox thread so that you can hear of my woes.
I'll help you get your gearbox out with pleasure, as long as the beer flows like wine... And you 'll have to be prepared to wait a week for parts. Count on it.

Hi Darryn, Thanks man...I appreciate it! As far as I can tell it must be the gearbox or the transfer case! I put the transfer case in neutral and started to drive the gearbox up to fifth and the faster the more whine! So Charles, I think it is one of the bearings! thanks for the advice...!!! Darryn, I think I would rather take the car to a specialist gearbox shop because it's my daily driver, so I think I'll buy all the parts beforehand! Can you maybe tell me what you bought? Which bearings to buy and what else? And where you boughtit from? Also, if I may ask...how much did the shop charge you for the rebuild? Thanks dude!!!

Or maybe someone else have done this? If anyone can give me a list of things to buy for the rebuild? All the bearings needed, seals etc? Also, does anyone know of a good gearbox shop? I do not want to step into the same trap with the other agent?!

I bought the bearing kit from LadaWorld- plus shipping it cost me R1080. This kit has every bearing in the box, plus the two oil seals- and they're made by a German company called MasterSport which is excellent quality. I got two syncro rings from Ventz, which cost R250 a pop. You haven't said anything about gears jumping out or problems synching the gears, so the bearings will be a good start. Unfortunately, you can only know exactly what spares you need when the box has been stripped.
The Valenti guys charged R3000 to take it out, strip it, reassemble and put back in. They seem to be pretty thorough, but that also makes them slow. Although I'm almost ripping out what little hair I have left, the inconvenience is worth it in the long run.

Hi Juran If you are thinking of ordering bearings, it might also be worthwhile to order selector forks as well.
The selector forks do wear by time, and it might be better to replace it while the box is going to get stripped. If the old forks are still in good condition, it should not be too difficult to find another owner who might be interested.
By the way , the selector forks are not made of Brass - it has a gold / yellow color, but it sticks to a magnet , and it loses that funny yellow color by time.......
Regards
Danie

Darryn, I went to LadaWorld, but on the site it says sold out:( Do you maybe have contact details for someone there? I sent a message through the site but I just want to make sure I speak to the right people.

Otherwise, an option might be to buy another box which isn't much more than the Russian kit. I saw one advertised on Gumtree. Des

HI I email the webmaster (Stig) and I must say that his response on his mails are very quick. We have chatted over email a couple of times now and he is very helpful! I am getting the gearbox bearing kit from him and also "sommer" decided to get one for the transfer case aswell.
He is out of stock at the moment so I will be receiving the stuff in about a month's time. Can't wait!!
Let's hope that this sorts out most of the problems!
Darryn, hows yours coming along? I wanna get together some time to exchange some knowledge etc and ofcourse have a beer or two.
Ciao Dudes

Hey guys, Took the Lada to Aardklop this weekend (First trip) but it was a stupid decision!!! The brearings in the gearbox are now FINISHED!! And hope I did not brake anything else!! But the gears feel fine though!!! THe car also just started to get very hot! And it never did that! So I think it's maybe the thermostat?? I don't know! I am now waiting for the bearings from LadaWorld...so she's going to be stationary for a while Darryn, where can I check out your restoration project? Ciao dudes
