Good point Danie
Though the TC mounting bolts are not the same.. The one mount has bolts that do not allow adjustment.
Maddy, it pays to check out that washer.

Just another thought. There is also a bush (spacer) inside the Gearbox - close to the gearbox Flange. Page 227 of 584 indicates this bush (spacer) as item 23 - which could be one of two bushes : 1. Part Number 2121 - 1701194 2. Part Number 2123 - 1701194 Which makes me wonder - do these two bushes have the same length, and if not - maybe the incorrect bush on many Ladas out there is the reason for the gaps between the Flanges and Doughnuts Danie

Danie,
I still maintain that Moegoes are the primary reason that Lada's break. That little difference may well be it.
Perhaps Ventz can provide insight.

Hi Vincent
It is quite possible that the incorrect bushes / spacers (if there is indeed a difference in length) have been installed during initial assembling in Russia.
Those spacers do not wear, and I can not think of any reason why it ever had to be replaced during a gearbox rebuilt in South Africa.
It is clear that Ladas have been assembled by using parts from different suppliers in Russia and elsewhere, so I guess anything is possible.

Danie

Hi Maddy
I think Danie is onto something with regard to the thrust washer in the TC. I am not so sure about the bushes in the gearbox as the shoulder on the flange may prevent the flange to go deeper into the housing?

Hi Maddy
Looks like the last time I did not look close enough ;D
Some work was done on your TC as the dust covers on the flanges has been removed. Now that would not make up for the 2cm gap, but it may well be that the thrust ring has been removed. The dust covers looks similar to the one on the flange on the gear box.

Hi Maddy ,I just took a photo of a lada gear box rear shaft and on this one it has this set up and it was a good working gear box and was removed because of Fiat Twin Cam Motor and Fiat Gear Box Conversion .However this info will not help with the Gap but will let you see what is meant to fit on the rear gearbox Output shaft. This is just one small part and may help you in some small way Will be interesting to see if Danie is on the money with these washers . Will post a pic shortly of the Photo i took for you .Cheers Trev.

Hi Guys Thank you so much for all your advice. Right now all I can say is WOW!!!! I forgot that there are actually such friendly and helpful people out there. We (my dad and I) are taking you advice and are going to figure this out. I will keep you updated on what we find when we check all that you have mentioned. Cheers for now Maddy PS Do all Lada's give this many hassles or is mine just acting up with all those bullet holes?

Hi Danie
I did check the thrust washer was present in mine before doing the mod. I am not sure if the thrust washer was missing if you could refit the flange without destroying the seal. Even if all these parts were missing I doubt if you could make up +- 20mm needed to get the T/C into the centre of the adjustment. I must admit I thought I would have found something missing in mine as my gap was very small. I still don`t know why as ever thing looks correct. I am however gratefull that my problem has been fixed after trying for longer than I can remember.

Maddie ,I was just looking at your Facebook Page and it looks like your Gearbox output shaft nut is in the right place as there is just enough room to fit the Bush and circlip on the end of the shaft .And it would seem to me that if those spacer washers were missing there would be a lot more shaft sticking out past the securing nut .May be you take of the botton braket and try to slide the T/C all the way forward first then take care of the bottom braket later and if that proves fruitless then it simply looks like the mounting studs are clearly in the wrong place i think, hope you get it sorted soon .Cheers Trev .

I dont know how you had or where you found the patience when fixing your lada. I am now so frustrated as all I want to do is drive and have some fun.
Trevor - thanks for the pics. As I said before, I am taking everything into account right now and knowing my luck it is something small that has been overlooked.
Cheers Maddy

Hi Maddy
I am retired so I have all the time in the world. The Niva is my toy so it was not essential for everyday use. I must admit it is now a pleasure to drive. I think if I was sure the intermediate shaft was correct, the other 3 mountings were also correct, and I could find no other problem I would go the same route as Trevor mentioned and I would drill and mount new studs to suit. Hopefully there is enough movement on the sliding splines on both prop shafts to accommodate this. I think a lot of the problems we have were the result of other owners not carrying out services at the correct time or not carrying them out at all. I am sure some of the problems were also caused by owners not knowing where to source spares, and then things were just botched to keep the vehicle running.

Hi Trevor Just out of interest - everything behind the nut on your very clear pics except for the rubber seal has changed somewhat on the newer versions of the Niva. As mentioned before the spring and also the circlip has been deleted and the metal centering ring has been replaced by a rubber one. Here is a pic from the 2007 manual. Marius Attachments:

Hi guys Here is an update of what is happening. Tomorrow it all starts again. We are going to drop everything (TC, GB etc) and basically do a rebuild taking into account all the advice you guys have given. Hopefully by the end of this we will have sorted out the problem and I will be able to drive her again. I really really hate the Kia . Thanks and cheers Maddy

Hi Marius Sadly I still wont be able to drive her this weekend as I am waiting for parts. As for the Kia...well that darn vehicle is running and I am told it is better than any other 4x4 including the Lada. I need my baby up and running to show a certain someone that a Kia is a showboat and not a masterpiece 4x4 Cheers Maddy

Hi Guys Update Zombie is up and running like a dream. After stripping and putting back together (thanks Ventz for the parts), adding a few spacer washers and spacers between TC and the body Zombie is quieter and runs smoother than before. Now it is time for fun and games Thanks to everyone, your advice was and still is invaluable. Regards Maddy

Charles, Zombie was washed and polished after the run but sadly that didnt last long...Less than 24 hours later I took it through a small river and a semi dried up dam (great fun by the way). All that fun green and brown slime added a strange colouring to my already green Lada...hehehe. My water account is going to look scary if I carry on this way Marius, thanks for all your help and advice
