Hi guys, Went to my mechanic so he can take a look at my brakes and also toque that nut for me He unfortunately gave some other bad news, according to him the inner tie-rod joint has excessive play and needs to be replaced, it seems to be the major cause of clicking that I heard Any body got one for me? Ventzel do you have it in stock? Also he said he said I need to fit a larger lining to my rear brake shoes and have the drum skimmed, any opinions on that? Hanno

I read around a bit on the forum and saw now there is a way to adjust the rear brakes (mechanic said he couldnt see a way to do it hence the need for replacing brake shoe lining)

Did the mechanic not mean have rear shoes relined with new friction material? Brake and clutch franchises can do that. The drums are aluminium with steel liner.

Yes spikes, That is indeed what he meant. Turns out my lada doesnt have that adjuster as shown in the manual (read somewhere that some niva's have the uno units on thats not adjustable) and that the shoes friction material are quite thin. Should have a braking lada by tommorow after thats fixed

hey guys, Bad news, brake place didnt have the correct friction lining size. The mechanic said he could take the shoes to Ferobrake in Newcastle. Is it worth replacing the friction lining or should I get new shoes? How easy is it to obtain the shoes?

Hanno try Ventzel in Pietermaritzburg. His details are in the spare parts suppliers thread. If he doesn't have you may well have to look to order online at www.ladapower.comTjeers Steve

Get a quote for the new complete shoes and what relining your own shoes will cost. There is nothing wrong in relining brake shoes. Question though why is it an odd size? Were the drums not skimmed at some stage?

Get a quote for the new complete shoes and what relining your own shoes will cost. There is nothing wrong in relining brake shoes. Question though why is it an odd size? Were the drums not skimmed at some stage? "Brake drums. Examine the brake drums. If the working surfaces have deep risks or excessive ovality, chisel the drums. Then grind on a machine tool with abrasive fine stones. This will help to increase the lining durability, and improve the uniformity and efficiency of braking. The maximum allowable increase of drum nominal diameter (250 mm) after turning and polishing is 1 mm. These dimension limits should be strictly observed, otherwise, the durability of the drum, and the efficiency of braking will be decreased due to reduction of drum rigidity."Drums specs from page 132 of the workshop manual. If the dia of your drums is more than 251 mm new drums should be fitted.

thx Spikes, Ventz doesnt have new shoes in stock so I would have to order some and postage is 53 USD already!
Gonna do the relining and skimming thing. As far as I know it hasnt been skimmed before but will check the diameter
Not sure if the lining is an odd size, apparently the brake guy said he could order that size friction lining but didnt keep it in stock.
As always thx for all the handy advice

There is not much tolerance to play with. It should really be just to get to inner diameter 100% circular

Cv22k boots for the wheels from auto spares shop and original only as a permanent replacement for the intermediate shaft Tjeers Steve

As far as I know they are just different terms for he same part. I'm not sure about he tie rods, but he ball joints are unique to lada. Have a look at sj's thread about about his transplant for details of suppliers for both.
