New bearings are on there way from Mother Russia I had a gear box on the shelf with 40 000 k on it. Didn't know if it was any good because it came out of a no runner. Luckelly i had to replace the bell housing (diesel) and i discovered that the thrust ring between bell housing and first bearing was broken. I replaced it and put the box on the niva. It works well and is silent, so i guess i'm lucky.

Hi Jan As a matter of interest , did you see any wear on the broken Thrust Ring - like the wear (shiny part) of the ring at the left of this pic ? : Regards Danie

Hi Danie Difficult to see from your photo but according to Gabor (Jan's faithfull supplier from Hungary! you should not worry too much if the ring is shiny. Obviously if it's warn down you should replace it. Marius

Hi Marius I am not worried about the fact that the thrust ring is shiny - what happens is that the Thrust Rings get worn by the slipping outer bearing Rings. The shiny part of the ring is just visual evidence that the ring is worn. The Thrust Rings gets thinner by time - therefore it loses it's strength to the point when it simply breaks. I am prepared to bet my front teeth that should Jan compared the thickness of his broken (shiny) Thrust Ring with the thickness of a brand new Thrust Ring , he will find that the new ring is thicker than the broken (shiny) one. And apart from that, the chance is at least 100% that he will find that the outer bearing ring which presses against the Thrust Ring, is slipping inside the Gearbox Housing as well........I am prepared to bet the rest of my teeth on that as well . ;D As far as I know Gabor sells Lada spare parts. - nothing against him, but the problem with Part Distributors ( in general) is that they are Salesmen, making money, and almost never bother to inform their customers how to take precautions in order to prevent Spare Part failures. As far as I am concerned - it is quite easy to stop the particular bearing outer Ring from slipping - it will definately save a lot of Thrust Ring failures out there, and keep more Lada owners mobile . Regards Danie

But indeed the outer ring of the first bearing is spinning. it's just a matter of time, i guess...I just have to sit this one out and wait for the new bearings. BTW: Gabor dous indeed inform his buyers. My very first ever gear box overhaull was completely assisted by him over mail.

Hi Jan
I guess you have ordered a new Thrust Ring - it might be worthwhile to compare the top and bottom edges, and thickness of the new ring with the edges and thickness of the broken one.
As you know, the Thrust Ring is cone shaped, and the edges are suppose to be quite sharp.
Maybe the friction caused by the slipping outer bearing ring is generating too much heat on the very thin Thrust Ring itself - and the heat might weaken the Ring - who knows ?
Nice of Gabor to assist his cusomers during overhauls , but I stick to my point - Spare Part Suppliers who do explain to their customers why components tend do fail (i.e. thrust rings) are very, very rare...

This is what I did today. Pulled the gearbox on a Murano. To get the box out you also have to remove the tc and engine. The Murano is a 3.5 v6 transferse mounted 4x4 with CVT gearbox. Charles Attachments:
