I wish I could! Flying down and travelling in EL with other people. At the end of April however, it's SA champs in EL and I'm planning a bit of a road trip, with a stop over with you guys. I'll let you know closer to the time. It also depends on whether I have a job by then...

Hi
thank you all. I found her in the junkmail, it was standing in sunninghill for quite some time. I do have a question though, between 80 - 100 there is a very loud whine and then it goes away. Is this normal?

The gearbox is noisy but that is a constant whine through all the gears and mainly due to lack of noise insulation material. A noise such as describe and at that speed "sounds" like T/C and gearbox alignment with something loose as well Have a look at the thread here: locsa.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=technical&action=display&thread=808It may have some pointers for you Also try and get one of the older NIVA hands on the reef to have a listen Better still join the social on Saturday and get various opinions Spikes

Thanks mate....The ute was a steal at only $500 Australian!! An old farmer had used it to run into town and back...only 48000 kilometres on it when I got it!! Bit of fixing and it was back on the road! I have bought original knobbly tyres from Russia (via ebay Germany!) for it, and will get them fitted an on asap She drives better than my white one....although that could have something to do with the 30x9.5R15 tyres on that one, that make it steer like a truck!!!! They are coming off soon and I am going down to 205/75R15's. I have 8 of the Lada Alloy rims, so lots of tyres needed!!

Yes Rohan
The smaller the tyre the easier the steering :)It is pity we never got the Ute here in South Africa.
You will find the 205 are a lot easier on the steering box as well.
We currently have access to 175/80X 16 Nankangs which are a pleasure to use.

I agree about the 205's....I currently have them on the ute and they steer much easier. The plan is to have the original 16" russian tyres on original rims for off-road and have 205/75's on the alloys for on-road....That way, I will have 8 road tyres and 16 off road tyres!!....Yes, i have collected original rims and now have a bucket load !!!! Just have to order more tyres!! I tried to get the Nankangs here, but they stopped bringing them into Australia Oh well....i can get the Russian 175/80-16 for about $168 delivered from Germany (with tube!!). this works out cheaper than any close equivalent tyre i can get here! I wasnt aware that you guys never got the ute... They are a real bonus when going away fishing.....No need to worry about where to put extra fuel cans!!

You may just get offers for those 16" rims They are very hard to come by here. I'm in the Forestry line and rarely travel with more that one passenger but at time have to cart awkward loads that would have made the ute far more practical for me.

They are quite useful!! I am surprised that Lada did not make it as a standard type of vehicle, rather than as a one off for some markets. I would have thought that the ute would have sold well pretty much in every market!! People can make offers on my rims...But the cost of shipping them to your part of the world would be shocking!! And I intend on keeping them We are reasonably lucky here in West Australia that the Niva does come up for sale fairly often. I bought one last year for parts....It is now completely stripped, boxed and in storage!! Rims turn up from time to time...found one with brand new tyre at the local rubbish tip ;D!!!!!!

Ha Ha...So did I Charles, but I chicken out on leaving it like that when I had to take her to get inspected for registration.....Did not want another reason for them to pick on me!! It may be camo again one day! The good thing about the red, is that it is a spray can job, so any touch ups are very easy at any time! I will post a pic of the camo for the other guys

Hi Rohan Very artistic. Would have kept it like that I like a lot Would realy also have our Lada one day painted bright so it can stand out in the crowd. Download a few sample Lada pics for later use. Cheerio Stephen

2 coats=5 cans!! Can get a pretty good finish if you prep properly....I went with satin so it hides more errors

Do it Charles!!!!....The good thing about spray cans is you can change the colour whenever you want to !! I used a rust-proof satin enamel
