Vincent is running 215's which I consider way to wide for the Niva and he reported that the steering on Ronnie's Niva with the Khumos is a lot heavier than his! Marius Err Chairman, that was until I had it in for Wheel alignment. Now it feels as if I am trying to move the moon out its orbit every time I take the wheel. One good spin off of this is that my wife now refuses to drive the Lada ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D hee hee Then it's time for a set of Nankangs!

Hi guys and gals This post is mainly for the benefit of our new members and also those members that are interested in the Nankang FT-7 175/80R16 as replacement tyres. These Nankangs have a full AT thread pattern and are currently selling for R770 a unit which is a huge bargain! Those members who've already purchased their sets are more than satisfied. These tyres greatly improved handling in the wet and dry and more importantly - made the steering significantly lighter which should prolong the life of our extinct RHD steering boxes. They are also nice and quiet on tarred roads. Those members that are interested - please PM me in this regard. I would like to get a third batch delivered by the end of July at their destination in the North West. Those who seriously need these tyres contact me a.s.a.p. for further details. This what the Nankangs looks like on our Niva. I have noticed that on some of the second batch the wording "AT" is added alongside 4x4WD and also marked in white. Marius Attachments:

Hi all
The 30 additional Nankangs has arrived in Cape Town which leaves us with 41 tyres that are still available. Our third batch is due to arrive in the North West Province at the end of this working week.
My aim is to order batches at the end of each month. I would advise members that are seriously interested in obtaining these Nankangs to contact (PM) me in the first half of the month that you wish to obtain these tyres.
Regards Marius

Hi Shawn
Due to strict custom control on tyres, it is almost impossible for individuals to import tyres privately to South Africa.
Where do you find yourself ?

Hi all Unfortunately I have to announce an increase in the price for the Nankang FT-7 175/80R16. The new price will be R840 incl VAT a unit. The price increase was effective from 1 July 2011, but they failed to notify me so the guys who ordered from the third batch which will arrive shortly - you scored big time! Anyone who needs new rubber anytime soon please PM me in this regard. Marius

I'm not surprised. Today I was looking for 15" tyres for Sidekick and the supplier I'm working with, kindly informed me that since January the tyre prices increased 4 times.

Hi Ventz With a very shaky US and EU economy things might get a lot worse soon Would have been nice if we were able to get them at my first attempt for R600 a unit! Let me know when your set of tyres arrive. It would also be interesting to hear from you after a test run. Marius

Hi Marius,
If you can get them for R600 it will be the deal of the century.
Just yesterday I realized we are facing a big problem with the passenger's 195/80R15.
They simply are not more available. Terminated. They are plenty of the same size but commercial ones - i.e. for use in bakkies and kombis. With hard compound, not suitable for light passenger cars and vans. Even Toyota Quantum uses the same size, I didn't know that, but Quantum is a heavy 16 seater minibus. At the moment at the tyre shops are Pirelli, Bridgestone 613, Infinity, Kumho, Hankok - all commercial.
Last year I bought for Niva - set of Michelin Synchrone and Bridgestone Dueler both for the price of R1200 per tyre and it was bargain. They told me it was some kind of special - lie; actually it has been stock clearance. Also on the market were plenty of GoodYear Wrangler and Yokohama Geolander.
Currently only Kumho has light passenger's type but how long nobody knows. With some efforts Speedy agent promised me 4 x Bridgestone Dueler with price R1950 each - the last ones in the country. Same tyres I bought from him for the price of R1200 at Christmas time; see the difference for 8 months.
Is there any chance to ask your connection in the tyre business for his opinion about that size?

Hi Ventz
The last time I made inquiry with regard to 15" tyres they only had a 195/70R15 (OD 697) commercial tyre in stock. However the same commercial tyre is also available in a 195/80R15 size with an OD of 690. They may have this in stock by now. They will probably be in the region of R900-1000 with the latest price increase. Let me know if you want me to make inquiry.

Just to report that I finally received my Nankangs here in Iceland.
They cost me about double what Marius has negotiated for you, so consider yourselves lucky!
I've already put 1500kms on them and they are fantastic rubber... I feel much more secure both on and off road and they have great traction and are not noticeably louder than the C-grade (light truck) road tires they replaced.
I can second the information from Ventzel from experience. The Nankang 'Supper Trippers' that are the only other tire available here stock for the Niva are not really suitable: they are useless in snow and poor off-road. And there aren't many other tires available with the correct width for 15 OR 16 inch rims with the right offset.
Save your money and get some FT-7s.
The only question yet to be answered is how long they last until I have to order another set!

