Good Luck with that Charles.....and please let me know if you succeed :-) I've still not been brave enough to order the (wrong ?) starter motor from Pavel :-( Regards to all at LOCSA, Keith and CERATOTH Hi Keith You won’t order the wrong starter if you provide the correct part number and model details if you want a specific type. Also provide the details under Ceratoth's bonnet, giving details of your particular vehicle, to be on the safe side. Just start by emailing Pavel the photo I sent you, which provides all the starter details, and ask for the price, weight and shipping costs of that particular model. That’s how easy it is – if he can’t provide this model for some reason ask what he can supply in the lighter ones, if that’s what you want, and take it from there. The parts catalogue indicates that the starters are interchangeable. You will be under no obligation whatsoever and I find it much better than dealing with Amazon, for instance, because you are dealing with someone you ‘know’ at the other end. Pavel is incredibly helpful - I ordered recently and must have driven the poor guy mad the number of times I went back with one query or another before I actually placed my order. I even asked him to try to find me some grease nipples to replace the missing ones on Nikita’s UJ’s ( which appear to be in good condition) and although it took him a few days he managed to find me some! Needless to say Nikita is very pleased. ;D The guy really is amazing and after his dealings with me you’ll be a ‘piece of cake’! ;D Good luck! NIKKI

When my heater valve got stuck in the open position, I fitted a ball valve in the water feeding line in the engine comp. Now I can still use the heater during winter time and shut it off in summer. The Lada got a very good hot heater and is a welcome in winter time. All parts and fittings is available at any hardware store. Regards. Hercules. Wayne Perhaps you can PM Hercules and ask him how to route the pipes. I will also send him an e-mail in this regard. His mod does not bypass the heater matrix but cuts flow to it off Spikes

The first six months after installation it was good but after that and some offroad trips the niva was moving like a boat. Some others say that they like it.......

Dear All Good morning Yesterday found a broken part while stripping the Lada to fix the loud Exhaust. Herewith a pic of the part. Is it adviseable to have it welded or not? I thought of grooving, weld and have the side fitted to the egine machined, but leave the outside with the welding. Your comments is most appreciated. Kind regards Stephen Attachments:

That is the EGR valve. Block off the hole in the exhaust manifold and the other part that goes into the carb.

Hi Stephen
As Charles says remove it and blank it off. I tapped the Hole and fitted a suitable size bolt. You can remove all the equipment involved with the EGR system as it is unnecessary, and I doubt if it even still works in most cases. Once removed you will have less cluttering up the engine bay.

Hi Riaan
EGR= Exhaust Gas Reticulation. It is fitted to recycle some of the exhaust gas back into the intake mixture. Main aim is to reduce harmful emissions into the atmosphere. The EGR valve on the NIVA seems very prone to freezing up. It can be blanked off as Ronnie says.It should not harm the engine. On the 1.7i or TBI models it should show up if it is stuck(by activating the Engine Management light). That said mine does not show any fault code.

Spikes, with the EGR blocked off, as is your case, does the Check Engine light:
1> come on and stay on at startup, with no fault code 2> come on only after driving for a few minutes (can you check the fault code in this instance?)

I was thinking of maybe installing a stainless steel exhaust on my Niva with a catalytic converter. Can anyone tell me the advantages and disadvantages. I know the reduce emissions etc but may be a bit expensive (I only want to do my bit to reduce this global warming story, by the way, has anyone noted that this winter was not a winter as we used to know it a couple of years back). I know where Johnson Matthey is located if anyone wants to knock on their front door for some ;D. They have a chopper landing almost everyday delivering platinum for these things. . . . Strip search type of security!

On the EGR system on the Niva it is vacuum operated so I can not see a reason that it would switch the engine light on.
Darius why on earth would you want to fit a cat??
A EGR system works by letting in some of the burnt gasses back into the combustion process. This is done to reduce the amount of NOx in the exhaust gas. In theory it works great. The biggest problem, espesially on diesel engines is carbon build up. The carbon builds up in the egr valve and this causes the valve to seize. Most of the time it can be saved by cleaning it with a suitable cleaner. If it gets stuck in the closed position then no problem. The problems start when it is open the whole time. There is very little oxygen in the exhaust gasses, in other words it is just smoke. Now the engine is running a very specific air/fuel ration. Now if there is less air then the engine will run rick. This will cause black smoke, poor performance and excessive fuel consumption.
So in short i hate a EGR system. I have had many problems with them. if your Niva has a EGR still attached, working or not I recommend blocking it off. It can do no harm.
