Today Rusti got Police Clearance - A dodgy moment when the officer decided that the 21213 number above the engine number also had to be on the Vehicle doc's. Thankfully he accepted that that only identifies the engine block as a 1700...
I ended up doing almost 160 km's today going back and forth and also had the pleasure of meeting ANOTHER lada owner.
Nic is on the lower south coast and has a 1700 sidekick that is used everyday.
A quick prep about the timing chain tensioner and redirecting to the LOCSA website should see a new member on board.
Tomorrow sees me going up to Howick - about 400km round trip. I will see what my consumption is really like

Hi Charles, Yes I am. Not loving the noisy diff and gearbox though. I will be changing the oil in the front diff to 85W-140 to stretch the life bit more and possibly go to a mongrade in the gearbox. I may put in 1 oil viscosity heavier than current.

After a quick look at the oils, I am changing my gearbox oil to an ISO 220 Gear oil. All the other components I am putting onto 85W-140. That should stop them farting in church :-)
The 80W-90 is an ISO 150 with imporved low temperature characteristics.
Justincase has low temperature concerns.... Here 12C is enough to have Ronnie shivering and switching his electric blanket on ;D;D

I have decided that the gearbox output shaft is leaking too much oil. While I was at Ventz, I purchased an output shaft seal and will replace it all this weekend.

I am not happy with the noise from the gearbox and will be taking the oil viscosity from an ISO 150 to an ISO 220. Though the oil will be "thicker" it will provide better protection at higher temperatures (long high speed runs) Changing gears at low temperatures may be slightly difficult, but I will report on this.
While I am at it, the TC is also coming out for the intermediate shaft and cv to be overhauled. The TC will also be realigned to hopefully kill some of the vibrations.

This week was a pretty good week. Rusti earned its keep and had me grinning as I drove the dunes in Richards Bay. I have done over 3000km in the last 3 weeks. That is over 3 times Ronnies annual milage Tuesday was not that great as the clutch slave cylinder seals packed in - Bugger!!!!! But is been replaced with a few spares from an Uno master cylinder kit (19.05 is the bore diameter) it is back up nd running

Well the past few weeks have flown by. I replaced the clutch on the 206 with the assistance of Ronnie - what a k@k job. Anyway it now runs. Not hours after getting the 206 running Rusti decides to start making VERY ominous noises that have been traced to the gearbox. I will know shortly what awaits. the strange thing though is that when you are in neutral the car still wants to creep forward. I am hoping that it is something basic like adjustment of the selector forks.

There is no adjustment on the forks. Maybe one of the syncro springs snapped and now the syncro doesn't move all the way back. When you strip it please measure the length of the output shaft bush for me.

May well be a simple thing like worn indent springs? Let's hope so.
Maybe the bolts on the indent cover came undone?

Good morning Guys Our Lada is NOW running as best as could be. Still some work needs to be done.
Hope I'm not Hi-jacking:
It's Winter and I need covered transport to work on a Rainy Days. Had the CO2 done last week @ Workshop.
Last night me and our Reverend went to Homevisit the Sick on Farms in Klein Drakenstein, Paarl Area.
Dominee normally drives a small A190 or Something MB car. He said: "Br Steve kan ons maar met jou motor ry?" "Dis reg Dominee, ons kan maar ry", was my answer and off we went.
After about 2KM of tar we turned onto the farm roads and into the Vineyards and Lemon Orchards. I realy took it slow. We only had minimal rain, but the roads already show the signs of deterioration. We visited Three (3) farms and the overall road condition was bad compared to the Scraped Hard Rolled Service Roads some of you maybe used to.
We had a nice enjoyable trip. Everything went fine. I think I'll definitely need to repair the interior lights and add some Auxilary Driving Lights. It's very dark and the fruit trees intensify the illusion. Our Penticostal Outreaches also start on Thursday evening - looking forward to it.
Well that's my recent experience with the Lad. The overheating / Water-loss problem is also resolved with a Cap from SR Radiators in Paarl. Behr Part #4410841 T1-7. The info on the Cap was provided by Francois in Wellington.
Regards Stephen

Hi Stephen
That is absolutely great news - very happy for you! ;D
The interior lights on the Niva is terrible to say the least but the driving lights and the rest of the external lights are actually very good.
There is a thread somewhere - but maybe Ronnie can help here - it is quite important that you fit the correct bulbs.
Thanks for the info on the radiator cap - how much did it cost?
Regards Marius

Thanks for the heads up on the cap Stephen.
It may well be that the bulb of the replacement could differ from the original?

Marius[/quote] I am glad to report that Rusti needs a new release bearing. I will collect it in the morning and put the Rusti together again.
Thank you Ronnie for your help once again in getting the gear box out.
