Ps to the above: There are two distinct schools of thought on the gearbox bearings. The one says Agents only and the other says Bearings Man or similar is fine. When my bax was overhauled in 2010 local bearings were used. 12000 km on still OK

Also just follow the manual and you cant go wrong. Getting hold of the bearings locally can be a bit of a mission. Your best bet would be Pavel. www.ladapower.comCharles

Thanks both. Jan, if you've not got one (old good one will be fine) I'll see if Neil can get hold of a re-rubber kit for me. Regards, John.

Hi Shaun
It is not difficult to do the job on your own. I am "old" and had no problems. Sit the gearbox on a trolley jack at the correct angle and use a tie down ratchet to hold it there. The rest should be easy. Make sure you have a couple of long extensions for the gearbox bolts.

The clutch kit you can get local.
Bearing man has most of the bearings.

It might be easier if you strip the bearings out first and take them with you to bearing man.

Hey Shaune.
First time removing the transmission: two days. Second time: about 4 hours both times alone, using a roller jack and several ratchet straps going through the engine compartment and the car interior. Fidgeting with the straps is what took the most time, so if you can get yourself a lift or a pit (or a handy helper) it could be done in half the time.
1. You need to get the car up a decent amount to give yourself enough room to work and space to lower the transmission and transfer case, but not so high that your jack can't reach it.
2. Clutch is pretty straightforward, just make sure to align it properly the first time to save yourself from having to do it twice. Lots of manufacturers make a clutch for the Niva, so shouldn't be too hard to find. Make sure to change the throw-out bearing at the same time and check out the pilot bearing while you've got it open.
3. Having tried both ways, I've found it MUCH easier to remove the bolts connecting the doughnut to the transmission and leave the ones that connect it to the transfer case. Completely remove each bolt, otherwise you can get in a situation where you trap the other bolts as the doughnut can't spin.
4. YOU DON'T NEED A HAMMER FOR THIS JOB. Everything needs to go into place smoothly and line up just right. If it doesn't go on, back it off and try again.
Otherwise, I think you can find all the info you need on Jan's site as well as some great resources through the links on Baxter's pages.
I used an SKF bearing to replace the input shaft bearing, but they can be pretty expensive. Again, Baxter's site has a link to specific numbers for all the SKF bearings that can be used with the Lada gearbox (thanks to research by Ahma). The needle bearing for the input shaft is a Lada only part though AFAIK.
I had NEVER tried anything as automotively complex as rebuilding a gearbox before I got the Lada, but thanks to all the info floating around it was completely do-able even for a novice like myself.
Give the transmission thread here a good read (wish I had before the first attempt!) and check out all the great information about how to put the fifth-gear together so it doesn't EVER come loose again.
good luck,
-Eric

Hi Shaune Here is the link to the "best fit" BUT check the articles out for yourself. You may find something more applicable. Baxter's site is under "links" on the LOCSA website on the forum page. www.ladaniva.co.uk/baxter/resources/Gearbox.htmRegards spikes

Jan, Much obliged. Hope it was a 'stand alone' and not off a cylinder or from a kit? You got my E-mails then? John

The dust boot is a very expensive one i'm affraid: i will come drink all your beer and hassle your wife to compensate as soon as i get to the UK ;D consider the dust boot as a gift from one niva junky to an other

Arrived today. Again, thanks, and for the present too. What is it? Looks like a valve gap adjuster? If so, it'll come in handy on my friend's Niva (mine's hydraulic). John
