Hi All You may be interested in the progress I have made since my last post on the subject. When I stripped the motor there was 1 broken ring on no 4 cylinder and a lot of wear in the bores. The ring gap in the bore is supposed to be .3 of a millimeter maximum, I had 3mm. This would be why the compression was 850kpa instead of 1250. There was so much wear that it needed to be bored from +030 to +060. The head is ready to refit when the block and crank is received from engineering. In the meantime I have stripped every thing out of the engine compartment and repainted it as it was a very different color of white to the body. Here is a photo of it ready for the motor. Ronnie

Hi Ronnie
Is the engineering shops there faster than over here?

Hi Ronnie ,
I take it that you did not find the "better" 2nd hand engine, then? At least now you know exactly where you stand with the rebuild.

do you also fix the valve seats so you can run unleaded fuel?

Hi Spikes
I had no luck with a good second hand motor. There was plenty around but they were all already out of the cars so you had to take the sellers word for the condition they were in.

do you also fix the valve seats so you can run unleaded fuel? This was the big surprise. when I opened the motor it already had inserts fitted, and the valves except for two exhaust ones which were pitted and needed re cut. All the seats were in very good condition and only needed a light grinding. Ronnie

Hi Charles
How much do they charge in SA to re bore a 4 cylinder motor. To do the MG it is R1300.

Hi Charles and Sparky
Looks like if the transport was cheaper I would save money by having the rebore done in SA.

Hi Marius
I also wonder how the ex members rebuild is going. It used to keep changing direction as it jumped from one mod to another. I have nearly finished grinding in the valves on the MG. They charge so much here I decided to do them myself. I hate grinding valves as it never seems to come to an end.

Hi Ronnie
Labour costs in Europe is just CRAZY! DIY is the way to go - if you have the tools like you.

Hi All I have managed to get the block back from engineering so have managed to get the crankshaft, new pistons and new clutch assembled. So far everything has gone nicely with no problems. I could not finish the head as the 2 valves I had re cut ended up with a very sharp edge when I was grinding them. The new valves arrived today so that is tomorrows job. The biggest problem I have had is the temperature -1 and a lot of snow. Even the 3 kw heater in the garage could not raise the temp by more than a few degrees. Ronnie

I think you need a wood burning stove in the garage.

Hi All Spent 3 hrs grinding in the 2 valves, then finished assembling the head. After lunch fitted the head torqued it down fitted the rocker shaft and set the valve clearance. The motor is ready to install perhaps tomorrow depending on the weather. It has been hovering around -2 today and The garage felt very cold even with the heater on all day. I hate the cold!!!! Ronnie

Hi Charles
If I was working I would also pay someone to grind the valves. It must be the worst job to do when you are overhauling a motor.

Agreed. Is the gudgeon pins on that engine of the floating type?

Hi Charles
The MG is 1970 but the motor is a 18GG which dates to 1968, and the gudgeon pins are fully floating. They were not all the same it depends on the year.

I did most of the initial grinding with a drilling machine, slow speed, reversible with the end of the valve stem clamped in the chuck. Ronnie

Hi Conrad I lived in the UK for my first 28 years, but after nearly 40 years in SA you tend to forget what it was like. Outside is no problem as you can wrap up nicely. Inside is perfect with the central heating. In the garage is a problem. A 3kw industrial heater does nothing except consume electricity. If I had known before I laid carpets upstairs when I could still get into the manifold that feeds the radiators I would have installed a radiator in the Garage, but it is now too late . Today we were shopping and delivering the MGB radiator to have a new core fitted so all I managed to do was fit a relay for the ign fed circuits so the ign switch does not carry a heavy load. Ronnie
