Hi all I bought my lada about 2 months ago. What a lovely car. I didnt get keys with it so that was the first job in the list. That I could sort out myself. fixed all and very happy. I was waiting for next week when im on leave to have the clutch and gearbox checked out..... But now I bigger problems.... On my way back from and angling meeting a heard serious krunshing funny noises. Called my naighbour for help and he said tha the dif is broken or something like that and the propshaft is now hitting against it. Hi Suzette
It is most likely the universal joints that are on the way out. They do make horrible noises when badly worn. As they are very difficult to grease regularly, they often are "overlooked". U-joint or a similar workshop may be able to rebuild them with local parts. Otherwise your nearest "dealer" Centurion Lada may be able to supply the kits.
Good luck

Hi Gav Have you found a replacement UJ that will fit the NIVA knuckles? But then again you probably have Lada spares close by. Looks like your Cricket team will beat the Proteas today. spikes

Hi All Havent been on the forum for a while. Was bussy with preparations for the Inter Provincial Angling Tournament for the SAPS. That behind me now I can spend some time with my lada. This weekend is the big day. Taking out the gearbox, master and slave cillinders as well as replacing the clutch kit.
When i bought the lada it didnt want to go into 4th gear. The clutch pedal also stay under when pushed in. When I drive I sometimes have to pick up the pedal with my foot otherwise it wont go into a gear.
Will keep u up to date.
Does anyone know if the seals for the master and slave cillinder is available in RSA?

Hi Zet
I think that the seals are the same as for the master brake cylinder and I the seals on the Uno might be the same. If you do not see any leaks on the system there might be air and gunk in the system and you should try and bleed the system until all the old fluid is gone and replaced by fresh fluid. That might improve things somewhat.
If things still don't improve I would suggest that you replace both cylinders rather than just the seals. They are not that expensive if you order from Pavel.
Keep us posted Marius

Hi Steve,
honing the cylinders will be beneficial and was considered standard practice in years gone by.

Hi Zet
Once you have removed the following bolts from the bell housing you should be able to pull the gearbox: There are three (3) bolts keeping the starter in place. There are four (4) small bolts at the bottom of the bell housing. There are four (4) large bolts on the corners of bell housing. The one at the top right hand corner can be difficult to remove and you need to take extra care not to strip the head.
It also helps to remove the complete gear lever but you must remember to to ONLY UNDO the OUTER three nuts in order to remove the gear leaver.
Hopefully I remembered correctly, but once you've removed all the bolts on the bell housing the box will pull free - provided that you've removed everything else that is keeping the gearbox in place. Support the box at all times.

Thanx Marius. We dit exactly as u described now. But the gearbox won't release. Feels as if it is stuck at the pilot bearing at the flywheel

Hi Zet
I think there is a couple of small M6 bolts which are loosened from the FRONT of the bell housing. They hold the steel shim plate to the gearbox.at the bottom.

Use a large flat screwdriver or something flat and work your way slowly around and try and work the corners free. You can also try and lift the box slightly whilst you're at it. Get the box as straight as possible underneath the car. It should finally budge with a some force - just don't drop the box.
It might just be a broken piece on the clutch housing that jams it or rust on the pilot bearing or the shaft - but I doubt it.

A question to u guys I bought the clutch kit as mentioned in the parts list of spikes On the clutch plate of the lada (old one) there are some metal plate things over the normal "fingers" of the plate and the new plate doesnt have that. I dont know how to explain what i mean. will try to post picks later.

Hi Zet
That sounds like an original clutch you are taking out. Your new one will be fine.

Thanx Ronnie One thing less i have to worry about.
The next step was taking the gearbox apart. almost all the bearings need to be replaced. Think this is going to cost a fortune.

Ari posted a list of the gearbox bearing numbers. From a post of Danie it seemed that all the gearbox bearings are available locally except for the needle roller bearing. There was also problem with the heat range of non Lada oil seals.
If you can't find the list of bearings that Ari posted drop me a PM.

When I was looking for the bearings for the gearbox locally a few months ago, I could not find them, but Sharkie had at least 1 local bearing when I took the GB apart. I dont remember which one and I have misplaced my list. I ended up getting the gn and diff bearings I needed from one of the local importers from Pavel, the company was "Ari's Niva Spares".

Hi All This is the list that Danie posted
Here is a list of SKF repacement bearings for the Gearbox. (Baxter / Ahma) The first number, listed below, is the original part no. :

Thanks
Danie
So I went to SKF in Vereeniging and this is the result:
Part no 2101 - 1701033 = SKF 615722 (R450) Part no 2101 - 1701108 = Needle bearing, not available in SKF Part no 2101 - 1701190 = SKF 6306NR (R135) Part no 2107 - 1701073 = SKF 613441 they dont make these anymore Part no 2101 - 1701068 = SKF 616073 they dont make these anymore Part no 2107 - 1701073 = SKF 613441 (2 bearings) dont make these anymore (same as above) Part no 2108 - 1701031 = SKF NJ205ECP (R285)
Just for your information

Have you tried Bearing Man? They carry/can order from various suppliers such as Timken or FAG

Hi Zet
Looking at those prices that you were able to get you might as well try one of local guys. They should have everything you need. If you can afford to wait another two weeks or so you should try and get the lot from Pavel.
Marius
PS spikes I see you mention the needle bearing being in your list. I presume you meant the pilot bearing?
