[/img]While trying to repair my Layshaft CV Joint and having a look at my 3rd gear problem, I have done the following; - Repainted the Gearbox Cross Member
- Had the two Propshafts checked, lubricated and repainted
- Scraped and de-greased the Gearbox and TC area
- Cleaned the Gearbox and TC area with Acetone
- Applied Rust Remover to eliminate rust and to protect the metal
The next step is to apply Stonechip to the Gearbox and TC area. I will post pics in this thread as I go along for those interested.

WTF is this when trying to post a pic? "error calling pre_post2 -- Can't call method "prepare" on an undefined value at /usr/local/etc/httpd/htdocs/index.cgi line 9616."

Hi Darrel
I presume you want to post a single picture as an attachment. In order to do that your picture must not exceed 1.4MB and don't preview your pic. Hope it helps?

Hi Darrel
Here is an updated "how-to" on posting pictures in batches:http://locsa.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=photos&action=display&thread=1214
If you want to post single pictures, Marius has outlined it for you above. I can only stress that you should not "use the preview" button. That WILL delete the picture. If all else fails. you can e-mail me the pics to post

Hi Darrel
You could try Flickr to post photos. I find it less complicated than Photobucket

Hi Darrel,
Looks like you sorted the posting out now. Is the creamy stuff the rust-preventative?

Hi Spikes, yes that white stuff is the rust converter which has a white streak when applied but turns a smooth black once the rust has been neutralised. It also acts as a primer for painting but in my case I apply Stonechip over it.

I'm sure that's cleaner than when it came out of the factory. Nice job mate! Always nice to see a Niva being loved like this.

Finally the Gearbox has been opened and the disengaging 3rd Gear problem found. As can be seen on the picture, the Selector Fork, Thrust Washer, Synchro Sleeve and 3rd Gear are worn. The Synchro Sleeve and 3rd Gear will be sent away to be re-machined but I am not so sure what the Gearbox guy is going to do about the Selector Fork and Thrust Washer. The rest of the Gearbox Components look fine and there is no sludge in the Gearbox or pieces of metal lying around, I think this is a good sign!

Correct. 3rd and 4th selector fork is the same. Is the synchro spring in one piece?

Save yourself a lot of pain and rather replace the parts with new ones...but I guess that's why you posted the last picture Marius

Finally the Gearbox is repaired and installed, here are some pics of the process; Repaired and cleaned Gearbox; Gearbox area clened and stonechipped; Installation pics; Repaired CV Joint working fine Gearbox installed To my surprise, the TC alignment was quite easy and passes all of the 3 tests in the manual. However the front propshaft nicks the Gearbox Crossmember for some strange reason. I will have it checked out by the Gearbox Guy (Auto-Matic Transmission Specialists 021 853 0730 in the Strand, highly recommended)

thats because there are no nuts on the TC mountings. The TC can move in it's brackets. And i see that you've got a 4-speed GB installed. is the crossmember 4-speed also? They are different from a 5-speed crossmember these bolts are to long. Cut or replace them. Are they M12? They seem M10 to me

Also you speedo cable has to be connected on the tc and not the gearbox. Otherwise the reading will be out.
