Hi guys, back again soon unfortunately for some help I drove a very bad and long bumpy gravel road, near my home the radio started to go on and off but was working again as I pulled in my driveway. The next day the lada refused the start. I could hear the starter motor straining to find enough power to turn. sounded as if the battery was dead. Had some trouble to get it run started but it took and came on. Checked the battery with a volt tester and it was at a whopping 12.5V Tried to start again today. at the first try the starter strained again to turn but went silent, the next few tries left me with hearing a clicking sound to the left (starter relay?) but that also went silent as I tried again. Now nothing happens as I turn the key Tested the battery again 11.7V which should be enough to start it? (the drop in volt are just due to a leakage that drains my battery if I forget to decouple the terminal....oops) any ideas as to what the problem could be? probably solenoid or starter relay?

Hi Hanno
It sounds as if you have a charging problem. !2.2 / 12.5v with the engine not running is fine, but with the engine running you need 13.8v or there about. 11.7v will probably not start the motor. You should not need to disconnect the battery unless you have an abnormal drain some where. Even with an alarm and radio memory you should be able to start even after a 3 week period. Check for 13.8 volt with the engine running and if you don`t get this suspect the alternator. Check the battery connections are clean and tight. If you remove the fuses 1 at a time you MAY see slight sparking when you remove the fuse feeding the problem circuit. It is pointless trying to find a fault if the battery is not fully charged and in good condition. Spikes mentioned alternations to the wiring between the starter and alternator etc which helps to make the charging circuit more efficient, but it is not something you should look at just now. This alteration to the wiring was mentioned first by Ari.

Hi Hanno,
Had a simalar problem 3 weeks ago with my Lada. When the battery is fully charged it will go and start for 4-5 day and then sound like the battery is flat. I fitted a battery gauge and relize that when any thing is on, even the the radio, the meter shown that the voltage is below 12v. When the vehicle is started, the meter shown just over 13v and is running allright, but when the flickers or lights are switched on the gauge dropped below 12v. I replaced the alternator last weekend and the problem is solved. I fitted a MotoPart universal alternator and now the voltage stay at 14.2v with the lights on highbeam and the battery stay full. Even after the Lada was standing for 5 days it started first time.
You might have either the battery is faulty or the alternator is not charging properly.
Regards.

Hi guys, Good news, it works again Got jump started and drove a bit and it charged fine, while revving I get 13.7V which I think is sufficient. Still a bit puzzled as to why it didnt start initialy because it was just after a 70km trip and the batery was 12.5V while the lada was switched off. Thus it was supposed to start but acted as if it was dead like a well trained dog. The next day the voltage had leaked to 11.7V. I however tried to fiddle with the wires to see if something was loose, think maybe that helped because after I then jumped the lada it worked 100%, charged and everything like it was supposed to. The power leak is an old problem that I had given up finding, I installed a relay switch to decoupled the battery from within the cockpit and will see how that works. as always, thx for your help guys!
