Darrel in Gordon's Bay may just have a useable secondhand one. See thread about timing chain and components.

There is no such a thing like re-usable cylinder head gasket. Guys, please look more serious at the alphabet of the mechanics.

Not as a permanent repair, but to get a car home (in this instance) about 80 km, yes I would use a used gasket that came off in a planned repair.

To put a temporary cylinder head gasket for only 80km and later to remove it again - sorrrrry guys, I'm speechless. It's a hell of a lot of job; and I can't see how to do it on the road. Better hook a rope and tow the car.

I have a new gasket set for you. Ari Hi Ari, Out of curiosity, what is the head gasket made out of ?. When I rebuilt the MG motor, I used a copper gasket and it leaked water up some of the head studs and along one side of the block. After going through some of the Forums I ordered a composite head gasket from Payen. This cured the problem. I don`t know if this is only MG, but there were plenty of complaints about the copper gaskets. I also do not think anyone should try to reuse a head gasket. They are single use only. Ronnie

thanx arie for getting back to me, taken the head off, gaskets not blown but the head bolts were all loose, gonna take the head for pressure test before i go any further, i'd really like to keep it original but as i really can't let it stand for too long i'm hoping it's a quick fix

I've also had a gasket made @ Shim & Gasket Cpt for our 250cc Kawasaki GPX 250, turned out to be Copper. The gasket leaked and Water & Oil mixed. I did not know what the outcome would be. It was money wasted. Now I now beter and will never again use a copper gasket

Hi Stephen,
When I rebuilt the MG motor I checked the head and block with a steel rule and feeler gauges for any sign of warping. I think if I had the block and head skimmed the copper gasket would have been fine. The old gasket was copper.

OK Ronnie, another Ballgame. Our mech skimmed the top, now he's going to have the barrel also done. Hope it works this time - got a new gasket from CMSNL

seems there might be a chance that the valve seats have come loose as well....the toyota conversion starting to sound sweeter by the minute, btw masterparts have nice range of engine parts, except the rings and pistons but including waterpumps

I stand under correction here, but are Masterparts not the parts supposedly made in Germany but are actually Chinese?

Hi Stephen
When you look at the composite head gasket, you can see it will be a lot more forgiving than the copper one. I also remember there is a correct finish when skimming needed for a copper one, I remember reading about it when I had problems, but I had no intentions of stripping the motor again to have it skimmed. Apart from the time involved, it was below zero deg outside and the gas heater in the garage just about managed to raise the temp by 2 or 3 deg.
Regards
Ronnie

don't buy mastersport engine parts, exept for gaskets. You better order with pavel.
About copper head gaskets: you guys do know that they must be heated before mounting??? Nowadays you have steel head gaskets but back in the day i used copper gaskets for high compression engines. Never had problems with it.
