Hi Marius
Not very inspiring, I would rather redo the Niva dashboard top.

Hi Marius and Ari
Assuming we could get a RHD one I am sure I could do something with it. That is providing you can find one that is not eaten by the Sun. The one thing in the photo that I would like to see clearer is the indicator switches etc, as it looks very like the Niva one.

Talking about windscreens- My windscreen has lots of little burrs from what looks like anglegrinder sparks. I want to get new wiper blades, but I want to get these burrs off first so that the new blades don't get shredded too. Anyone know how to make glass smooth again?
This one looks like toughie.

Hi Darryn
The only thing you could try is a wall scraper which takes a Stanley knife blade. This should knock the tops off and then your blade will last. I even use one when the glass door to the oven gets badly splattered when roasting. It takes 2 minutes to clean the door instead of hours.

Hi Darryn After Ronnie's clean-up use jeweler's rouge to get it really smooth. You should be able to get the rouge from any good jeweler's shop. Failing that you can try burnishing/buffing compound but that tends to leave a oily residue. regards Spikes

Hi Ronnie Since you are looking for some inspiration with regard to rebuilding your dashboard I thought I'd post another one from the Fiat family. As far as SUV's are concerned this particular design (Italian of course!) is one of my favourites and the car is actually quite capable as well - for an SUV ;D The new generation Fiat Panda >> Regards Marius Attachments:

Hi Ronnie Life would have been much easier if we could drive on the right side of the road (no more RHD steering box issues). I won't mention names but trust those guys to drive on the wrong side of the road and now we are stuck with it ;D Regards Marius

How many members would want a new dashboard if it was possible to remould / redesign it?

I would, depending on the price! I've had some experience with molds and the cost to make one will outweigh the potential to make a return.
That said- what do you have in mind?

I'm still pondering this. I hope to open the dash up tomorrow to have a good look around the mountings and such. Then I will have some red wine and ponder it some more. ;D

A boat builder in the village uses a nifty polystyrene method of producing plugs for moulds. He can then look at some of the plastics or fibreglass as material options. - but if one goes this route, then you might as well design the dash to include storage binnacles etc.
Having seen Ronnie's dash it does look very good.

Had the dash resurrected. Plastic Repair Specialists - Michael 0117929369 or 0828201801 , they do an excellent job! Before After Before After Before After This was posted by Douw in his thread: Re: Toyota 4Y and Cressida Auto RWD transplant but I think it also belongs here for those interested in rebuilding dash boards. Hi All I had a request from Denis for info on rebuilding a dash. I am replying here so everyone can keep up to date. Denis As your Niva is a 1600 I do not think the way I fixed mine will be as easy on the 1600. You can check this thread for the way various members have tackled the problem. Douw has posted very recently a way to return the dash to as like new, at a cost of I think about R1500. This may be a lot of money, but if you wish to finish the inside nicely this is a good option. Here is a pic showing the top of mine. Ronnie Attachments:

Nuwenivanaas sent some pics of a near pristine lada dash.
I wonder if anyone has tried Qbond to repair the cracks.
I have 1 or 2 small cracks that I want to fill before they get bigger.

Hi Vincent At least Qbond does not melt the dash material. I have used it to fix the surrounding piece at the air vents. One of the Qbond fillers should fill cracks neatly.

Hi Vincent
The problem with the dash is once you have one crack the rest is ready to go the same way. you will find the covering is all brittle. There is little you can do to repair it that does not stand out like a sore thumb.

Hi Vincent
I just had a look at the finished dash that Douw posted and if you have R1500 to spare and the dash is very bad and you cannot get away with making a seperate top, his supplier has made a very good job

Hi all.
I have just about taken my dash out, but I seem to have hit a crux with removing the throttle-adjuster-nob . The only way I see it done is by removing the whole cable (going to the carb) from it's sleeve with the nob and that just does not seem to be right. Any ideas on how to do it?

Hi Jaco
Disconnect the inner and outer at the carb and then pull carefully out as you remove the dash. It might pay to put a little grease on the outer where it passes through the grommet in the bulkhead so it does not pull the grommet out as well.
