Good Day My Niva is dead again - the previous mechanic that was overhauling my Niva`s motor, took me for a ride and possibly killed it forever!! About 1200 km of driving the overhauled Niva I noticed some oil leaking from the shaft front oil seal after some inspection I realized that the fourth cylinder lost its compression. I took the car back to the man who worked on the car he replaced the oil seal and told me to order a new head gasket. I got the car and realized that my radiator and bonnet was loose & bonnet and bull bar was scratched, probably because they put it on the ground without any protection. So i decided to take my Niva to a well known Garage for them to have a look under the bonnet, they found: Four different sized pistons with thick grooves which looks like they Grinned it with a hand held grinder to make room for valve clearance Piston Rings that was too small and some off them looked like it was self made The chain pensioner was made solid Ens. Can i have some advice. What will i need to do to fit lada pistons the cylinders? (Bore and/or Re sleeve remember the pistons was differently sized) I`ll order new pistons from pavel I want to fix everything i come across, while the motor is out and open (even possible future problems) Can you please advice me on what signs to look out for. Kind Regards from a sad & Angry Rudi

Hi Rudi
Sorry to hear about your problems. You do have the Consumer Protection Act behind you and can take legal action.
As for the Engine, get it to a good engineering shop to measure the cylinder bores, crankshaft journals and inspect the cylinder head for cracks, loose valve seat guides and warping.
You can order various sized overbore piston pistons once you know where you stand
Good luck

Hi Rudi
There are plenty of these crooks about. It is not nice to see some one being caught. Make sure you use a reputable garage even if it costs you more. I hope every thing works out right.

Rudi, have your mechanic messure the largest bore and have the block rebored if necesserary.
Pistons are available in 82,0, 82,4 and 82,8 mm. Order with pavel the correct size. Pistons rings are available in the corresponding sizes
check:
crancshaft and the bearings (correct size?) connecting rods half rings: are they still there or did the 'mechanic' forgot them by any chance? the valves valve sittings
order with pavel the parts you need

Hi Rudi
Sorry to hear about your problems. Take the engine to a good engineering shop and have them mike up the whole engine . They can then tell you what needs to be done.

Does not sound right at all. That half a centimetre smaller than what the 1.7 bore should be

Maybe you got a 1600 engine in your 2001 sidekick Were all the bores exactly the same? Ari

There should be NO NEED to re bore. It should be a straight forward resleeve. To get to 79.4 from 82.?? a thicker walled sleeve was fitted. To get back to 84.?? thinner walled sleeves are required What is the nominal dia with the sleeves removed on all 4 cylinders? That should be your starting point

I agree with Spikes here but I dont know how they remove a sleeve. Maybe the only way is to bore it out. Ari

I helped my father rebuilding a Morris Oxford engine and those sleeves were pressed out and new ones in. I suppose the block was sleeved from the beginning. I suppose you are correct when a block has to be bored out and then re-sleeved.

Hi Spikes
They will bore out the old sleeves, press in the new ones then bore the sleeves to suit the pistons. You are correct with cars which had sleeves from new they were pressed out. I think the Peugeot 404 was like that ?
Ronnie.

wet-sleeved was the term for those engines that came fitted with sleeves?

Something is still bothering me about Rudi's engine... the bore came down to approximately 1.6 size pistons. The only way the swept volume could come to 1500cc would be a longer crankshaft throw?

Maybe they just thought it was a 1500.

Good Day Gents, Just to get back to Rudi's original post. I was scanning the threads to see who can give my Lada an once over and tell me what needs to be done, as the last thing I want to do is take it to some punk who is going to mess up my car. I was looking for a list of guys that are qualified to work on Lada's or even a "recommended" list of guys. Does something like this exist. Rudi, I know someone who knows someone . He can also put large things in holes that are too small . Cheers Michael

Thanks guys
Its not really a 1500 , its a bit of (hipperbool) i think its probably a 1600 unless the stroke is different. Will check if it is correct. Will you recommend putting in a new oil pump if yes what oil pump, cant figure out what to get at pavels parts list there's a repair kit, oil pump shaft with bearings and just the oil pump
Any help?
Regards Rudi

nivaguy, Michael you have Mike close to you in Durbanville @rudi If you still have an original NIVA pump and the casings are OK, then the overhaul kit would suffice.See my PM
