Hi Steve
It would be interesting to know if local CV repair shops can repair the CV on the intermediate shaft. Have any owners tried ?

Gentlemen Good day. thanks for your comments CharlesSent you a PM @ Ronnie I'll take my old, original, faulty, replaced RH CV-Joint to Disa Motors in Paarl. They are the CV joint Specialist. Maybe you should give the Lady @ Swales a call and listen to her comments. Please post an update. You can maybe ask her for reference on repaired CV's. Still need to clean all the grime. Regards

Hi Stephen
Looks like your friend has made some very interesting mods. Perhaps he would like to join us and share some of his ideas with us?
The CV Ari got from the UK is a hell of a lot cheaper that what our local boys can do AND it is apparently a huge improvement on the old one. That sounds like a good investment to me. Well it's a 1000 times better than a refurbished one at more than double the price!

Hi Stephen
I bought mine from Lada UK. Email the guy and ask what type of joint , the new 3 spherical bearing type or the old 6 ball type. Lada UK has the new type for +- 55 GBP and then add postage.
Easiest payment method is paypal.

Good morning Danie I'll ask him during the week-end whether he's interested to joint/comment and some photos and some technical info. I've PM'd his contact no to Charles, don't know whether they've been in touch.

Hi Stephen
Many thanks. Today I stumbled across a power steering pump, and I am really interested in Pieter's steering rack conversion.
I do not want to drive him crazy, but if Pieter is not interested in joining the Forum, I would also appreciate his contact details.

Explaining a (in this case) "modification" , when not face to face, many times helps one to see clearly where you can improve your own design.

I need some help here: since i lifted my Niva +- 10-11 cm (wich is way to high, i know, but it stays that way) i keep destroying the cv's on the diff side. As long as i stay on road or i do just some green laning, there's no problem. But if i take her for some more serious offroading the inner cv's start to rattle. When the cv's start ratteling the boots are always torn. When i use the stock inner boots, they even don't survive 1 week home-work travel. When i use outer boots on the inner cv's, they last longer, but don't survive offroading. Last week i mounted silicone boots, because they seem to be able to flex a bit more. Not tested offroad yet. I always use high quality greese, and i put in the correct amount of it. Now, in an ettempt to eliminete this problem, i want to use a different inner cv, the one with 3 rollers in the housing, without seperate inner cage. The rollers are mounted on needle bearings. I think they are more up to the job. Problem is, i can't seem to find these things. I do know they exist. - Dous somebody know where i can get them? - Anyone has some experience with these joints? - Anyone has lifted his niva + 10 cm (4 inch) and has NO problems with his cv's? I will see now if the silicone boots can keep the grease inside, but in case they don't, i want to try the other cv's.

Hi Jan
Neil from the UK will be able to sort you out quickly - perhaps the new type CV can rectify your problem..
The angle of the side shaft/cv on a lifted Niva (like Ari's)always seemed to me to be problematic - esp when the suspension has to work hard. You have now confirmed my concerns in this regard.
I do believe if you really want to do a serious lift on the Niva you should change to a solid axle on the front or do the portal conversion.

I only have one of these in on the left side, my right one is still the one with the balls in. I havent picked up a problem yet with it but I only put the left one in in january 2011 (this year and my Niva has been standing most of the year). Will be driving it regularly again now and also will be offroading so I will let you know. Ari @ Spikes: Those are photos of my CV on my bed

Hi Allan
Noise like that could be a number of things. Another method is to press a piece of wood or plastic up against the general area of the suspect engine, and press the piece lightly against your ear. This way you will be able to more or less pinpoint where the noise is coming from.
It may still be the timing chain/shoe/bolt that is the cause. Remove the valve cover and and test the chain for slackness with a screwdriver. There should be no slack.
It may even be something like a loose splash plate or the fan hitting against the cowl - however the fan noise should not go away - but you never know.
However if it is the fan you should check for movement on the water pump's shaft. There should be none.
Let us know if you find anything.

Hi Allan
Marius has given you sound advice. I would quickly replace the so-called Centurian "thermostat" as soon as possible as the motor runs very cold with it.

Hi Marius and Ronnie
Thanks for the advice, I checked the fan, it is not touching anywhere and the water pump shaft is nice and tight.
After reading various forums today, it seems the most likely cause may well be worn slipper pad or chain tensioner, or even stretched chain. I will remove the tappet cover this weekend and have a poke around.
Seems I will be importing some spares sooner than I thought...
Man it never stops!
Fortunately, as most of you guys, I am an absolute Lada fanatic and have wanted one since I went to a 4x4 meet near Pretoria, just as the original 1600 was first imported to SA. the PTA dealer had a demo model entered in the competition and it proceeded to humiliate almost all the opposition!
So let's hope it is timing chain tension and not something more serious...
Thanks
Allan

Hi Allan
do not start or drive the NIVA before you physically checked that timing chain. It can cost you dearly.

Hi Charles
I also use that boot, it is a good fit. As far as grease goes Use a good (brand) CV grease. I don`t know if Vincent will give you advice on the grease as he is in Botswana.

Ok, I have found the CV22K's smaller opening (going over the shaft) way too big. Does the clamps close it properly then? The bigger opening (going over the CV housing) fits perfectly.
I have found that the CV19K sits nice and firm on both ends for the inner and outer CV.
When I did my left CV boots the guy from Midas gave me CV19K's as it is what they have correlating with the Lada specs they have. I fitted them but then saw the CV22K's being recommended on the forum. I was also scared that the CV19K's might be too tight. So I drove all over Josie to find the CV22K's. When I fitted the outer one I saw the issue with the CV22K's. They were way bigger (diameter) than the shaft and I could not see how they will close/seal properly.
I then found the guys on the USA Lada forum recommending Audi 100 CV boots. So I phoned Midas and they informed me that the Audi 100 CV boot is the CV19K boot. So I got new ones and fitted them again.
So, if someone could please tell me how they made the CV22K's seal it would be good as I need to do the CV boots on my right side as well.
