I currently have 215 Wranglers on original (rusted) rims on my Lada and the steering is lighter than Ronnie's Lada. Perhaps the offset between alloys and steel wheels make a difference.

Hi Vincent
The problem with the wider tyre on the 16" rim is that it gets in the way of the body - esp on the rear axle where you need the articulation in the rough stuff - actually downgrading the Niva's 4x4 ability.
You can even damage the sidewalls on the bolt of the rear safety belt.
It is quite strange that your steering is lighter than Ronnie's 195's on his 15" rim - as a rule wider tyres should make the steering heavier.
Regards Marius

I know - Go figure... I will check out the potential articulation issue though. Last thing I need is a blow out as I do not have a spare...

It is all in the wheel alignment. Wider tyres are only heavy to turn when the vehicle is stationary.

Yes Hercules wheel alignment does play a huge role and so does tyre pressure.
A slightly harder than spec tyre would make steering a bit lighter and a softer tyre would make it harder to steer. Both however will have an adverse effect on wear and tear on the tyres in the long term.
For the sake of preserving you steering box I would recommend a stock standard tyre.

Hi Ronnie Ventz pointed out that the Sidekick's rims was a modification that he was not happy about - BUT it was probably the best they could do in an attempt to make the car more sexy and appealing to the particular market CMH were targeting. So yes I would "give way" and say the 15" rim is standard for the Suidekick ;D ;D ;D Jan had/has? some rims I was "almost" interested in and they could even be 14" What I did like about them they were "mags" - but more importantly they were made from steel. Hi guys,
An attractive offer for the fans of the big wheels:
I've got modified factory 16" rims. A ring-piece 40mm wide has been welded in the middle. Now the rim can accommodate tyre up to 235 and over. Don't oversize the standard rim, it's dangerous; we can accept one size bigger to 185 but not more. I've seen huge tyres on standard rims which scared me and even some of these fellows put tubeless tyres but rims are designed tube type. Killers on the road.
Price R125 each or R500 for all four, clean and shiny. Or to swap for standard not modified rims.

All in the eye of the beholder...
I think my 215's look fab on really scruffy rims.

I don't have picture of the rims and it's pointless to take it. For some unknown reason my computer does not like to upload photos to LOCSA.
But it's easy to imagine, just original 16" rim but wider with 40 mm. I'll refresh them spraying any colour in request to look as new.

Ventz but whoever buys then is taking the risk on their own. They shouldn't come crying to you if they break their steeringbox.

Hi Charles
According to the Operation Manual - page 34:
Ground clearance, on GVW vehicle, at 315mm static radius, at least, mm - to front suspension cross-member 221mm - to rear axle beam 213mm
I think the rear axle beam is about 2cm lower than a stock standard Defender.

We are lower than a defender but we still have to tow them out!
