Good day all - Any suggestions for a "replacement" gearbox that will fit in the Lada with minimum modifications?

Hi Pieter
You can try and get hold of a Fiat 124? I think. I know Jan from Centurion also rebuilt a Lada box with Audi parts but I can't remember which one.
Why? What's wrong with yours?

Hi Pieter If you can find a Fiat 125 Gearbox which looks like this.......: ........you will be able to build a gearbox with a stronger 5th Gear for your Lada. Altough the rear cover / housing of the Fiat 125 gearbox is different from the Lada's rear Gearbox Housing, the center Housings of the Lada and Fiat 125 Gearboxes are almost exactly the same. The only difference is that the oil filler Plug on the Fiat 125 Gearbox is located on the opposite side of the Housing - which means that should the Fiat 125 Gearbox Housing get used on a Lada, the Gearlever always needs to be removed to fill the Gearbox with oil. All parts which are located inside the main Gearbox Housing on the Fiat 125 Gearboxes (which looks like the Gearbox at the pic above) are exactly the same as the parts on the Lada Gearboxes. The selector fork Rods on the Fiat Gearboxes are different though - and the Lada selector forks Rods need to be used when the Rear Gearbox Housing gets bolted to the Fiat Gearbox. As mentioned - the Fiat's 5th gear is stronger (more "meat") , but the gear ratio is also slightly different. The engine RPM on a Fiat gearbox conversion is slightly higher than the engine RPM on a standard Lada (5 speed) Gearbox. If you are interested, I can send you contact details of an owner who has first hand experience about a conversion like this. Regards Danie

Oh - any local (Durban) owner who might be interested in a conversion like this:
Should you be able to find a Fiat 125 Gearbox - and you are not capable of doing the conversion yourself, just contact:
Franco Motors 244 Umbilo Road Durban
Tel 031 2014790
The owner of Franco Motors knows exactly how to do a conversion like this.

Christo. The power steering works very nice. Lost some of that nice lada feed back though. Has a bit of a boring cressida feel. Hi Ruan If the Cressida feel really gets very boring, and you ever do get the the Supercharger itch again , here's a deal : Your Power Steering mod. components - for my two Lada steering boxes (both in perfect condition), + my SC12 Supercharger which is sitting on the shelve . By the way, what is the fuel consumption like with the fuel injection modification, and who has done this mod to the Lada ? Danie

Hi Danie. I realy like the cressida feel offroad. I always drive the bananas out of my engine so i get around 10km/per litre. Think it will do better if on the open road. (think) it wil do 12 if i try. Use the lada for town driving. I wil keep an eye open for a cressida box for u. I want to do some kind of a engine gearbox swop for more vooma so im not going for the charger any more.

Danie. I did the mods preweld did the welding on the rail and intake. The steering arm was done by the local engineering shop. Did all the small bits on my mini lathe and a mill drill. The injection ecu is pretty much a diy thing too. Regards Ruan

Ok Danie. I wil phone around. like the niva steering box there are very few of them. Do u know of any good conversions that has been done? Yesterday my other niva s gearbox also whent. So now i have 2 broken cars. Jumps out of 4th and makes a bad sound when u take your foot of the petrol pedal. That realy makes me want more cressida in my niva. So if my engine ever comes out u can have my intake and fuel rail. Regards Ruan

Hi Ruan
As far as engine conversions is concern, I think you should get in contact with Douw - one of our forum members. He has done a conversion to his Lada - and to my knowledge he has been quite happy with his conversion.
Should you be a bit desperate for transport at the moment, or in future - maybe we could work out a deal. As mentioned, I am very interested in your fuel injection components - which includes the ECU as well. I am also interested in at least one of your nagged gearboxes.
At the moment I am in possession of an extra Lada gearbox , which has been rebuilt to perfection - as well as a carby intake manifold, with standard carburettor.
Should you be interested in some sort of a deal, please contact me by PM.
Regards
Danie

Danie. Toyota 4runner left hand drive steering box. Look just like the cressida as far as i can tell. There are lots of them in the usa. maybe i am over looking some serious problems but i think it can work for the lada. Cressida power steering is just to hard to find in sa. Regards Ruan.

Hi Ruan The Lada left hand drive steering boxes can not be used on our right hand drive models - and I think for the same reason the LHD Toyota boxes might not work on our RHD Ladas. Unless the Toyota 4 Runner boxes are power steering boxes ?? I've got a Nissan Skyline power steering pump in my possession - do you think it should work on a Cressida / Toyota 4 Runner power steering box ? Anyway, thanks for your help so far. For the time being I will just put the power steering mod in hold. There is a good possibility that I will buy a 2nd Lada this weekend. Should I spend more money on a steering box mod right now , my wife will kill me instantly. Regards Danie

Hi danie. I am almost shure the skyline pump will work if u can get it fitted. I am going to get me a 4runner power steering box and put it on my carb lada (in good time when all problems are fixed). The power steering is not a must have on a lada. My first one had a bad steering box ant it was exteamly hard to turn My carb other niva has 215/15 and it turns ok.

Thanks Sakkie / Hercules - you have listed quite a few items which I did'nt know about. Sakkie, according to my information the Gabriel front shock part nr. is 56172. I am not sure though - perhaps the number on my list is incorrect. I bought my Lada with a Gud Z 95 oilfilter, and I have never used another type since. I have seen other Ladas with shorter filters than the Z 95, but I must say, I do prefer the longer (Z 95 ) filter. Here is a list of SKF repacement bearings for the Gearbox. (Baxter / Ahma) The first number, listed below, is the original part no. : Part no 2101 - 1701033 = SKF 615722 Part no 2101 - 1701108 = Needle bearing, not available in SKF Part no 2101 - 1701190 = SKF 6306NR Part no 2107 - 1701073 = SKF 613441 Part no 2101 - 1701068 = SKF 616073 Part no 2107 - 1701073 = SKF 613441 (2 bearings) Part no 2108 - 1701031 = SKF NJ205ECP Thanks Danie Distributors in South Africa « Back to search Bearing Services Durban Segment: Aftermarket Address: 262 Chamberlain Road Jacobs Phone: +27 31 468 6568 Phone: +27 31 468 6598 Fax: +27 31 468 6524 SKF Contact: Sarel Froneman Phone: +27 11 821 3500 Email: sarel.froneman@skf.com for those in durban area looking for skf bearings

Hi Ruan
Did you place an order for a 4 Runner steering box ?
If so, I would really like to know whether it can be used on the Lada. I have changed my mind about tyres, and today I have ordered bigger wheels for my Lada ( set of Pittbulls from PE) .
So I would like to install power steering as well.

Ruan, I assume "tdi" means you are going to install a turbo diesel engine ? What gearbox are you going to use ?

Danie. I want to install a audi a3 tdi engine and a cressida 5spd gearbox. Still have to do my homework though. Have got a plan to mate them. I wil keep one of the nivas stock standard and make the other one a strong pothole eating car. This way i can always keep my bum in a lada.
