Thanks Ari.
I did look at all that space in the cavity next to the wheel well. On the passenger side it should be even bigger and less cluttered. I have thought that tank bags like the ones in some yachts might be useful for some extra fuel. How many liters do you think would fit in there?

Hi Spencer
Iwas thinking that for long overland trips it could be useful to have a tank made up to fit all that space on the sides and at the bottom passenger side there is 50mm space under the tank. I think you could fit a 60L tank in where the 42L one is if done properly.

Hi Ari.
I also noticed all the space around the tank. Could it have a purpose?
Every piece of useful space used in the vehicle means something can come off the roofrack. 20l more in the tank takes one jerry can of the roof.
These little cars can really get the creative juices flowing.

HI Guys.
Filled up with fuel this morning and went for a spin.
Still pi**ing out petrol. And no Charles, I did not use a fuel resistant sealant. Used some RTV on hand. I hope it wont bugger up the O2 sensor again...
But the main problem is the plug where the wiring for the pump goes through the flange. That is loose and with the tank full the petrol squirts through. Wedged it down under the cover plate with some newspaper. Will have to do for now. At least nowI know where the problem is.
Regards, Spencer

Hi Ari
I think where you have your 2nd tank is the easiest place to fit one. 2 electric pumps, 2 non return valves, a 2 way switch and you have a system which can be controlled from the drivers seat.

Hi Marius and Spencer
I was just looking at the post re the yacht tanks. How are these filled, as it is important that they are easy to fill from the outside. I also do not like a system where you need to pump or feed from one tank to the other. I did use this system on the Landy, but it was a diesel, and did not want any chance of it running out of diesel, and then having to bleed the system.

Hi Ronnie.
The idea hit me but I haven't spent much thought on it yet. It will be a challenge to fill from the outside but should be able to run into the main tank with gravity. A better system would be an extra tank where Ari's is, and then maybe use the flexible tanks for water storage. Again you would need small pumps running from the battery to get the water out in a clean manner.
Like I said, the idea is to get weight of the roof and use any available space more effectively.
And if it would be possible to fit a bigger tank in the space of the normal tank, that would help alot too.
I just realized that I will have to buy the wife a Sidekick as a moms taxi and turn Kalshnikov into a fully kitted/modded overlander...
Regards
Spencer

Hi Spencer, BEFORE you work on your fuel tank again, save yourself a lot of grief and go buy good quality stainless steel metal screws two sizes thicker than what is presently fitted to the fuel pump and the hold down screws of the tank itself. It's not the screws that are stripped but the holes in the mounting metal of the tank(for the fuel pump) and the body(for the tank itself) Watch out for over tightening the screws.Use only a screwdriver and not a driver fitted to a socket wrench. That is guaranteed to strip the holes Enjoy tomorrow's outing Regards Spikes

Hi Spencer
I have in the past had the Niva tank out and don`t remember there being much space to fit a bigger tank. The present tank is wedge shaped to suit the existing cavity. Before my Laptop was stolen, I had the web site of the company that supplies the plastic water containers to Makro, and they make a red (for petrol) tank which will fit in the same position as Ari`s. The filler pipe intrudes into the boot space as you need to miss the chassis box section with the pipe work going to the filler cap.

Hi Ronnie & Spencer, The cans I got from Makro are Addis. The link is below. www.usabco.co.za/An army surplus fuel or water bladder (80l) will fit nicely in the hollow created if you remove the rear seat. Regards Spikes

HI Spikes/ Ronnie.
The tanks I'm referring might be better discribed as bladders. They are used in yachts where you have awkward shaped spaces for fuel or water storage. My thought is if you fit the bladder in the space between the body panels over and next to the wheel arch. It wont be much, maybe 25 liters on each side.
And it will need some clever piping. It will lie over and on both sides of the wheel arch, so getting the lowest parts to communicate will help a lot.
It will also probably be safer to use it for water rather than fuel.

I am slightly confused when you say removing the rear seat will create a space for a bladder. where is the space?

Hi All. www.tanksforafrica.com have a plastic tank suitable for petrol which should be usable to fit where the rear silencer is. It looks very similar to the one in Ari`s. (from Memory) The filler cap on it should be the same threads as the 50mm plumbing waste pipe fittings. The small breather on the top I am sure can be adapted. Size 60 litre 840 x 360 x 220 deep. Is somebody still interested - I've got an extra fuel tank still fitted on Lada. It's a plastic one with metal tray and frames, situated at the place where rear silencer used to be. Capacity - 60L. Filler cap outside on the rear fender RHS. Not necessary another pump or check valves, it has only 3-way manual switch. Suitable for carb models, for injection engines needs extra electrical pump - to pump in the main tank.

Hey, I really don't have any idea how much cost these things now. I'll visit our local big 4x4 shop to see what exactly they have in stock. Will write later again.
The same one I fit to Lada in April 2006 for a gentlemen from Ulundi. Then he started a trip from the east coast to the west coast and further to the north to Namibia. Both tanks can keep your car running for ~ 1000 km on the good road; but in the desert... nobody knows.
The main silencer should be removed - at the joint above the rear axle. Then a new pipe must be made to get round.

Hi Guys.
I stopped in Klerksdorp today at a 4x4 place. Apparently Front runner has a 27L bladder for about R395. I did not get the exact dimensions, but 2 or 3 of those will give you a respectable capacity. The fitment guy was not there, so I could not get a practical opinion, but I have to go back tomorrow, maybe I'll catch him then.

Hi,
I measured my one 850x350x200.
Yesterday I visited the local 4x4 Neil Woolridge Outdoor Adventure shop and found they have only one type extra fuel tank. Very strange shape - flat and thin like basketball board with hole in the middle. Rough, made from stainless steel, capacity 42L. Price R5500.00.
And I'm back on square one, I have no idea how much to ask for my one. Please give me an offer. Comes with all accessories.

Hi Ventz
The plastic tank from Plastics for Africa is almost the same size as your one, so will be perfect for the Niva. When I have my own Laptop out later I will get their details and ask them for a price and local supplier.

Hi Guys.
The 60l tank from Plastics for Africa is available at Outdoor Warehouse for R600. But then you will still need the brackets and protective plates.
I also found the solution to my water bladder issue. Those solar shower bags will be perfect. Just need to add a filter to remove the pvc taste and toxins.
