As I write this I am in Ghana preparing to return to SA on the weekend. Interestingly enough i have seen 3 Niva's on the road. I was not able to identify whether they were 1.6 or 1.7 models. I will collect my Lada on Monday and from there start to asess the True condition of my vehicle. What I can say is the following:- 1.7 Carb model. Very original with 1/4 windows. I have taken it for a drive before I purchased it and blew a hole in the exhaust. The Niva has 80 000 km on the clock and still looks excellent inside. After reading some of the posts I am almost afraid to peel back the carpet or look under the hood ;D
As all our other cars were named by my daughters, I am expecting the Lada to be named shortly and will report.
My intention is to have the car as a daily driver in and around Pennington (Yes the same hometown as Ronnie) with regular trips up to Richards Bay where I will Legally be allowed to drive on coastal dunes (My justification for getting the Niva)
I will shortly add an Aircon as anything else there is pure hell, If Ventz still has any I will be knocking.
I am glad I decided on a Lada Rather than a Landy as LOCSA seems MUCH friendlier than some of the L/R forums I have been on.

Hi Vincent
A warm welcome to the forum (sorry I missed your intro).
You will be in good hands in Pennington, but I must warn you Ronnie is a huge Landy fan ;D.
LOCSA is the fastest growing family in SA!

Hi Vincent I bet you are looking forward to Monday . I fully agree with you regarding an Air Con, it is a must have. I am a huge fan of Landy`s but I also found the club to be very unfriendly, and totally dominated by a hand full who had no interest in people like me. I did not even last an hour at the first event I went to, going as far as throwing away the lunch vouchers we had bought and went home. Looking forward to meeting you one of these days. Ronnie

Thanks all for the warm response. I will post a few pictures of my Niva as soon as I get it.
As I have indicated in my Intro post, I intend to use the Niva as a daily drive and will provide a realistic "Living with a Niva" view. I do about 3500 - 5500 km /month.
@ Ronnie - I will PM you later in the week as I unfortunately have a number of work related tasks to complete before I will be allowed to play.

Unfriendly clubs and forums are usually controlled by groups of yuppies, and / or Businessmen who use these clubs and Forums for their own business purposes - and to make their fat wallets even thicker.
These Fat Cats often do not like the ordinary man in the street to"steel some of their glitter" and often do not hesitate to bash, to question, or try to make fools of everyone who might "threaten" their fat wallets, and egos.

Hi Vincent I like your Linux avatar. Does that also mean you prefer open source software to MS? There are a few open source users on the forum regards spikes

@ Spikes. I am transitioning :-) I have always admired open source very much and am investigating moving our business machines and systems across to open source. Locally we have Duncan in the village who really appreciates open source and is helping us out.
@ Ronnie - The exhaust has blown a hole in it, so you should hear the Niva when it arrives in the Village :-D. That will be Monday after I get a temp permit to move the Niva.
Having driven it before I paid a deposit, it seems I may have lucked on a machanically good Gem. Brakes work :-) :-)

After a few work related delays, I finally have my Lada !!!! After looking at it, my daughters promptly named "Rusty" which I will officially name "Rustovich" THe pictures will be loaded once I have finished moving offices and Shelley from Telkom gets my ADSL up again. Having read a few of the horror stories of fellow Lada owners I can only count my blessing. I drove the vehicle 64km from Uvongo to Pennington and can say that the only items not working are: 1. Driver side interior light. 2. Hooter 3 . Wipers (well they do move ....) 4. Exhaust now has a great big hole in it.
ALL guages, dash lights, HELL even the BRAKES work well. I was expecting to call the car SKVEEKI but with only 80546km on the car, it is practically new. No rattles etc.
As you can expect after this euphoric drive (Getting to 110km is like asking Scotty for moor poowur) I was bouncing around to take my daughters for a drive in Rusty.
The first Kilometer was as to be expected, when, without warning the car started to lose power (Blocked filter was my first thought). 7pm on a pennington suburban road is a dark place to be stranded. It turns out I need to replace all the diapragms in the carb. They hold as much petrol as a JZ election promise. This means my car will NOT run without the 2nd barrel opening.
I roared home in 2nd gear @ 5000 rpm. In true Lada fashion, it may have broken down, but did not leave me stranded.
This morning I was informed by my youngest daughter that she will NEVER ride in Rusty again.
I now need to get hold of Ventz to see if he has a Carb kit for sale.
Ronnie, I will PM you to get your phone number

Hi Vincent It was a pleasure to meet you, even if it was only for 2 minutes. We will get some time together tomorrow. The truck on the stand across from you had been stuck in the sand for 2 hours and was down to it`s axle. The niva pulled it out with no problem on to the drive way and up the hill Ronnie

Thank you all for the messages.
Since my last post, Telkom has finally got the ADSL up and running. I have replaced the accelerator diaphragm - One seriously modified toyota diaphragm. The hole in the exhaust has been patched. The mechanical fuel pump which was leaking has been bypassed and it now only runs on the electric pump. The missing driver side mirror will shortly be replaced (THANK YOU RONNIE for the replacement)
As to be expected, there is still LOADS of work to be done.
Other items to report. My youngest daughter who would NOT set foot in the Lada again is a convert. I find myself running them around the village as they Love being in the car.
Marius >> Ronnie does not tell you the whole story - the truck was loaded with tree branches AND had to be pulled UP the hill :-) Vodka - I think not. It has to be Pure Mampoer <grin>
