Hi Ronnie & Mike The fan is fine in that it does not drag and switches on at low speed or high speed and does not get abnormally hot. You may recall the alternator was dowsed in antifreeze shortly after I bought the NIVA and corroded badly. Mostly likely permanent damage was also caused. I'll check its output with a sensitive meter over the weekend Regards Spikes

Hi All
As indicated when I joined the forum, my indicators would only work for a few flashes indicating left, then just stop flashing after 4 flashes. They would work normally indicating right.
Now after getting the Lada on the road after a 2 month lay-up with brake problems (sorted...more or less) the indicators now flash when indicating left and right but only flash normally for about 4 flashes, then they start flashing faster, as though a globe has gone, but all the globes are in working condition. Any advice??

I have to immediately indicate that I am not an electric/electronic expert but from time to time I get a similar experience. This normally happens to me when I use the brakes.
What I found is that a lot of dust settles on the green "PC" board of the rear lights and you end up with dirty contacts.
A quick fix for me is to spray some Electoclean onto the area and refit all the bulbs properly.
What I also find from time to time is that the bulbs tend to come loose in the bayonet fitting. Just refit them.

It could also be that the relay itself could have a weakend bimetal strip that does not change over at a constant rate. As it gets hotter the flasher runs faster.

The local autolec told me today that a aftermarket unit is not avalible. He says I should get a isuzu or toyota one. They are cheap and will work fine. Will open mine over the weekend. It makes a terrible noise so I think it is just corroded. Will see if I can fix it otherwise will get a 2nd hand one off a isuzu or toyota from the local scrap yard.

The most likely cause is the contacts on the door switch. Remove the switch and short the wire to earth. If it still does not work it is a break between the light and the switch, or less likely the light itself.

Good Evening Calla. When I got CERATOTH neither of the interior lights worked 'off the door switch'.. I took them both apart, gave them a jolly good clean and really cleaned up the earth contact on the pillar. Since then they have worked OK with just the monthly 'squirt' with WD40 keeping them lubricated. Hope this helps, regards. Keith and CERATOTH.

I agree with the above. Those door switches are really poor. A good cleaning has worked for me, but after a few months of dust they become intermittent. Also cleaning out the lights themselves and bending the contacts so you get a nice connection is worth the trouble.
Incidentally, it's the same switch that is used for the parking brake, and no matter how many times I clean it up and even rewire the earth, all the road dust gets in within a few days and the warning light stops working (I've managed to drive 100kms with the brake on more than once... not very comforting!)
If you manage to find a replacement switch that works, please post the info, I'd love to change those switches!

Marius I have to agree Marius I have seen logging trucks in the middle of the Jungles of Ghana with brighter tail lights than the Lada interior light For the record logging trucks generally do not even bother with things like lights and indicators. spikes - You would have a HSE melt down there. @vincent, I can believe that, feedback in the SA Forestry Institute circles are that most Forestry practices in Central Africa are non sustainable and working condition's not even on 3rd world scale

Im just going to buy a pair of led light screw them to the pillar and run the earth and power to the door switch wire and forget about the 3rd wire just have them working off the doors only

Just wondering, is there not a very small CV-boot-like-nipple that one can put over the door light switch to keep the dust out? Or maybe have a rubber tube on the door side so that when you close the door it will seal over the switch.

The main problem is the back of the switch where the contacts are open to the air. They simply oxidize and loose contact. If the switch is clean it should still last a long time. The same switch has been used on millions of cars over the years.

Ronnie, would a big blob of silicone over the back of the switch then not work or a semi-seal like with the semi-seal head lights? Even if it just make the lifespan of the contact points longer.
I think mine is also busted so I will have to do something soon as well.

You could not use silicone, as it will stop the switch operating. Unscrew one of the switches and take it to the local spares shop and you should get a similar one. If it is not exactly the same, use the one from the hand brake as it is identical. The ones I bought were the same, and very cheap.
