Hi Marius and Hercules
At least the SA passport is cheap. I also travel on one. Our UK passports are due for renewal next year and I think they are about R1000 each. The good thing about them is we have unrestricted travel in the EU.
Ronnie
PS Ari I had alreadt noticed I had posted it in the wrong thread and moved it ;D

Hi All
CROSS BORDER COSTS AT CURRENT CHARGES.
Botswana
Total cost R131
Namibia
Total cost R200
Zambia
Total cost R803
Please note the costs for Zambia are via the ferry at Kazungula and the cost for the ferry of US$20 is included. Also remember both Namibia and Zambia are accessed via Botswana so you must add the Botswana costs to both. These costs are accurate. When I know the Zim costs are accurate I will give you them as well

Hi Marius I have had a quick look at the Moz border crossings and they will help me Thanks. Yes Zambia is expensive we went over the ferry in Ari`s lada and at that time we still traveled on a British passport. The visa was an obscene amount of US$ so we drove back to the ferry and drove off on the Botswana side without paying the return ferry cost of US$20. . I was going so fast they would never have caught me ;D ;D. If they still have it on record it is Ari who will be arrested . Ronnie

Hi Ronnie Thanks for a great job regarding the route, etc. I recently started thinking about the possibility of inviting members of the International Lada community to join the trip during 2012. I know this might sound completely crazy - but why not I am sure most of them will enjoy the African bush and wildlife.......... It might not be possible for interested Lada owners from abroad to join this trip with Ladas - but I am aware of at least one local hiring Company who have 4 x 4's (other brands) available ........if interested owners from abroad are prepared to share vehicles, they could find this trip very affordable. Perhaps the new Management Structure should discuss this issue........... Regards Danie

Hi Hercules
To my mind the International Lada (Niva) community can be regarded as a close knit "family" - perhaps the time has arrived to try and get everyone together.........right here in Africa !

Nice to see those old pics again - I am sure we will be able to put a very interesting trip report together during 2012.........
By the way, I noticed that more members took part in the Poll regarding the 2012 trip - hopefully we will be able to add their names to the list.........
Regards

Hi Ari
I have not seen that stopover in my travels, but I don`t use the route via Francis town very often as there are more interesting route`s to use.Sometimes came home that way as it is the fastest.

Hi Guys
Just teasing my old friend, she is small so there would probaly be space but think of all the extra stuff we would need to take with. The lada is small and I'm not even sure if I can fit all my stuff in yet.

Yes I know. Will have to rough it. I just have to make a plan for a hot shower. She isn't fond of the idea of taking a cold one. I'm sure if one is organised and remove the rear seats there will be enough room. You are lucky, you have the roof rack and space under your bonnet for your tools, and a extra tank so you dont need jerry cans. When I get mine I will still have to build all of that. I have a good design for a wheel carrier. Unless your one is better. Still waiting for photos. A second fuel tank also isnt a problem. If I cant find one at a scrap yard I will just have one made up, with baffels inside, at the local engineering shop. Do you maby have a idea what the dimentions is of your 2nd fuel tank? I am so excited to get a lada to be able to modify it. Did you at some stage have a farm jack bolted to the rear of your lada? I remember seeing photos of a lada with a farm jack bolted on the tow bar. Just cant remember if it was yours.

Thank you Ari. You should consider making brackets to mount your jack on your bull bar. Then its out of the way ant that bit of weight is lower.

That is why I keep it in the boot most of the time It rusts and gets dirty and dusty outside the vehicle. Ari

Hi Charles
For bush travel the Niva is basically a 2 person vehicle. We have for years used a bag which you can buy in any good outdoor shop it is clear on one side black on the other. You fill it and leave it in the sun, and at night you have a nice shower. If we are in a place with no water we allow 10 liters each to shower and wash any clothes at the same time, so the water is used twice ;D. Ari`s second tank has no baffles, neither does the Niva main tank, but it is no problem. I am sure the tank I posted the sizes of the other day will be very close to the one in Ari`s, and should not be too expensive. You need to move the silencer and leave enough space to get the tail pipe past the side of the tank.

Hi Charles I don`t like the jack mounted at the front as if you have a bump it is liable to damage. Just remember, all these accessories like high lift jacks. freezers, extra fuel tanks are not insured unless you specify and pay the premium for them. The important place for jacking points is the back and front. This allows you to jack up high and then push the vehicle to the side hopefully on to good ground . Ronnie
