Hi Folks
Right or wrong , today I decided to phone the Autozone Head Office regarding the Saleri waterpumps. Please do not get me wrong:
I did not have any intention of "taking over" Marius's negotiations regarding the Saleri waterpumps ! I just thought that should an "outsider" do make an enquiry regarding the waterpumps, it could just give them a "hupstoot" in making a final decision.
Well, in short, I've got good news, and even better news !
Firstly, the Head Office official confirmed that they did get Marius's e.mail, and that an order has already been placed for another shipment of Saleri (Lada) waterpumps.
But wait - now for the real good news:
After some discussion, the Autozone Official offered to start importing "fast moving components" - like "pistons, rings etc." for our little beasts in future !
The only conditions are :
1. That a list of fast moving components must be submitted to the Autozone Head Office.
2. That we must "promote" the fact that these components will be available at Autozone at this website.
3. That we as owners will commit ourselves to buy these components from Autozone as far as possible.
Guys, I am more than convinced that this issue could have a major (positive) influence in rescuing quite a number of Ladas out there ! It is no secret that Lada spare parts are heavily overpriced in South Africa ! In fact - I believe that should Autozone become one of the Suppliers (fast moving items) in future, Ladas will finally obtain it's rightful place in this country, and will become a lot more popular !
I think this issue should be considered and discussed in detail first.

;D ;D ;D Thank you, thank you, thank you DANIE!!!! ;D ;D ;D That's great news! You've made, my day! I'm so excited about this! Now, when can we expect the first shipment? I'm gonna be needing pistons, rings, bearings, the new mirrors lol, oil pumps, tyre rod ends... Jeez, Danie, this is great news. I would think that we need to compile a wish list here on the site. Regards Fangsingh

Hi Danie No need to apologise for anything - nothing wrong with a bit of a "hupstoot"! I think this is another huge step in the right direction for our beloved Niva - fantastic! Marius

I guess if we were to make up a list of fast moving parts - I would like to add the master brake cylinder and both the master and slave clutch cylinder.

I’m also excited about this, Fansingh, so I can only imagine how you must feel after what you must have ‘coughed up’ recently on your spares! ;D ;D Danie – as Marius says this is fantastic and there is no need to apologize. It was inevitable that something like this could happen eventually as the issue of overpriced spares locally has been raised on numerous occasions so the ‘writing has been on the wall’ for some time. Unfortunately, our complaints have consistently fallen upon deaf ears. Well done!!!! NIKKI

Good news indeed, Danie! Did Autozone put a volume and time-frame the "fast moving" spares? A point of reference will help in defining a list.

Hi All
Fangsingh, unfortunately I think it might take some time before the first shipment will arrive. To make spare part prices much cheaper, I think it is crucial that :
1. Autozone do order spareparts directly from a reliable supplier in Russia, in order to avoid any "middleman" elsewhere in Europe.
2. Autozone do order spare parts via sea freight, in order to avoid high air freight costs.
I have already compiled a long list of fast moving components, and this is only the first few components on my list:
1. All fast moving Gearbox gears, gearbox bearings, selector forks, and oil seals.
2. All fast moving Engine parts - Gasket sets, Inlet and outlet Valves, Valve stem guides + seals, oversize Pistons + rings, crankshaft Bearings (standard + undersize), oil pumps, loose starter solenoids + complete starters, radiator caps, etc.
3. Other fast moving items , like all brake cylinders + loose kits, ball joints, all diff bearings, oil seals, as well as crownwheel and pinion gears, universal joints, retaining collars (for rear wheel bearings, and oil seals for the Transfer box.
There are obviously more components which are important as well.

Hi all The price on the water pump suggests that their prices on other items will be very competitive - lets hope so Some other urgent parts that we should have on the list is the timing chain, tensioner shoe AND bolt, and also the tensioner. It would be absolutely amazing if we can get all of these parts through Autozone! Marius

Hi Danie
One thing I would buy if the price was right is a new indicator switch. I think other members have mentioned their indicators do not self cancel. I have never priced them so I have no idea of the cost.

Hi Marius
The list of fast moving parts is almost complete.
I am not too sure about gearbox components though . Apart from the 5th gear , the gear which drives the 5 th gear, bearings, and the fork selectors - do you know about any other fast moving parts inside the gearbox ?
I am just worried that this list might become too long - I do not want to scare Autozone off for ever.

This is indeed good news.
A part that is also needed is starter bendix, radiater caps, heater valves, distributor modules and also Solex carb kits.
Also front drive shaft cv's and boots and transfer doughnut.
What is the change of R/H steering boxes and propshaft u/j's
Regards.

Hi Danie
I believe much of the 5th gear issues are resolved with fitting the correct lock washer.
If the 5th gear jumps a number of parts could be damaged in the process. This includes the 5th gear, syncro ring and the syncro hub. The 5th gear unit is normally not damaged unless a bearing or the bolt breaks.
Selector forks could be a possibility and a very handy thing would be the needle bearing as it is only available from the local dealers.

Hi Marius
I do know that the needle bearings are not available locally and - but what about the other gearbox bearings ?
I know that the other bearings are listed as "SKF compatible" elsewhere, but I do not know whether anyone has ever done an inquiry about the SKF bearings, to find out whether it is still available.
As mentioned, I do not want to list any component which might be available at Bearing Man, or any other distributor.
Thanks.

Danie as far as I know the needle bearing is the only bearing not available from Bearing Man or SKF.
We should also be looking at oil seals as some of the local ones are not quite as good as the Russian ones.

Danie, Auto-zone also sells engines, do you think it would be possible for them to get us sub-assemblies?

Hi Marius / Fangsingh
Marius, the Transfer Box and Gearbox seals are different from the local seals so I have listed them already. No compatible seals for the diffs are available, so I have listed them as well.
Fangsingh, there is a huge market for the engines which are available at Autozone, and I don't think they will consider sub assemblies for Ladas. I think specially at the beginning, they will "test" the Lada market (importing components in smaller quantities), before they do "go bigger".

Just some feedback regarding the possibility of getting more spare parts from Autozone in future:
A list of fast moving components has been submitted to the Autozone Head Office, and we should get a response from them as soon as they have made a final decision in this regard.

Fangsing I think the rear one is available as aftermarket and the front one might be as well. Our local Lada spares suppliers do stock them both.
