Hi Ari
Mine does not have one so I can`t fiddle. I also agree with you, as long as the separator is firmly fixed and not interfered with it should last a long time.
Ronnie.
PS Students also have a lot of spare time ;D

Thank you for all the response guys – the advice and assistance given on this forum is amazing! There was no sign of the petrol smell today and I re-looked and sniffed all the possibilities as per the suggestions. So, I don’t think there is a leak and think that what happened the other day must have had something to do with that pipe. I was aware of the Vapour Separator Box but due to the poor quality presumed the system I had would be better. Having said this, I’ve often wondered about the safety aspect, and have thought of replacing it, but keep putting it off because those fuel lines look quite complicated. ;D NIKKI

Now that's a idea. Some copper pipes and a soldering iron is all that is needed to make one.

Hi Silvio
What you have made is exactly what I was going to make, but never got around to doing. Providing the pipes have enough capacity it will work fine.

I had an issue a while back with the separator tank and removed it. Replaced it with a couple of brass t pieces obtained from the hydraulics shop and an in-line fuel filter from a golf carb model. So far I have had no problems but would like to increase the size of the filter to the one that fits on a Nissan , very much bigger than the golf one. Will try and post pics if I get around to removing the side cover.

I want to do the same thing! Have you got the Nissan model or parts number for me?

Hi Mark
You will find on a warm day when the tank is full and the inside temp is 50 and beyond the petrol will pour out above the petrol cap. You need the separator box capacity for the petrol expanding due to heat.

I would say best one to use would be the one for a Nissan Sentra carb model. It is huge compared to the golf one. There is a sentra at work. Will snap a pic for you tomorrow.

I had a how to on my old website about addapting the vapour system at a 1600 model. They don't have the big sepeartor box, but it should work fine on a 1700 also. I will put it back online and post the link here

Hi Damian
The smell is almost certainly from the vapor separator box and it is almost impossible to fix them. Rather order a new one and be careful with the small pipe connections. Heat the ends of the pipes in hot water to soften them before trying to connect them.

Hi Ronnie,
Thank you very much.. Do you know if there are any SA suppliers that stock these or will I have to order from overseas?
Thanks,
D

Thanks Spikes,
I chatted to Ventz briefly.. The line was quite bad but he has a metal pipe of sorts that works in place of the Vapour Separator box at R1500
A bit more than I had expected.

Hi Damian If I were in your shoes, I'd fit a "t" piece and place an order with Pavel when next you order from him. Do not see the "t piece" as a permanent solution.
If you want to go the pipe route, there are very clear notes or "how to" in the thread link. The pipe setup IS a permanent solution.

Hi Spikes,
I completely agree with you (and Ari for that matter, he sent me a link to a Vapour separator that is $14), thank you for all the help and advice.

D

Hi all
Pavel has the original plastic version of the tank available for U$14. I got the metal version from the UK (which is Euro3 Standard) for about R100 (ZAR) but I did not pay any postage or tax on the part. The metal version is well made and treated for rust and should outlast the lifetime of the car. You can probably import it for around R200.
The only very minor hassle is that you have to remove the rear taillight to install the box and you also need a T fitting as the inlet and outlet is slightly larger than the original.
Look on page 102 (A244) of the Parts Manual and make sure you order the Euro3 Standard and not the Euro4 Standard. I think the difference is in the number of additional parts for the Euro4?

Thank you Marius.
I got my Lada back today.. It's going really well, I am very happy with it. Though I did get a petrol smell in the cab shortly after filling her up. I assume this is to do with the fact that petrol was leaking out of the petrol cap. Need to work out what exactly the problem is there.. I do normally tell them to fill up to the first click which solves this.. but this time I forgot to.
Maybe I need to get a new seal on the cap or I need to go back to the so called drawing board. I'm sure it's nothing big.
Cheers,
D

Hi Damian
Try and get an O-ring that matches the inside diameter of the screw on cap - a nice tip I got from Darryn and it works great.

Hi Guys....and thanks for the O ring tip Darryn / Marius. CERATOTH and I are off to buy one now. Should I remove the rhino horn before I go back onto the public roads ?.....Wouldn't want to end up with a JMPD officer 'impaled' on the front of CERATOTH. Would take ages to clean up afterwards :-) Have a great weekend and regards to all at LOCSA. Keith and CERATOTH

I have a separator box question. On the top nipple of the box there is connected a hose which is connected to a t-piece. From the t-piece one hose line goes to a hole above the filler cap and the other line is a mysterious hose that goes under the petrol tank. What is the purpose of this hose and where does it go?? Thanks, Steve
