Hi Charles
I do not have any knowledge about the kits but I have owned an Audi 80 GLS (1981 model / 1600cc) many years ago. The engines on those car were exactly the same as the VW engines.
The engines on those cars were mounted in line ( nr 1 piston facing the radiator in front ) and the bellhousing facing the firewall at the back. The first 1600 and 1800 VW Passat engines have been mounted like that as well.
I can't remember what the bellhousing looked like, but I often wonder whether it would not be possible to use one of those engine / bellhousing combinations, and somehow modifying the bellhousing at the back - maybe the Lada gearbox could then be bolted directly to those bellhousings.

Thats what I was thinking. Only thing is the flywheel. Vw's has a stupid flywheel design.

Hi Charles.
The engineering place that did my head two years ago also mentioned to me that he will rather fit a Golf 1800 or 2lt motor in the Lada instead of repairing the Lada engine. Apparently is the Golf motor also flat in the back and can be easily mounted to the Lada gearbox and also got much more power than the Fiat motor.
I was not interested.
Regards.

Hi Charles.
Unfortunately not because I was not really interested. I was only interested in getting my Lada back on the road and keep it standard. You really miss the beast if you can not drive it. I still drive her everyday

Hi Charles Save yourself a lot of grief and stick with the Lada motor. I am all for a mod if it improves the Lada, but I don`t like major mods which end up in most cases riddled with problems. The Lada`s motor is simple and fairly bomb proof. Ronnie

Hi Ronnie
Im not planning on ever doing a mod like that. Just curious on how it works. I like to know how everything around me works.

Hi Charles
I agree with Ronnie on this one , the Lada engine is fairly bulletproof. I'd rather find a way to increase the 1700 cc engines power.

I dont even want to modify the standard engine. Just curious. Only mod I want is a automatic tensioner.

Hi Charles I agree with Ronnie on this one , the Lada engine is fairly bulletproof. I'd rather find a way to increase the 1700 cc engines power. Ari I have researched this extensively and it is huge money, Head work, cam, stroker crank all these added up to nearly 5 times the cost of a 2.0 efi fiat twincam (145hp)

Hi Bobby
Hows the power with those carbs?

Hi Ari
I think Danie`s way with the supercharger is the simplest and easiest way to increase the power, though I think it will be simpler on an injected model.

Hi Charles What is the problem of adjusting the tensioner when you service the car, it only takes 5 minutes, so it is hardly a chore ;D. And as Mike said you at least know it is correct Ronnie

Hi Bobby Hows the power with those carbs? Throaty Can you please put up a link for that VW blog, one of those TDI transporter engines would be great!! Yep a SC12/14 on an injected Niva is the most hassle free and economical way to gain more torque,

Hi Bobby
Thanks for the info. I think even a 2.0l 8v should be nice in a niva.

Different world there, Petrol engines out of VW passats are common in nivas in Brazil, 2.0 16v 150hp! both petrol and diesels from golfs. Peugeot 504 engines. Merc sprinter van (314) engines. In fact a company there makes kits to fit 2.2 sportage engines! A local company called Aerocar makes cams, adjustable cam gears etc headers etc.

Find here 2.0 FIAT or Lancia engine, double cam or single cam. They are going straight to the existing gearbox. Easiest. Minor modification on the sump and mountings.
What do you want more? Engine from MIG-29??

MOD.
1998 - I sold two Nivas 1600 at my showroom with these engines. More power of course, but also more hungry for fuel.

The power must be fun though. i think the 1.9td is the best for a niva.

IM contemplateing a 2.0 16v efi fiat out of a Fiat coupe, 145 hp and two thirds of the nivas standard fuel consumption. Three times the pwoer with two thirds of the fuel, hard to not like that! Or a Hdi 2.0 from a 308, but this is expensive!

I think the lack of power is the Nivas biggest downfall, Just enough out in the bush and a menace on the highway
