It probably has something to do with incorrect timing, or incorrect Valve clearances.
I assume you have made sure that the timing mark on the Camshaft pulley lines up correctly when the TDC mark at the Crankshaft pulley lines up with the mark on the Cover?
Also, you need to make sure that the Distributor pointer is facing the No 4 spark plug wire at the Distributor Cap, when the timings marks lines up as described above . Should the pointer face the No 1 spark plug wire at the Cap, the firing order will be incorrect with 180 degrees.

Is all your plug wires in the correct order. It sounds like incorrect ignition timing. When the engine is at TDC rocking number 4 is the rotor in the dizzy pointing to number 1?

No reason to feel stupid.
The Lada setup is indeed different from VW, and I only realized that the Lada setup is different from some other cars , when I have had a quick look at the Service Manual some time ago.

Had the same problem over the weekend....changed the plugs and never really looked at the firing order cause I've changed my Golfs plugs hundreds of times ...took a while to figure out what the firing order should be 2 days to be exact !!!

The plug wire connections are marked at the Lada distributor caps, so it is actually quite easy to connect the plug wires correctly.
For example, just connect the plug wire which comes from the No 1 Piston, to the "1" (casted number) connection point at the distributor cap, No 2 plug wire to number "2" (casted number) at the distributor cap, etc.

No, if you don't have a proper look, it is almost impossible to see the casted numbers at the distributor cap . Danie

steve - Would love to help, but my rally car picked up a lada problem (No 5th gear ) So I'm getting my non drinking buddies to come help me sort out the gearbox. If i get the same buds to help with the gearbox that help with the plug change on the lada it might take a bit more than a month just to get the box out of the car... ;D Charles no drinking & driving well not the rally car in anyway!

Charles, I guess you have access to an automotive lift at work, and that you only remove the Intermediate Shaft to get access to the Gearbox ?
Maybe replacement of the 5th gear within a couple of minutes is indeed possible - but I am quite convinced that any given professional firm will charge a couple of hours' labor for a job like that.

Hi Danie
On a golf box you can replace the 5th gear by only removing a cover on the back of the box.

@ Charles - Thought while it's not 100% we will change all the needed bearings etc....otherwise as you mentioned you can just remove the cover to work/replace 5th and 6th gear...

Hi
My lada will not start the next time unless I rev it up and then switch off.
I think its fuel related but any ideas will be welcome.

Hi Ari Do you have a mechanical or electric pump? Regards Vincent

He has a mechanical pump.
Ari it is a blocked needle and seat or a blocked main jet.
Take the air cleaner housing off and rev the car with your i=one hand and then block the intake with your other hand till just before if dies. rev it nice and high. Most of the time this sucks through the dirt. Do this a couple of times. If this does not work get yourself a can of carb cleaner and remove the carb and strip it fully and clean it.
Or bring it with you on the weekend and I will show you. (I have carb cleaner so you do not have to bring any)
