Hi All I have fitted the composite gasket and have no more problems. It has taken so long as when the gasket did not arrive I phoned the supplier and got no answer. I sent email and got prompt reply that he had no stock and had refunded my money and left a message on Pay Pal. That is the one place I do not look for messages. Ordered from a different supplier and got it just before the end of the year. I now have 10 miles on the clock and the only problem I have had was the engine spluttering, and I had that before it was overhauled. It is not petrol related as the carbs were still full. I have changed the coil and ordered a condenser for the points. It only happens when the motor is hot, so any suggestions would be welcome. Ronnie

Hi Ronnie
It looks really neat. Have you measured the resistance on the coil when it is hot? I had that problem the other day. Secondary resistance is nice and low when the coil is cold but as soon as its warm it shoots up way to high. Fitted a new coil and problem solved.
Condenser may also play a role but it will not be affected as much by heat as the coil.
Plug wires may also build up resistance when hot.

The for life coolant that you use is it also a waterless coolant?

Hi Ronnie
In this order:
1. Defective coil 2. Burnt points in the regulator assembly
The MG is looking great

Looking at the pictures
I was taught never to fit a coil upside down
Cheers

Hi Spikes
New coil fitted this afternoon as I had one. However It spluttered again just outside the house when warm and I slipped back in the garage and found the petrol level in the front carb very high but just under the overflow pipe hence no smell and dry overflow pipe. I fitted a new needle and seat out of a spare set of carbs, so will see what happens tomorrow.

Hi Spikes
I also thought a coil should be up the right way, but all MGB`s from early 60`s to well into the 70`s were fitted as you see it in the picture. I should have mentioned I have ordered a condenser and the points are like new.

See schematic here: encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQk33YvUpHZVRT6sGdZSq5J1rm63Z26jm7ayzGw1JI7Oy81oveStwIf these points were burnt they could cause erratic voltage throughout the electrical system. Hi Spikes
I can`t remember when the MG changed from generator to alternator but I think it was about 1968. By the time mine was produced they were all Alternator. I am sure the old ones will all be changed by now. They even make an alternator that looks like a generator if you want the car to look original.

Hi Marius Unfortunately, these intermittent faults are the ones that take time to find. The high fuel level in the front carb, would allow the petrol to rise up into the jet and effectively choke the motor. (hopefully) Only time will tell. Ronnie

Hi Spikes
I had it out yesterday, and it is running like it was when it was new in 1970. I just managed it before the rain started. I will assume it was a joke when you mentioned Summer. ;D ;D ;D. Thinking about the problem with the Niva not wanting to start reminds me of the problem I had with the MG after the engine rebuild when it would not run (or start) when it was warm. It was perfect when cold but when the motor got hot it would grind to a stop and did not even attempt to fire. The problem here was with the black rotor arms which I am told have too much carbon in them and they break down as soon as they get warm. As sure as Bob after I bought a new (red) rotor arm it has run perfect. The big problem was the old rotor looked brand new, so it was not something I suspected. With a problem like that if you do not have a new one you can substitute, you can end up looking for days as I did looking for the fault.
Ronnie
PS I will take some photo`s soon.

Ronnie sent me this. Can't say that I blame him for staying indoors Hi Spikes What was worse, it went on like that for 2 weeks. Every day we got more snow. I was using about £100 a month on gas to keep the house warm. It is now spring and the sun sometimes shines and it is still cold. Ronnie

@ronny: consider yourself lucky: in winter the (gas)heating costst are +-400 euro a month here with the thermostat on 21°

Today it rained all day long and it was 10-11°C @ronny: consider yourself lucky: in winter the (gas)heating costst are +-400 euro a month here with the thermostat on 21° I stripped out the old boiler and fitted a combi boiler which does away with a storage tank and I think that helps a lot with the cost. I try to keep the temp at 22 deg and even that is hardly warm enough for me. Fortunately the house is small so this helps. A lot of our heating cost is paid for by the Government, a total this year of £385 so I had better not complain. All we can do now is wait for summer ;D Ronnie
