Hi Juran.
It is difficult to say if you can weld the lugs back on. The only people that can tell is the engineering place that do alum weld. after welding you need to machine the face again so that it is flat and true.

The damage on the TC is quite high up - strange that nothing else got hit. The TC was obviously down when this happened - probably vented frustration

Hi Juran
I would rather try to find another cover - aluminium welding is usually quite expensive, and not all welders are able to do specialised aluminium welding.
The shiny part of the broken lug on the left (first pic) indicates a fresh break - it probably broke off when you heard the thumping noise. The dull / rusty look where the second lug (fist pic) broke off, indicates that that piece broke off at an earlier stage - before you bought the Lada.
By having a close look at the third pic, it looks like if somebody has used an Epoxy to glue those lugs to the housing ! Also, the red Gasket Maker looks very fresh and clean - somebody has probably worked on the Transfer Box very recently........
I would advice you to have a proper look at all components at the rear axle as well - diff, as well as inner components of the brake drums. The reason - if there is a major problem at the diff, or brake drums, the engine will try to drive the Lada forward, while the wheels will try to brake the car. This could cause failures of Transfer Box components (like the broken cover)as well.
You have mentioned that at one stage it felt like something was "holding" the Lada, before you heard the thumping noise, and this makes me think that a failure of another component caused the damage to the Transfer box cover.......
Sorry about this comments, but to my mind you simply have to have a proper look at all components........
Regards
Danie

Hi Juran
If that brown / grey colored stuff is indeed an epoxy, I would contact the previous owner if I were you - just to try an find out who did a back yard job like that.........

Yeah, ask him nicely, then punch him the nose! Just kidding. I do not advocate violence. Except when someone butchers a Lada. A very sad event indeed.
On the plus side Juran, I have a close friend in Germiston who is a very good Aluminum welder, although welding a casting is always tricky. I think welding it at first and ordering the part from Russia might be a way forward. I will speak to him and see how much it should cost- though it won't break the bank.
Geez, I still can't believe my eyes looking at those pics...
Peace.

Hi Juran
I have has casings on customer vehicles welded without any problems as long as the guy doing the welding knows what he is doing. If it gets welded and machined down properly I cant see a need for a new casing.

Hey guys, Thanks for all the comments, I believe the part number for this is 2121-1802232 (Hope so Danie, thank you for the comments....I believe that if I do not do what you said and check everything I will have more problems in the long run. I will look into all of this....thank you for being honest! I have taken the casing to an engineering shop in centurion and I was referred to them and were told that they are good! I am waiting for the quote but it sounds like it's going to be around R300 - R400 for the welding and machining... I am getting a price from Ventz aswell and will decide on what I am going to do...and let you guys know...

Yeah, I think so too.....A little bit more expensive but it's new!
Big up to Ventz for being so helpful!!! BIG DIFFERENCE!!!
I want to prep the car tonight quickly for the transfer case install tomorrow! Have any of you guys replaced the bolts which keep the transfer case in place? It's the four bolts which come from the floor right next to the tunnel....
I have bought new bolts (Same size and length) but do not know if I can just knock the old ones out?
Furthermore, I see two huge round rubbers (+- 10cm diameter) on either side of the transfer case. Isnt there something that needs to bolt onto that like a cross brace or something?

Hi Juran
I would centre punch the bolts in the inside and after checking the centres drill them out. Drill a piece of flat bar with 8mm holes at the correct centres and put the new bolts through and tack weld in place. insert this from the inside and weld in a few places. There are no braces of any kind to fit. only the 4 bolts we have been speaking about.

Thanks Ronnie,
I will do this! I forgot to ask....there is a bracket on either side of the tunnel underneath the seat and the one bolt is underneath that...any idea as it's going to be very dificult to get the bolt in under the bracket, especially with some plate tacked to it?
I will also send some pics of the rubbers....as there is nothing connected to it at the moment!

Hi Juran
I can`t comment on fitting the plate and bolts into place as my Lada is all carpeted and not so easy now to look at. I had one thread stripped at the top but I used a joining nut to overcome the problem. These nuts are about 25mm long so they use all the thread on the bolts. You can buy these from any GOOD electrical wholesaler. I have used them on the gearbox and transfer box.

The thread on two of these bolts stripped completely about 3 weeks ago- I really didn't have the time to strip the inside to get at the bolts, so I recut the thread on M7(1mm). This isn't ideal, as the nut is only size 11mm, but it has held for now. Soon I'll psyche myself up to pull up all the beautiful interior work I did and replace the bolts. And yes, Juran, I saw that the one bolt is hidden. That is a fight for another day though...
And I think that buying a new housing part is a wise move. Of all the parts you don't want to break in the middle of nowhere, that should rank pretty highly.

Hey guys,
I cut off the bolts with the grinder and then drilled them out from the bottom of the car to the inside (quite the mission). I have bought Hi Tensile steel bolts to replace the previous ones. Have made one long braket with flat bar on each side.
I have taken photos and will post them tomorrow when I am finished!!
Thanks for the help sofar guys!!

Hi Guys
I am ready to put back the transfer case but I need a boot part number (21213-2202068) which comes in between the transfer case and the gearbox and covers the cv. Does anyone know if there is an aftermarket boot that I can find at Midas or somewhere similar?
Also, does anyone know if the inside of the cv can also be replaced with an aftermarket one? The cv is not as it should be but I cannot see the use of the cv because there can't be that much movement between the gearbox and transfer case??
Thanks Guys
Juran

Hi Juran
As far as I know the CV is a big improvement in comparison with earlier models without CV's.
Should the Transfer Box not be 100% in line with the Gearbox, without a CV vibration problems could be worse.
I am not sure about aftermarket boots, but I think you might get some advice from other members.
Perhaps it would help if you just clean the CV inner components properly, and then repack it with a good quality CV joint grease ?

Danie

Hi Danie Thanks for the reply, I have cleaned the cv and repacked it, but one can see that someone previously worked on it! (Backyard style)!! and damaged the inner housing! It still works and I dont think that it would give much problems because it doesnt have to work as hard because there is no real swivel movement on the cv like on the propshafts for instance. But I don't want to take the chance! I am going to a cv specialist and will tell about my findings! Hold thumbs!! For all the other guys, please let me know if you know anything about the boot!! Thanks for the replies so far!!! Juran
