Hey guys
I'm thinking about buying a 1.7i Lada Niva (2000 model). I found the web site via some google searches and the current owner.
I'm looking for some objective advice/feedback. The Lada I'm thinking of buying seems to be in good condition, just some minor cosmetics (dash and some paint chips). Drove it and loved it. My concerns are that I'm planing to use it as my primary vehicle (only for that matter) and it seems that parts and service might be a bit of an issue (besides the 4th or 5th gear in some cases it seems). It might therefore be a bit of a problem if I have to wait for extended periods of time for parts. I'm in Stellenbosch (Cape Town area).
Any feedback or comments will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Koos

Hi Koos
Most parts are availible in SA. Mike lives in CT and has many parts, Ventz also has most parts and lives in PieterMaritzburg so with him it is couriers and overnight post.
All normal service parts are standard (like other cars) plugs , filters etc.

Hi Koos
Welcome to the Forum. As Ari says, parts are no problem and if not over the counter parts they are available overnight from Ventz in Petermaritsburg. Normal service parts are available at your local spares. It also helps if you do your own servicing which is very simple. If you are not DIY inclined there are members on the forum who will be glad to help.

Welcome to the forum Koos Parts is not a problem locally (you can get most of it) - and you can order parts from Russia and the EU. At the moment there are three local spare part suppliers. Have a good look around before you buy and avoid ones with obvious rust issues. If the car has gear problems you can fix it - but at a price. We have used our Niva as primary for over 10 years! Obviously there were some issues along the way - but she not once left me stranded and proved quite reliable and very economical. There is one catch though - you have to maintain and service the car on a regular basis. You will also need to have some basic DIY skills - that could save you a fortune. Good hunting Marius

Hi Koos
I have just looked at Junk Mail and the prices vary from R15000 to R35000. When you get to R35000 the Lada should be in very good condition both Mechanically and bodily. New dashboards are not available here as far as I know, and would be expensive to import. There are ways to repair them successfully providing you can DIY yourself. If the Lada has the original 17 inch steel rims the correct size tyre is unobtainable.

Hi
Ronnie you mean 16 inch. Send us a few pics and we will be able to give you a better idea on acceptable prices.

Ronnie obviously meant 16" steel rims. There is currently a 205/80 R16 tyre available - but the recommended size (175/80 R16) is not available - BUT we are working on it to get some imported

Hi Koos
It looks like it is already running 205 16" tyres. Looks about like a R25 000 - R30 000 Lada to me.
It depends on the smaller things, the condition of tyres, shocks, mileage.
Do all the gears in the GB work, check that 5th doesnt jump out. Go onto a dirt road and check if the Low Range and centre lock engage, and drive with them engaged for a few minutes.

Hi Koos
I'm sure this one belongs to one of our members? Her exterior looks just fine.
Warning>> DO NOT ENGAGE DIFF LOCK on a regular basis unless you are on soft ground like sand and mud.

Didn't take a look at the front seats under the covers, but the back seat is in a very good state.

Hi Koos
Welcome to the forum - like everyone mentioned, parts should not be a problem.
Just take your time, and have a close look at everything - like gearbox / transfer box noise, oil leaks at the diffs, gearbox, and transfer box, as well as indications of water leaks at the waterpump.
Water without anti freeze inside the radiator could also be a sign of poor maintenance, as well as a leak at the waterpump. ( Owners who keep on adding water due to a leak usually never bother to spend money on Antifreeze)
Also have a good look at the quality and level of engine oil at the dipstick.
I have also sent you a PM.
Regards
Danie
