Hi Marius It depends exactly where the dip stick stops. There is more than one position in there. If Spikes has oil up to the level of the breather and Mine is up to the level of the breather the oil level is the same. Therefore you must be just as happy with mine. . This is the correct level for all Niva boxes and from your measurements yours was the same with the oil in. I have even gone to the bother of taking photos so there can be no question of the correct amount of oil in the box even with the top off. I would suggest you throw the "dipstick" away, it is of little use as there are too many variables as too the position where you measure. I use a small torch to see if oil is present. In fact once the oil is down to the level of the breather, and as long as there are no leaks the level is fine. Spikes has just proven that. Ronnie

Hi Ronnie and Marius, I used a plastic tie wrap for a dipstick. 1 time I pushed it directly into filler hole to stop against metal. It came out dry. Second test I angled it downwards. There was slight resistance then it went further. This time when I checked it had (at a guess between 2 and 3 cm) oil on it. I did not measure the actual length of the oil smear nor the actual length of wrap into the box. I then used a small mirror and torch to see inside. The level is at about the same level as the adjusting nut hole. Which makes me happy. Another 10000km done the line, I'll fill it with oil and take it from there. regards Spikes PS I know I should have taken more accurate measurements but I had scraped skin off the back of my hand and it was hurting like hell S

Hi Ronnie/Spikes
This conversation is not going anywhere so I am going to conclude with the following:
>> 180ml of normal GL-5 gear oil is the recommended and specified lubricant for the steering box.
>> The same amount of Lithium based grease can be used as a useful and viable substitute for the oil in the box IF the box is leaking oil.
>> It is recommended that you try to cure the oil leak first, before you use grease as a substitute.

Good Evening Guys. Just to let you know that the second set of temperature readings for the steering box came out about the same as on the first posting. I guess that the real test will be in the summer when things warm up a little. I'm dropping big hints with Li that I really would like one of those infrared temperature probes for my birthday in November. They are 'only' around the ZAR 750 mark at our local Mica hardware store so I should be lucky. If so 'watch this space' in December. Regards to all.
