Hi guys. I am just about to (perhaps) order a new alternator from LadaPower and have just has an e-mail from them giving details of an automatic timing chain adjuster. Has anyone else received these details and if so 'what do you think about it' ? If a good idea; it would make a lot of sense for me to (perhaps) order the two things together. Regards to all at LOCSA, Keith and CERATOTH.

HI Keith,
Yes I saw the e-mail as well.It is a factory conversion for the 1700 Carb and 1700 TBI models. It is, as far as I know std on the Multipoint injection units.
As the alternator is heavy the additional shipping charge if any, would be negligible.
I think Jan did a write up on it, either on the Belgium site or here
Makes sense to buy.
Cheers

I was emailing Pavel last night about it and this is his reply.
"I took main information about tensioners. How it work inside - this information not avaliable.
I read a lot of feedbacks from lada owners. People are very happy. Especially lada 21214-20 owners with oil tensioner supply are not happy with OEM tensioners. And happy with AUTO."

I wonder if it will work on blocks and heads that have been skimmed due to the "longer" chain.
Ari
English copy from Spikes link
Automatic chain tensioner (ASC) "Pilot" is intended to be installed instead of the regular chain tensioner on VAZ classical family. ASC "Pilot" after installation requires no maintenance and is completely automatically tightens the chain of car as it stretching. Favorably with analogues that do not require a supply of oil line, which prevents it from abrasion and loss of oil pressure. The design of the plunger are no elements which eliminates jamming tensioner! Step move the tensioner is only 1 mm To optimally track the chain tension. Due to the efforts of a calibrated spring tension ASC "Pilot" practically does not wear shoe chain tension. As a result, the installation is significantly reduced engine noise, as well as increased resource for all nodes belt through the correct chain tension.
Service
In the operation of the product, "Pilot" is automatic and does not require adjustment of operations and maintenance.
Warranty
The warranty period the product is set at 25 years from the date of sale.
The result of applying the auto tensioner on the engines of VAZ 01-06, 21214 Several times the life of all the details of the timing by continuously monitoring the tension of the chain and excluding the possibility of increasing the parasitic load in free circuit branches. Improved engine performance because of the exact timing of the phases of the valve.
Chain tension is performed irrespective whether or not the engine is running.

For maximum benefit of the auto adjuster, I would say one should fit a new shoe and slipper pad at the same time?

Good Morning Guys. I am about to place an order for the auto tensioner, plus it would seem a good idea to also order shoe(s) and vibration damper(s) at the same time as they are not that expensive compared to the likely shipping costs. I am happy to order' it would seem to be 4 of everything so far ' provided I get firm promises that people do want them and will 'pay up' when they arrive :-) AutoTensioner is US$26 and shoes and dampers are around US$9 each according to LadaPower's web site. (The site is only showing these items for injection models and Ceratoth is a 'carb'. I have e-mailed Pavel to ask for the correct part numbers for my Niva). If I am going to order lots (!) I shall need to know exact model specifications as it would seem that there are 'different bits' for different models. This especially seems to apply to injection models versus carbs and also between 1600 and 1700 engines. If you are still interested in ordering, sent me your Niva's model specs and I will e-mail these to Pavel, get him to confirm what needs to be ordered, I will then get back to you guys for confirmation and once confirmed Iwill place an order. Sorry to be so "anal" about this but it is just not that easy ordering for different models and it's a long way for me to have to travel to 'swop pieces'. ps Good Luck at the 'vets' tomorrow Steve (Ihar). Regards to all at LOCSA, Keith and CERATOTH

The $44 (26 for tensioner plus 18 for damper and shoe) will equate to roughly R660 per person including postage and packaging to SA, then it is local distribution fees.

Hi guys... I think I must have killed several fairies just before I started this mission ! So the situation is as follows... Pavel has provided me with the details he needs for me to order the correct automatic tensioners plus the shoes and dampers.
Niva 1600 Carb 1) Lada Niva Chain Tensioner AUTOMATIC 2) Lada Niva Tension Shoe 1600 OEM 3) Lada Niva Vibration Damper 1600 OEM
Niva 1700 Carb 1) Lada Niva Chain Tensioner AUTOMATIC 2) Lada Niva Tension Shoe 1700 OEM 3) Lada Niva Vibration Damper 1700 OEM
NIVA 1700 Monoinjection (The same as 1700 carb, easy to understand that you have mono injection niva - round air filter as on carb niva and no carb.) This is for example 21214 ,21214-10, 212146-10, 212146 Models 1) Lada Niva Chain Tensioner AUTOMATIC 2) Lada Niva Tension Shoe 1700 OEM 3) Lada Niva Vibration Damper 1700 OEM (This is what Spikes refered to as Single Point Injection TBI ?)
Niva 1700 i Multipoint injection. 21214-20, 2131-41 1) Lada Niva 21214 Multipoint Chain Tensioner AUTOMATIC 2) Lada Niva 21214 1700i Tensioner Shoe OEM 3) Lada Niva 21214 1700i Vibration Damper OEM
However...As Spikes,Jan and Steve (Ihar) have now pointed out if you want to fit new shoes and dampers you will also need (?) to fit new Valve Cover Gaskets, Timing Cover Gaskets and the Front Crankshaft Oil Seal.
This will in effect then be the 'Full Monty' of Tensioner upgrade.
I am still 'happy' to go ahead and order stuff (unless Ari you want to take over the process :-) :-)). I just need to know what people want. I can 'sort out' the part numbers for the gaskets and seal(if people want them) with Pavel who has been one of the most helpful persons (not forgetting Jan and Michelle )I have ever come across in the Motor Trade.
My thanks also to Spikes (Elder Statesman ?) Jan and Steve (Ihar)...hope the knee heals quickly so that you can come and fit my tensioner for me.
My thanks especially to those who have already offered to send me money...let's wait for the dust to settle, see how much all this is likely to cost each of us and then we can talk Roubles, Dollars, Yen, Pounds Sterling and if we really must Rands ! Regards to all at LOCSA, Keith and CERATOTH

I have all these in my garage spares box already and do not require more, but would advise you to get them for the job. Might be easier to order the seal and a full engine gasket set, and keep the other gaskets for future use???
You are welcome to do the order Keith, but if you get cold feet for what ever reason I'll take it over.

Does the complete gasket kit include the front crankshaft oil seal? It does not seem so from the picture

I take it you agree that it is advisable to replace used/very used/condition unknown damper and tensioners and to be on the safe side replace the gaskets and seal as I indicated? Please advise bearing in mind that all our nivas are at least 10yrs +

My thanks also to Spikes (Elder Statesman ?) Jan and Steve (Ihar)...hope the knee heals quickly so that you can come and fit my tensioner for me. Keith, I have a better idea. Why don't you come to me with some beers and dough nuts and see what my children's home is all about and we can do the minor surgery at the same time. The full gasket set Ari mentioned is about $20 and we'll worth it. Once I get home later I will draw up a full shopping list for everyone with numbers so you can just send Keith the numbers for the parts you need / want. Tjeers Steve

Thanks Steve. Lets hope that you will not be drawing up that shopping list from your hospital bed. If that is the case... which clinic, when are visiting hours and would you prefer grapes or doughnuts ? Hope all goes well with the diagnosis/prognosis. Regards to all at LOCSA, Keith and CERATOTH. PS Ari, feet not quite as cold as they were before Steve's offer of the shopping list :-)
