Marius how many km does your Niva have on? Must be nice to know that you have been the only owner.

Close on 97 000kms. It is quit nice to be a first hand owner but being part of LOCSA has helped a great deal to keep our Niva going smoothly. The tips and support has been amazing!

I found the that the new bushes are of a much harder/firmer compound than the old ones. Hopefully they will give me even better service. Still have a bit of suspension noise - probably on the lower wishbone?

Marius I also hae a terrible noise on my suspention. Driving her to work tomorrow so I can pick her up on the lift and have a check over. I think I may need silent block bushes.

Charles I think I have the same problem I had some years ago on the right hand side. What you can try first is to get a small amount of red rubber grease into the silent block area and re-tighten.
The noise I got got from the idler arm was also quite significant considering the small amount of play.

The small body places wheel/suspension components close to occupants and the body works as a wonderful boom box

Hey, I'm happy running Ubuntu 11.10 as I write

The noise is terrible on corrucated roads. Drove 30km on a dirt road this weekend. It handles the corrugations beautifully. The noise is just starting to bother me. It is a metal to metal sound but a fairly light sound.
Spikes I tried to get into the hang of ubuntu but no luck. I do not have enough time to get to grips with it.

I have to use Ubuntu on a regular basis just to get my network up and running as Windows seems to struggle. My Windows is getting more and more troublesome even with all the updates?!

Ubuntu 11.10 seems well sorted. Best bootstrap so far. Can now boot into any of the 4 OS systems on the PC Marius, I'll email you pdf book on sorting out Win systems. Its only 28p but really worthwhile

I had a look at my TC and intermediate shaft yesterday.
The bearing at the back of the TC still seems fairly smooth (for now). I had a look at the high/low shaft area where some oil is leaking. The oil leak is not anything major and I discovered the reason why it seems to get worse. The boot is quite sturdy and has some reserve and actually begins to act as a reservoir until the the oil overflows from the bottom edge of the boot.
On the last oil change I overfilled slightly to 800ml. When I drained the oil yesterday I ended up with just under 800ml.
The rubbers on the back of the output shaft are still in perfect shape (compared to my spares). I just added a small amount of grease to the Intermediate shaft.

Charles (or anyone else) perhaps you can help me with a recent issue? Recently when I travel in the wet my brakes seems to get noisy - almost as if metal on metal. The front pads and disks are still very good and the last time I checked the rear (recently) things looked fine.
This is only in wet conditions - whilst driving. In dry conditions everything is back to normal again.
Marius
PS - did you sort the suspension?

Hi Marius
That sound like a brake groan to me. Large are of slippage. It is fairly normal for wet brakes. You can remove the pads and check that the cleaning groove on the pad is clean. They like to clog up with mud and brake dust and then you get a noise.
With regards to my suspention. I did find the noise. It is the caliper that is ratteling. So at least I know it is not serious. I will sort it out in due course, but first its time to do the interior.

No time for the interior this weekend. Hopefully next week. Darryn the templates will help alot. Also the fact that I finally got the center console cover. Now I do not have to try and cover the tunnel with carpet again.

He wants a cv joint one. In my opinion a universal joint one is stronger. If a cv one was better all new cars would come out with it and not uni ones.

Charles the only thing I am a little worried about is the rear boot on the CV might pick up some damage. However I think it would probably be fine under normal conditions. It is not the kind of prop shaft I would use in heavy duty off road conditions though.
The CV itself is the same as the one on the intermediate shaft. They apparently experimented with other CV's (including a Golf one) and found the Russian one far superior.
I will probably try and fit some protection for the rear boot. The CV's should be "softer" on the rear bearing and oil seal of the TC - but only time will tell.

I am hoping that it would eliminate any remaining vibration on the drive line. It would be interesting to see/feel the effect - if any at all - as they all claim that it does make a significant difference. I will let you guys know. Marius

Charles the Ferodo pads don't have any groove on the pad - just like the originals. Apparently you can use a hacksaw to improvise a groove diagonally across the pad. I just washed the pads and cleaned the calipers. I'll be doing a long stint over the weekend which should give me a chance to see if I still pick up a whine.

Does anyone know if I can find mirrors that are a close match to the ones at the top. These mirrors were used in the early Niva "M" mod. Marius Attachments:

Ronnie had Toyota Hilux/Land Cruiser mirrors on. The parts catalogues list them as Toyota 4x4. Marius those ones looks alot like the universal ones you can get a a spares shop. I will go look tomorrow and see if I can find a part number.

Thanks Charles I'll appreciate that. I am looking for a mirror that needs no drilling to fit and if it looks like the one on top it would be a bonus.
