my 3-bearing cv joint is now 10 000 km in the Niva. While doing an other job the cv joint had to come out. I was not so happy when i saw this: it's not so bad that the cv jouint has to be replaced any time soon (i hope). You can feel the mark with your finger tip, and that should not be happening after only 10 000 km. I must admit that i drove around with a broken boot for about 500-1000 km. Maybe some water came in the joint, i don't know. Yesterday i've put the second 3 bearing joint in the niva. i will pull it apart after 10 000 km to have a look. think i'll be ordering some OEM joints with pavel soon

What I do know about cv joints is that water and dirt will ruin them very much out of proportion with the lifetime of a unit that did not get water and dirt in.

My tripods cv joints (Nobel) after three years and about 25.000 km still work perfect........also the silicone cv boots ( red MS inner- outer) which have installed before one year. Regards, Dimitris

I'm getting that telltale tuk-tuk from the front left.It is making a noise when under load and doesn't matter whether I'm going round a corner or not.
Is there an easy test that can be done to see whether it is the inner or outer cv that is noisy without taking the axle out?

Well, would you like to strap yourself to the undercarriage and listen?
Sorry, just me being cocky, I dont think there is.
What I would do however is look for signs of grease spraying everywhere and then check the boots for cracks, it is more than likely that one.

I was hoping you weren't going to say that. The looking for the broken boot part not the bit about strapping myself under the car:)
Both cv boots show signs of cracking from age but neither appear to have split all the way through. I guess you know what I'll be doing this weekend.

While I don't mind the plane ticket, I'm scared that I wont be able to afford what you consider to be a few beers....

Well realistically, how many could a person drink in the time required to change the boots? 12? Have a great day Tjeers Steve PS I meant cases!

The inner left cv cage was cracked and had to be welded. The remaining cv's were just serviced with new boots and grease. I should get the car back tomorrow.

Ok, so things didn't quite work out like planned. One week later, and I still have a clacking noise from the cv's.
The shop advised that they have repaired all the cracks in the cages, so if the joints are still making a noise there is no alternative but to replace them. Seems like I need to start saving for new joints.

The tuk tuk noise only happens under load like when accelerating or driving up a hill. I thought this was more typical of cv's than bearings, but im open to suggestions.
The bearing is free and smooth when I spin the wheel which is why I thought it was ok.Is there any other way to test it?

www.cvaxles.com/images1.htmBefore the front wheel bearing collapsed on my NIVA,a grinding noise could be heard. It was constant and was accompanied by excessive vibration. Clunky noise when turning is most likely cv related. On acceleration my first check would be for worn universal joints Spikes

the inner cv's make nocking noises under load when worn. In most cases it's the outer cage wich is the problem. They also make the same noise after a suspension lift, although they seemed fine before. The balls touch an other spot in the outer cage and in most cases that's just on the edge of the worn spot. When the boot is still ok and there's grease in them they will last you for some more years. Believe me, before they finally go and leave you stranded with 2 wheel drive they make that much noise you'll be afraid to drive it Pavel has the tripod cv's on stock. i have them (other brand) and i'm very happy with them. left tripod inner cvright tripod inner cv

14.2 Using a long socket extension hit the inner race with a large hammer while clamping the sideshaft to separate the sideshaft from the CV. 14.3 Push the race and cage in on one side and remove the balls from the other side, one at a time. You can push on the race with a screw driver to exert more force. The push the other side in to remove the other balls. 14.4 2 of the holes where the balls are located in the cage are larger than the other 4. turn the race so that the one ridge fits into the hole an twist it to remove. 14.5 Now align the 2 larger holes with the ridges on the inner edge of the CV housing and remove. 14.6 Clean all old grease out and reassmble in reverse order.

Hi Ari, The cracks in the cages have been welded, new boots and new grease fitted but they are still making a noise.
btw I think Jan and Steve will disagree with your tutorial. None of the steps mention beer