Hi Eric Thanks for your valued input. I am quite surprised that you are paying so much more for your Nankangs but then again we are getting them at retail which is a huge bargain. Being AT tyres I am sure they won't be perfect in all conditions but I have found them very solid in the conditions I have tested them so far. Please let us know how they would handle snow. Let's hope they will last5 for a long time to come - but I think Nankangs have a good track record in that regard - so I am optimistic. Marius

Hi Marius,
Please ask your connections are they interested to import 195/80R15 - definitely passenger's tyres, not commercial. Commercial tyres are plenty here, but I had never expected that the passenger's ones will become whenever a problem. That is scary for the future.
Perhaps most than a half of all Ladas are rolling now on 15" tyres - all the Sidekicks and lot of converted to 15" standard Nivas, including my own one. Today I bought MICHELIN LATITUDE for R1520 each for a customer of mine but wasn't easy to find them. They are not available here in Midlands and I had to wait a week for a special order from JHB. If the Nankangs can vary R900-1000 it will be superb.

Sorry Ventz - the only 195/80R15 currently available from Nankang is the commercial CW-25.

Hi all
Interesting article in the October Drive out regarding tyres. It makes one just thankful again that Marius took the initiative to import the tyres and secure the pipeline. Again, a big thanks to Marius and the rest of the importing team. Is there any stock still available? My common sense tells me I should replace the 11year old spare with a Nankang. Marius please advise

Hi Spikes
If my memory serves me right we have another 42 Nankangs in stock at the moment. There has been a bit of a lull in sales recently as the unit price increased to R840 a unit, but there is already been a couple of inquiries lately.
If I had some spare cash lying around I would get myself an extra couple of these tyres.

Hi Marius, Your innitial e-mail in this thread smuggles my head; You say the 70% aspect ratio Nankang has a larger OD than the 80% aspect ratio? Is this correct/am I missing something? The way I understood aspect ratio (the "80" in 195/80/15) is that the "80" is derived by deviding the section height of the tyre by the section width). So, if the section height is 97,5mm and the tyre 195mm wide, the aspect ratio is 0.5 (or 50% (half). For the same width (195mm) the aspect ratio would be 0.8 if the tyre section height is 155mm (divide section height by section width - 155/195 = 0.794). So, the tyres being the same width, the higher the section height, the bigger the OD should be? Enlighten me my friend, I will never be too old to learn that reality is much different to what is in my head!! See www.tyresave.co.uk/tyresize.html which confirmed my understanding (and confuse me) Thank you again for your help to find us tyres for the Nivas. Regards, Fanus

Hi Fanus ;D
I am no tyre expert on these matters - all the info is from the official Nankang data sheets. Your logic makes perfect sense however and perhaps the data sheet has a typo?

;D ;D ;D ;D Yikes Fanus I see I got my numbers crossed! The OD on the 195/70R15 is actually 655 - which is quite a long way out - so my apologies all round for that little blunder Marius

Hi Marius, I am of course also not an expert in any way whatsoever; from there that I was confused (theory is easy but reality and experience of course is often a different story altogether). I have this problem with my wifes birthday: in theory a married man should remember his wifes birthday without fail. In practice you may slip (which I of course did when she did not give me the subtle hints the one year). man, did I pay for my mistake! Almost a year long. I think she now finaly accept me as I am (almost like I accepted for ten years that a Lada vibrates). Remember to ask your connection about the 185 something 14's for an old Merc Diesel (even bakkie tyres are fine). I need tyres for mine and will rather get it from him because he helps us - the Niva nuts. I have fitted a Toyota five speed box in the Merc (dit was 'n moerse modifikasie om die minste te se), so even a tyre with a relatively low aspect ration would work fine. Regards, Fanus

Hi Fanus Fortunately for me I do remember my wife's birthday - or rather - she makes sure that I don't forget! ;D I did make an inquiry to our tyre guys the day I received your message and usually they are very quick to respond. I will make another inquiry early in the coming week and hopefully have some good news for you. Marius

Hello Marius I sit with a dilema. The Rusti has 16" standard rims on. Happy days as we now have great tyres for them. The Ronster's Monster has Sidekick rims and it would seem I may have to battle for other tyres at some stage Any suggestion? Regards Vincent
