well that all sounds like some great fun. just remember the bearings will take a bit of torture on those rims of yours, best try fit them on the original 16" rims. Your lada still would need a good service some time and a full check up before road worthy. have fun in the sand.

Hi Charles
I noticed that there might be some copyright issues regarding the VW photo, so I have deleted that post.
Sorry about that ! I am just a bit worried about websites which register copyright on their photos - one never knows whether it might be a money making scheme or not...
Do you have more info about the VW mod ?

My Niva will most likely end up like this someday. Solid front axel and a bullitproof drivetrain. Most likely toyota components. I love the look of this Niva. Charles Attachments:

Hi Charles
Like most of these conversions I see it seems to consist of nothing but pipes and wires going from one side to the other. How can any vehicle like that be classed as reliable? It can`t!. I am not against doing the conversion but most of them look as if they have been thrown together.

Hi Ronnie A mod like that serves only as an extreme off-road vehicle. Some might not agree - but it's not a Lada anymore - it is just another "extreme off-road vehicle" that gets fixed between events. Fantastic paint job on this post Charles! wore.ca/smf/index.php?topic=4407.0Regards Marius

While Ari has mentioned emergency triangular warning sign elsewhere - please take not that the cops started issuing fines at roadblocks when these items cant be showed .

Hi all Reading Danie's note re Triangles, this is what the RT Act stipulates; "National Road Traffic Act, 1996 National Road Traffic Regulations, 1999 Chapter VI : Fitness of Vehicles Part II : Equipment on or in respect of vehicles 214. Emergency warning signs (Triangle) 1) For the purposes of this regulation – a) the expression "motor vehicle" excludes an ambulance, motor-car, motor cycle, motor tricycle or motor quadrucycle; and b) "reflective material" means reflective material which under all circumstances is capable of reflecting light. 2) No person shall operate on a public road – a) a motor vehicle unless there is carried on such vehicle at least one emergency warning sign, which – i) is a double-sided sign having the shape, design, minimum dimensions and colours as illustrated hereunder, and of which the red portion on each side – (aa) shall consist of red reflective material; or (bb) shall be painted red and have retro-reflectors at each corner; or ii) is an emergency warning sign contemplated in paragraph (b); b) a motor vehicle with a gross vehicle mass exceeding 3 500 kilograms, unless there is carried on such vehicle at least one emergency warning sign, which – i) is a warning sign complying with the requirements of standard specifications SABS 1329 "Retro-Reflective and Fluorescent Warning Signs For Road Vehicles", Part 1: "Triangles"; and ii) bears a certification mark: [/b] Provided that in the case of a combination of motor vehicles, the emergency warning sign for every motor vehicle of such combination may be carried on the drawing vehicle: Provided further that in the case of a combination of three motor vehicles, at least two emergency warning signs shall be carried on the vehicle." Bold and Italics mine. If you purchase a local product this refers to the SANS specification. EU markings are included in the SANS spec.I'm not sure about the Japanese or Chinese specs inclusion into the SANS regards all Spikes PS If you want to check out Acts goto www.acts.co.za

Hi Marius Your post reminds me of something I have been meaning to ask. With all these major mods when does a Niva cease to be a Niva? Ronnie

Yes Ronnie - I rather tell a story then struggle with my foot in a bucket ;D
It also helps a bit if someone chooses not to download all "700" pics just to be able to read a thread.

Hi Guys
Am I correct in saying that in the Niva the seats cant go very far back?
Something Ari and myself was talking about the other day, do you carry a pocket knife? If so what is it? We both love our knives, maybe a bit too much, and I was wondering if some of you guys feel the same?

Regarding Photobucket pics - this website gets visited by many visitors who are not members. They do not log in and therefore can't view bigger images of the smaller pics which gets posted to this forum.
I believe some visitors might like to have a look at bigger images of the smaller pics, and might be considering joining as members.
For this reason I prefer to post bigger Photobucket pics to this forum, and will continue to do so.

Hi Danie I don't visit the bucket all too often ;D but if I remember correctly the pic they display is more or less a thumbnail depending on the size of the actual pic - say for example 68%. If you download the pic as a visitor it will be the full sized picture and not the one displayed at say 68%. I think Anyways don't worry about the way these photos are posted - just as long as we can - that is what matters Regards Marius

Hi Charles My aftermarket seats just go back far enough for me and I am small. I would like a pair of originals if ever I can . As far as a knife goes I only carry one when in the bush. Ronnie

Hi All I mentioned yesterday I would post what I have done so any parts which are not standard can be identified by anyone. Unfortunately due to the reflection from the labels (they are stainless steel) I could only get a photo of one of them. Ronnie

Hi guys
I always carry either a knife or a multi-tool in the car.
The Niva is not very comfy as it is - esp for the larger type of person. Fortunately I am not one of those.
I find the original seats comfy enough and they do move quite some distance in the rails. A seat cover is very useful to protect the material.

I'm 6ft4 and I had to add 50mm on the bottom rails (by just welding some 40x40x3 angle iron) and drilling to suit. I still struggle to get my feet out the door if I swivel my whole body. If I do the manly "left foot in first" (which causes knee problems for big guys later in life) then it's not to awkward. But that's not enough to put me off. And big guys complain about the proximity of the pedals to each other- just wear narrower shoes!
I just about always have a multi-tool on me. Two in the Lada.

Hi all Leatherman Charge since 2004, before that a Gerber multitool. Everyday except when we go the JHB or Pta then the Spyderco goes along (see attachment) regards Spikes

Hi guys
Spikes - we think alike though I don't carry such expensive wear - it might get stolen ;D ;D ;D
Darryn I am not a tall guy and every now and then I hit my knee against the body on exit (probably also not good for the knee) - painful enough to remind me not to do it the next time ;D
