Hi Guys
Thanks for all the tips, I eventually gave up and went to a auto-electrician, who helped me sort out the electrics, but it was a matter of me telling him what to do, thanks to all the advice from all of you (especially Ronnie, Thanks)
So all seems well with the Lada electrics, we even managed to "mask" the relay problem that was staying on, draining my battery, for the first time in 4 years, I do not have to disconnect the battery every night!
But being a Lada...there is always something new to deal with. Now when I start the Lada, it gives a metallic rattling sound just a second or 2 then idles normally, without any further unusualk noises. I hope it is not my water pump or timing chain tensioner. Have not had a chance to look at it yet, but it seems to be worse when the car is warm and progressively getting more rattly on starting as the days go by....
Any ideas?
Thanks
Allan

Hi Allan
Glade you have managed to get your electrics under control. As far as the noise goes I would quickly tension the timing chain tensioner to start with and see if that cures the noise.

Hi Allan I have found that the Lada is a rather "touchy feely" little car and NEEDS you to tinker daily It will always present something new for you to scratch your head about. Regards Vincent

Hi All My battery has packed up. Existing EXIDE battery does not have model number written on it. Does any one know which model battery is used for the 1.7i. I personally prefer a willard, so the willard mod number would be great. Much appreciated. Des

The best battery for Lada Niva RHS steering wheel is 635. In 635 the battery terminals are protected from 2 sides.
Could be in use also some other codes - esp. 622 which is cheaper. In fact 622 has almost the same specifications but the battery terminals are not protected - it's for driver's risk of short circuit. Or if your cable terminals are not the factory ones but replaced with local ones - it's easier to fit them on 622.
I can see your car is 1.7i - that means your metal fuel pipes are almost touching the top of the terminals, be careful there.
Factory cable terminals are preferable - they are made from galvanized steel, they are smaller and weaker but do not collect acid oxide and it's easier to operate them with spanner No.10. The local ones are bigger and stronger but are made from brass and often collect oxide.
I believe the top brand of all batteries here is RAYLITE - they use them in all exclusive cars - if you have budget - go for it; but as every good thing the price is also good.

Hi Ventz
From experience the best battery available in South Africa is Deltec. I have had them last for 8 years. There is 4 still in the Landy which have been there since 2005.

Hi All Congratulations Ventz and Happy Birthday Steve. Thank you all for your input. I bought a 622 @ R620.00. Problem solved. Ventz, my Father-in-law, who owned my Niva before me thinks like you. He insulated the fuel line with a piece of hose pipe to prevent any short circuiting. Thanx Des

Hi Des
I am a bit after the party but never the less I have a Raylite 635C fitted. I am not sure if all new btys are like this but supposedly you don't ever have to fill or check the bty water.
My previous bty was the original Russian one and it lasted nearly 8 years - hopefully this one will do the same!

Hi Marius
I reckon the average battery does not last for 8 years. Before I started using Deltec I don`t think I had any battery last longer than 4 years. I started using Deltec as they are the most common battery on standby generators used for essential services, where there was no question of the set not starting on demand.

My battery is also Raylite 635 and it's 8 years old in daily use; still working like a bomb. If I'm away for 5-6 weeks I just disconnect the terminal and later it starts with no difficulties.
Beware of the Dixon batteries - you will be lucky if last 1 year.

Hi All, I collected my Optima 75AH Blue Top from Deltec today. It does not look like your normal battery, thats for sure (see attached)! Advantages of the Optima yellow and blue tops (not with the dark plastic casing) for 4 x 4 applications: It is a combination of a normal start battery and a deep cycle battery - last much longer than a normal start battery if additional electrical/electronic equipment is used. Can be mounted upside down if required and can even be fitted inside the cab (user friendly vent holes supplied - can easily fit a vent pipe over it). Very vibration resistant due to patented construction. Better heat resistance. The personal service I received from one of the directors of Deltec, Peter, was exemplary. If all company directors are like that SA is heading for greatness. Regards, Fanus Attachments:

Fanus, that is a very interesting battery. I have never seen something like it. I'd be keen to know how well it works.
Oh, how much did you pay for it?

Hi Fanus
Thanks for the info! It does seem that the battery is heavier than the normal say 622 or 635?

Hi Fanus
For many years I have only used Deltec batteries, as far as I am concerned there is no other battery. I don`t know much about the Optima batteries, but I saw them years ago in the UK magazines.

Hi Guys, It is the first time I bought one of these Optima batteries and it is indeed heavy (but much, much lighter than the equivalent output normal battery). I first read about them a few years back on a website for the purpose built off-road race vehicles they use in America (die Amerikaners is regtag mal, dink ek). I was impressed when I saw where they fitted these batteries in the vehicles - some even mounted on their sides and tiny in comparison to normal batteries. My focus is of course a battery that will last years off-road even if you use a winch, and one of these off-road fridges etc, and it is relatively small in size (not output) - a Lada is small. I may even fit an electric air-con pump to my Niva at some stage (I found one recently available overseas, but is a bit expensive to bring in, so if anybody is interested in sharing the transport it will be much cheaper). Super-efficient, extremely reliable and can be fitted anywhere in the vehicle - weighs +- 3Kg's). Ronnie the price of the battery obviously depends on the size you choose and the type (I think you will agree I decided on the mother of them all - for most Lada owners total overkill); R2829.48 including VAT. Only time will tell if it was worth the money, but from the comparative output graphs I saw during my research is worth every penny, especially if you take into consideration the remote places I visit on my own with my family. Without a battery you are dead (also very applicable to Australia). I hope the info is of some help. Regards, Fanus

Hi Fanus
I have just remembered it was in Land rover Owner International magazine that I saw them advertised in, and I stopped buying that many years ago. I have found that Deltec batteries routinely last for close to 8 years, and longer. With other makes this is rare, with some just managing to last into the13 th month, just after the guarantee expires.

Hi Guys
As far as my metallic rattle goes, I adjusted the timing chain, as suggested by Ronnie, but it has made no difference and the metallic rattle (clatter?)is now starting to become more prominent, it now clatters when idling too and continues until it reaches 2300 rpm, then it all starts to sound normal. The Lada still pulls well and it does not smoke or anything. I am very worried now, as I was always proud of the fact that the engine was in good working order, that is why I spent all the effort getting the other issues sorted.
I must mention at this stage, that this Lada was also the product of Lada Centurion's thermostat mod, (by previous owner) where Jan replaced the original thermostat with the restriction pipe (yes I know we always need to run with an original thermostat, I have been reading this forum and others for years!) It was one of those items I have been meaning to get to replacing with an original thermostat...eventually, but it was down on the list of "to do" items.
The Lada has only done about 3000 km with this restrictor mod, so I am not sure it it was the cause of my Lada's clatter?
Any suggestions, would be appreciated?
Thanks
Allan

Hi guys
Took the tappet cover off and the chain was so loose, you could pick it up with two fingers. After inspecting the chain tensioner shoe and the slipper pad on the other side, they were in very good condition. So I looked at the actual tensioner and it was stuck and was not adjusting when the cap with the collet was loosened. So took it out, gave it a good clean, then put it back in, re-adjusted the tension as per the book, chain nice and tight and now the motor sings like a sewing machine again!! Thanks to all the advice from this forum, otherwise it may have been expenive...
While I was under the Niva, the next problem presented itself.... there is a small hole in the left front outside CV boot and grease is leaking out. Any advice as to what boot can be used, or do I have to import a Niva boot? Not being an expert, is there a specific grease to be used, or any bearing grease good enough?
Thanks
Allan
