Hi Juran
The boot will be available from either Ventz, Jan or Chris. I do not know if there is a aftermarket version available.
You are right about the CV - if ligned up correctly and greased propperly the bearings should hardly work up a sweat.

Hi Juran
Thinking about the broken lugs on your Transfer Box again, I assume that a faulty / badly worn CV joint could be the cause of the broken lugs as well.
If the Gearbox / Transfer Box alignment is way out of line - and the CV joint is in bad condition, (or when a back yard job is applicable) the lugs on the Transfer box cover will be submitted to excessive strain - and could cause a failure, like in your case.
To my mind you should ensure that that CV is in perfect condition........you could easily have similar problems in the near future if that CV joint is indeed faulty !
Regards
Danie

Hi Juran When I stripped the cv on the intermediate shaft the grease was like a hard rubber compound. After I had cleaned it and regreased it, it appeared to be fine. The last time I had it out I noticed there was no play when twisting it, but when you pull on it there is about 1mm of play. I will be interested how you get on with yours. Remember the intermediate shaft is all that keeps the transfer box upright. At the moment the only thing spoiling my Lada is the vibration which I thought was acceptable until I was on the Hiway Ronnie

Hi Marius
Yes there is vibration more or less from 60 to 120. Sorry Danie that is 10 more than you like ;D. It was after that I discovered the play, end to end on the C/V.

Hi Ronnie
Most of my vibration at the moment is from wear on my front left tyre which will hopefully be fixed with a replacement. Normally I have some vibration at 110 which is - like Danie - my cruising speed - but it always seems to pan out over a short distance.

Has anyone here tried the double cv joint mod to replace the rubber dougnut? As seen on Baxters.

Hi juran
I see Bob mentioned that He seems to remember that a golf CV is the same, worth having a look. I would imagine it would be the original Golf.

Hi Charles
I don`t think so as the cost would be high and you don`t know if it would help. There is so little movement there that I think you may as well put in a solid connection instead of the doughnut, at a much smaller cost. I think it was Juran who was going to try this.

Hi Charles
The other route is to do what Darryn did - he got hold of the 1600 intermediate with the UJoint at a good price but you have to make some adaptions AND you will have more vibration - that is why the Russians replaced it with the CV type.
One other option is to order this part from Russia or the EU - it will be a lot cheaper.

Hi Charles If everything is ligned up correctly and everything is greased properly - there will be very little vibration left. Mostly around 110. One source of vibration you will struggle to get rid of is the front diff as it is mounted directly onto the engine. The diesel version has a separate mounting that solves the problem. Any bad vibration is a problem - you will feel it in your bones Regards Marius

Hi Marius and Charles It is hard to understand why a universal intermediate shaft gives more vibration than a CV type when the darn thing is running in a straight line . No doubt some one has an answer to that one Ronnie

Hi All
If you use your Lada every day vibrations and rattles / squeaks are most annoying and can drive you to despair.

Hi Ronnie
A universal joint gives more vibration because of its shape. Its la square that is spinning,it will always be slighty off balance. A CV on the otherhand is round and more balanced. Thus when it spins it has equal weight on all sides. Hope that makes sense.
I know about rattles driving you nuts. I once had my cars whole dash out because of one small rattle. In my opinion a rattle doesnt have to be there. I must say that I have seen people that can't be bothered with a rattle. I don't know how they do it. It drives me nuts.

Hi Juran You really should take it back and make him fix the leak again. After it is fixed you will not need to return there as you can do all your own work Ronnie

Hey Guys I am sorry about the qualtiy of the pcs.....just been so hectic...did not even have time to work on my Lada this weekend.... I finshed the transfer case last week and did not get a new cv for the transfer case....I took the cv to an engineer who took out the inner casing, welded it up again and just polished it for me....MUCH BETTER!!! So that is working perfectly for now!! And he did it for free Ronnie, to tell you about the leak on the back wheel....I was there and they told me that they are not going to fix it because I drove the car home, which is about 15km with the big tyres (205's) and that is why it's leaking again!! So I WILL get all the facts together and share!! EVERYWHERE!!!!!!! I finally got the car goign again!!! And she is running very smoothly!!! There is almost no vibration anymore! The only thing I am trying to fix now is the whine! I do not know where this is coming from....It starts when I accelerate and you can hardly hear it when I take my foot off the accelerator...!! And you can hear it very slightly when decelerating in gear! It also goes away completely when I engage the clutch! I have checked all the oil of the diffs, transfer case and gearbox! Does anyone know? Or maybe had a similar eperience? I can't think that it could be the diffs because of the clutch? Don't you guys think it's the clutch? Release bearing?? I have no clue....and the problem is that it's getting worse!! Thanks for all the helpmso far...!!! And sorry once again for being so quite!! Ciao Juran

Hi Darryn Thanks man!! The body work is awesome!! And the car is very clean!! The only thing is that someone worked on the car a lot!! And a lot of the problems are due to lcak of good workmanship So I just need to go through everything one at a time and redo everything they worked on! She's not far from being mechanically sound though!! I think

Hi Ari, yes...She needed some serious cleaning!!! I took out heaps of mud out the inside of the car!! I also found 2 wasp nests! Some spider eggs...a few marbles and some broken beer bottles I stripped out the back side panels and also the rear seat! I have some awesome plans coming up! PS...I forgot to ask...has anyone put an aftermarket exhaust on their ladas? I want one of my buddies who owns tyre and exhaust city in menlyn to manufacture a stainless steel exhaust for me but I do not want to burn the valves! Havr anyone done this? Do you guys have a spec or a plan?

Should be ok, my exhaust from the gearbox is from a normal exhaust place, though on the Aus forum they say tha 50mm is the max size you should go.

Juran Hi Juran My Lada has done more than 60 000 kms with 205 tyres fitted on deep dish rims - and I do not have any problems with oil leaks ! You could also get a professional report to make sure ........report them at the "Hello Peter " website - let's see whether they have the guts to respond........ It might be also worthwhile to keep all invoices - perhaps you will be able to make use of the Consumers Protection Act which will kick off next month...... The whining noise might be the normal noise from the Transfer Box - I would advice you to let another owner just listen ...... Regards Danie
