Good Afternoon Guys......some advice please. When I got the Niva a few years back, it came with 5 spoke alloy wheels, 'shod' with brand new, out of the box, Yokohama Geolandar A/T 195/80R15 tyres. These are still in very good order and have given me no trouble at all. Is this a 'good' wheel / tyre combination for the Niva or am I simply storing up trouble in the steering box area for later on down the line ? 80+ Kms on the clock at the moment If so, what should I consider changing to in terms of both wheels and tyres ? Thanks and regards, Keith.

Hi Keith
That is the standard size as used on the SideKicks. You should not have any issues if your alignment is correct, tyre pressures correct and your steering box correctly lubircated and adjusted

I currently run 215's and I will need to change as it will negatively affect the steering box.

Hi Keith
I also run the same size and it is fine. With this size at least you have a bit of a choice in tyres.

Hi Keith Bongol did 72000km with the same combination of rims and tyre size. No problem on the steering components BUT steering to heavy for my wife to handle(staples in breastbone). So we changed to 16" tsd NIVA rims with the Nankangs. Made a huge difference and should be putting far less stress on that precious staples and NIVA steering box regards Spikes

Thanks so much for the replies. Yes the steering is a bit on the heavy side but I can cope with it at the moment....even at my advanced age. When it gets too much to park the Niva into the garage then I shall have to opt for the 16" wheels and the Nankangs......which you all seem to be raving about in terms of handling. Thanks again....and drive safe.

Hi Keith
One sure way to extend the lifespan of Lada steering boxes is to make sure that the steering boxes are properly lubricated.
The Lada steering boxes tend to leak oil, and I would not be surprised if most steering boxes out there are not lubricated at all at the moment.
When I inspected my Lada's steering box as well as my spare steering box quite a while ago, I could not find any trace of oil inside the boxes - so I have packed both boxes with CV joint grease, instead of using oil.

Hi Keith
You are not old and will be fine with the sidekicks rims and tyres for a long time. ;D

They are slightly wider than the 16" rims. They take 195/100R15 tyres "PCD" has me floored. Is it not something with transfer case that he is referring to or central differential lock perhaps? Spikes The 100 on the tyre refers to the load that the tyre can carry which would be 800kg PCD answered above Spikes. Ari

No 195 is the width, 100 in this case is the load rating, R is that its radial and not crossply, 15 is the rim diameter.

100 is the aspect ratio

Hi Spikes
Like you I thought it was the aspect ratio, but doing some research it looks as if Ari is correct and it refers to load.

195/100R15 would indicate an aspect ratio of 100%, although I've never seen a tyre with that measurement! Most 195's would be 195R15, which would indicate an automatic 80% aspect ratio. Only when the ratio is other than 80% does it tend to be shown. Regards,

Hi Hoodoo and Spikes I had on my Niva 195 100S R15 tyres from Khumo. The 100S is for load rating and has nothing to do with the aspect ratio. I could not find the site I looked at yesterday butI will try to add another site now where you will see the details. I am not very good at adding things so lets hope it works. The rating from the Khumo's (from the link that Ronnie provided)that were generally fitted to the NIVA Sidekick rims: ""KUMHO 195R15 100S KL78"" Note that "100S" is separated from the 195R15 and in this type of designation refers to a load rating, which in this case equates to 800kg per tyre
Where the sidewall rating reflects the width followed by a "/" the figures following the / designates the sidewall aspect ratio
My apologies for incorrect information
Spikes
The load rating chart can be found in my first link in reply 13

Hi Spikes
There is no need to apologize, as I was also under the impression that it indicated the aspect ratio, but in this case it does not. I used to look at the Khumo Tyre's and wonder what the 100 meant and never bothered to look it up until now. There is always something which does not conform to the rules, just waiting to catch us.

The "S" that comes after the 100 load rating is also very important when you consider buying a tyre. That is the speed rating - in this case 180km/h.

That would depend on the which rims you have on your NIVA. The standard 16" steel rims or the 15" alloy Sidekick rims.

thanks guys, my lada is currently with ventz for a major service. what is a cheaper alternative than the original tyres? Welcome to the forum. The original Russian tyres are not available in SA. The only alternative you have are the Nankangs presuming you still have 16" rims. Marius
