Hi Ronnie,
Thank you! Glad to be here!
I love the convertible in my coastal town! I thought it was a custom job but later found the original owner importer as he claims, by the person who was working on the car on the time. And then showed me photos of the day they arrived in SA from Russia. Imported a blue and a Red one..
An original Lada Niva Convertible form Russia... Don't know if its true but love the story anyway!
Deanno!

Welcome Deanno! Would be nice if you have a real Savanne. You can check here: locsa.proboards.com/thread/1522/ladanivabelgiums-sons-niva-savanne to compare to your model. Jan will probably give us the model designation on their Savanne to compare to yours It would be a pity to stick a non NIVA engine in one of two in RSA Regards Spikes

i'm sorry to say this, but this is not a Savanne. Savannes where made by the German and Dutch importer in the early 80's. Later next week i will investigate it and let you know what kind of niva it is.

Hi Spikes
I would not feel guilty, there are always perks of some kind or another no matter what job you do.

A non-Lada related question...
An old Jumbo Golf has been making a tapping sound at start up but it goes away as soon as the engine runs for bit - esp when you pick up the revs. I suppose whatever it is it gets lubricated. The car runs very well and the noise has been there for many years. I also know the mac that has worked on this car for all these years and he says it is fairly normal for these cars. Any comments as to what is causing this noise etc. etc - and perhaps what can be done about it?

Hi marius, I'm not familiar with the golf engine but if it has hydraulic lifters that could be the noise. The noise will stop as the oil pressure builds up. conrad

If it is the hydraulic lifters try using a thinner oil, my palio does that on 20W50 but when I use the specified oil of 5W30 it goes away.

Thanks guys I think you've nailed it! Next service I will use the same stuff that I use in the Lada 15W40 (Mineral) and I am sure it will make the difference. Marius

Was in pretoria Charles, not sure of the oils they used there, but when they service the palio it also had that rattle on startup, till the engine warmed up. Ari

Hi Fanus,
I know exactly how you feel, and as we were frequent visitors to the game reserves of Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe, we got to talk to plenty of people in our travels. Both Namibia, and Botswana appear to be run reasonably well with not to much crime. I remember calling in at one of the picnic sites in Zim`s main game reserve and the game ranger in charge of it had not seen another person for three weeks. This included the ranger who should have brought him his food supplies. fortunately, we had bread in the freezer and tins we could give him. I trust SA never gets this low. I remember when Zim was a prosperous country in fact I would have had no problem living there. I remember the time when SA was very cheap to live in but when we left I was fed up seeing food etc rising every month. where the government gets its inflation figures from I do not know. We were lucky being able to return to the UK for our retirement, others are not so lucky and have nowhere else to go. Best wishes to all at LOCSA

I say chaps, look what I've found on ebay! Being as old as the hills, I like mascots for bonnets and this looks really splendid, I think. Its made of good quality plastic and has a sticky pad for fixing. What do you think? Not much excitement from the hardened off roaders I guess. Pip, pip Paulg
