Hi Pieter
I know very little about Moz. Anyone who knows all the border posts to the surrounding countries and knows of campsites away from the main areas is welcome to post details, especially with access into Kruger and Gonarezzhou in the South of zim.

Hi Ari and Darryn;
Due to changes in my personal circumstances, my wife and I will not be able to make the 2012 tour.

Spikes I hope you and your family gets sorted soon.
I would love to go on a trip like this - but there is nothing wrong with trying for something less ambitious.

Hi gents - apologies for my long absence ! Guilty as charged! Any update on the planning the 2012 trip? If we can’t make a across border trip are we going to continue with a inland trip? I am aware of rising cost of living, fuel etc. But with proper planning we can attempt to plan a “practical” trip with some scenery & a 4x4 route. I refer to my earlier mail that we get all interested parties on a list with their locations – we can then plan from thereon. Unfortunately I will be outside SA most of the time for the rest of this year. But from January 12 onwards I will be on normal 5 weeks rotations again. Then open for any meeting / skype group meeting etc. Best regards to all Pieter Brummer

I think that is a better idea also. There are enough places in SA to go visit.

Hi Folks
I previously posted that the Sani pass may be a good choice - Demanding route, loads of scenery and enough variety in terms of camping or time share or hotels to suit every one.
The Sani pass is also in the process of being tarred, so it is something to be done sooner rather than later.

Good question Charles, but as we aren't leaving civilisation totally I dont see it as a problem, in other words the other 4WD's shold be able to keep up. ;D

Yes, The Sani is demanding but fairly straight forward. If the SJ 410 wants to be a "Niva" I am sure we can prestik a badge or two on.
Some real "Badge ENGINEERING"

I drove to the Sani border post in a Fiat Palio 1.2 without any difficulty over Easter, I know some driveways that are trickier to get up. If you want some fun, drive another 20Km along the same road . . . That's what seperates the Ladas from the poofta Mercs and BMW's, and Palio's !

I have been through Baviaans loof in a 1.7D palio. I continued on even after a farmer told me I will never make it. Well I did it, and I did it without breaking anything on the car. Slow and steady wins the race. Unless you are Aryton Senna, as he said if you do not take chances then you are no longer a racing driver.

Maby you oaks should look into the old Transkei......(Wild coast) Its rural, lots of 4x4 roads, fishing, spectacular views, cheap accommodation. And inland you can have just as much fun with plenty of interesting places like, Rhodes, Ugie, Maclear. All known for its trout. Whe have over 600km of rivers to fish in. And lots of forgotten mountain passes.

Hi Roons
There is no one who would have wanted to go on this adventure more than me. We used to do it all the time and I really miss it. However even if we were still in SA, being retired ,I doubt if we would have been able to afford to go. There are many wonderful places to go, especially in the surrounding countries if you like wild game reserves. If the adventure does not go ahead you CAN go yourself ;D ;D ;D. Enjoy the Niva and the adventure.

I agree i can and have done trips like that. We usually go student stile (ultra cheap) we did a zim moz malawi trip and it cost us 2k ea. But we where 9 in a 80s kombi. Lada trip wil be more expensive. But i would love to join a multi lada trip some time. The idea is just so good but to do it is another thing. One day this must happen! Regards Ruan

I too would love to do a trip like this, but the logistics of doing it as a group make it almost impossible. The longer the trip, the less likely it will be.
Before you even look at anything else, everyone's lada has to be working at the same time. That alone is probably the biggest hurdle given the nature of these cars. Then everyone has to be able to get leave at the same time and lastly everyone needs to have the funds available to pay for the trip at the same time.
I think to maximise the chances of success we should try for a weekend trip somewhere relatively central like sani pass.

Agreed. Weekend trips hugely under rated.
