Hi Darryn If you are going to do more trips a fridge is essential. I will have a fridge and a freezer. It is not overkill, as it is the only way to have meat in the bush. That is why I run with so many batteries and 2 alternators. I am a great believer in being comfortable . Ronnie

Hi Darryn.
So that you do not make an expensive mistake with a fridge/freezer, take your time and if you cannot afford a good one now wait until you can. For me it must be powered by a Danfos compressor or I will not buy it. They are not cheap but will last a lifetime. 2 batteries are also essential with a split charge system.

Hi All
I am sure a lot of you read SA 4x4 mag. The November issue has an article on Khaudum Game reserve in Namibia. It is accessed in the North from the Caprive Strip. Have a read and let me know if you would like to visit there during our 2012 trip. It is a very wild reserve and one which I could return to time after time. I am a bit concerned about Zimbabwe at the moment as they must have elections in the not to distant future. I would hate to be unfortunate and be there then. Zambia for me is out as I do not want to pay close to R1000 to cross the border. Let me know.

Hi Ronnie
Makes sense. So it is Namibia and Botswana then OR Mozambique, but no crossing in between.
What you suggest is fine by me.

Hi All
I was looking for the latest list of members who have indicated they are going on this trip and can`t find it. I wanted to see if Ventz was on it, or if he is not would he join us. Perhaps this would be a good time to update the list as there are lots of new members. The trip will be around June 2012 the final dates or month will be to suit the majority and will be +- 17 days (2 full weeks). Please let us know if you want your name on the list.
Ronnie
PS I realize this is probably not a good time for the likes of Ventz who has a company to run. You are welcome to indicate the times that suit as we wish as many members as possible to attend.

Hi Ari To get to Namibia the easiest way is via Botswana. The cheap way through Botswana is through the salt pans and on to Kasane. An organized day trip into Zimbabwe to see the falls is a must, as I am sure there are plenty members who have never seen them. From there into Namibia and perhaps into Khaudum for 3 days then if there is enough time exit south and return to SA via the Northern Cape. The best time to work out some routes is during the Christmas holidays when the Forum is quiet. Remember this is an events function I am only doing it as I have been there before. Once you are happy with a route I will pass it on to you and Darryn to organize. ;D Ronnie

Thanks a lot for your effort in this regard, your experience is invaluble as most of us have never been there and do not know the ins and outs of a trip like this.

Hi Danie
You must make sure you do not tell Ventz that the Elephants in Khaudum are like terrorists. If he finds out we will all need to protect him.(if he decides to go)

Hi All Count me in for a planned trip. My idea is to have a "shorter". Then with the lessons learnt from that to plan a bigger tour. With the lessons learnt we will know the ability of the vechiles, what spare parts to carry with, camping gear etc. Alos due to time & money constraints the "shorter" tour will help guys to decide for a bigger tour as they will then know what they are letting them in for. Somet times people have strange expectations - after a short tour they will know if it will live up to their expectations.
I do not want to cover a route that can be covered by a normal 4x2 - I dont want to 4x4 all the time but would like to use the lada for what it was designed for -Work!. No challenge for me if one can do the whole trip with a 4x2.

Hi Pieter
I have added your name to the list.
Your idea of a planned shorter trip makes a lot of sense. To my mind Lesotho and Mozambique are very good options, and should be affordable as well.
Please let us know if you are planning anything.

Hi Pieter
Nice to hear from you. The final route has still not been decided yet but some more options will be given during this quiet time on the forum. As we will be venturing into the neighboring countries the duration will be 2 weeks IE 16 days. This may sound a long time but the distances are very far and members living at the coast etc have an extra 2 days traveling to do. Half way through the Caprive in Namibia is 2000km from Jhb, and even border crossings with 8 vehicles can take hours. The driving will be mixed tar and then mostly heavy sand or mud if there has been unseasonal rain. The planed time will be May / June 2012 so there is plenty time. I want to at some point visit Vic Falls as a lot of members have never been there. The Committee members responsible for the organizing of the trip will be Darryn and Ari. I am only doing the route as I have spent many years roaming the game reserves of Botswana Zimbabwe and Namibia.

Hi all I think a trip to Lesotho and surrounds during winter would be a great idea. The Niva is designed for a trip just like that. We could even go visit my roots in Rhodes and go ski at Tiffandale! A trip like that would perhaps suite more of our members Regards Marius

Hi all I just dicovered that I have only read the 1st and last page and has missed a lot of the communication! I am slowly busy finding my way on the website! I am very fortunate to week on a 4 week rotational basis - 4 weeks on & then 4 weeks of. Two weeks will suit me perfect but will also be able to fit 3 if needed - but preferably 2. My Lada is a 2003 Nivia and stock standard.
From past experiences can you advise if any modifications / improvements is needed for a trip like this?. Best regards to all. PS I stay in Secunda - all who stays in reachable area let us make a plan for a come together some time or plan a Lada breakfast run to some close destination.
In Nigeria at the moment & will be back in SA on about 5 Jan. My email is brummpwa@yahoo.com and my skype name is pieter.brummer1
Cheers all

Hi Pieter Nice to know you will be joining us . As far as the Niva is concerned make sure it has been serviced and is ready for a trip in very hot dusty conditions. In my experience you require either Jerry cans with a minimum of 40 liters or a long range tank. You also must carry a minimum of 20 liters of drinking water. You then have all your camping equipment, tent etc. The other problem is keeping your meat etc cold or frozen and if this is a one off trip it is not worth while doing anything except a good quality cooler box. The alternative is a 12volt freezer and a dual battery system which will set you back at least R8000. The other thing to watch is weight as the Niva will sag at the back very quickly. Extra Petrol and water can be loaded only when needed before going off road so your standard springs and shocks will do. Hope this helps you . Ronnie Ronnie

Hi all Just to let you know I am still on the sideline and following here from Nigeria. Will a winch be a good idea for the trip or will it only be a nice to have?
