Yip that is heavy. What is the route like? Lots of stop and idle or open road?
Is the choke flap fully open?

No heavy traffic, quite a bit of open road. As for the choke flap I am going to go with a firm maybe. (I consulted the manual so as not to seem too stupid by asking straight out what you meant but couldn't find anything. As far as I can tell it idles correctly at juuuust under 1000rpm if that helps.

Take the air filter top cover off and look into the carb while the choke is in. the choke butterfly should be vertical.

There is the old story about the old lady with the Morris Minor 1000 complaining about heavy fuel consumption, The Leyland garage checked everything and all settings were reset and tested. According to the old Lady the "Minor" was still very heavy on fuel. Eventually the Senior mechanic went on a drive with the old lady driving.... first thing she did when she got into the Minor was to pull the choke full out and hang her handbag on the choke knob. You don't carry a handbag Damian??

Yes, the choke butterfly is vertical while the choke is in.

Hi all.
Would traveling in high or low range make a difference to fuel consumption?
Damian. As you are always turning left hang your handbag on the indicator lever.

Lol SJ This is a guess but I would assume that low range would have a negative effect on fuel consumption.. With that said I would also assume that the distances travelled in low range would be much less.. But relatively speaking surely low range would use more gas? D

Low range will increase fuel consumption. I've not read the full thread, but I assume your brakes aren't sticking? Regards, John

Hi Hoodoo,
I just had it serviced and the brake discs were replaced so I am sure that the brakes aren't sticking.
Much thanks,
D

D Front small lever all the way forward and back one all the way rearwards. At 100km/h you should be just under 3500 rpm in 5th.

Just checked with the mechanic.. He did adjust the timing as it was out when I took it in for the service. He adjusted it according to the manual.
Cheers,
D

So you should be good to go then, wheel alignment will have to be horribly out to affect fuel consumption by 45%
After a run check and compare the spark plugs to the pic that Charles posted
Rich jetting will show up there
Beyond that I am at a loss.

I am getting wheel alignment checked tomorrow and a compression test done on Monday.

Damian a thing I remembered today and I had a problem with it. Valve clearance. Will have a terrible effect. Have it set a 0.15mm for both inlet and exhaust when cold. Im sure that is the problem as that is the only thing left.

Thanks Charles! Really glad there is something else that it could be.. hehe I will get that checked asap. I'd love to check it myself but I don't think my mechanical skills are anywhere near checking that yet. hehe D

Perhaps silly questions: When you take the cover off the air filter box, does the idle speed rise, fall, or remain the same? What size tyres have you got on? Regards, John

I will check about the idle speed, not sure off hand.
I have Wrangler 205/75 R15 97 T's which as far as I know are slightly wider than the normal Lada tyres so that could be effecting consumption but surely not 5km/l
Thanks John,
D

It is much lighter to drive now and I don't seem to be using as much fuel.. I don't know exactly what my consumption is yet as I haven't had time to drive it enough.
I am still getting a petrol smell inside the cab.. And after I park it in the garage there is quite a strong petrol smell in the garage. So I am guessing I still have a leak. Any ideas where I should be checking?
Much thanks,
Damian

I wonder if your metal fuel pipes that run under the car have not been kinked and are leaking Ari

Check that and also remove the cover over the tank and check. Maybe your Niva isnt heavy on fuel just leaking it out.

A strong smell of petrol like that is a 100% tell tale of a leak somewhere. I would start with the fuel separator box (chances are you may not even have one fitted) and see if it is broken. You should also have a breather pipe from the box that ends over the fuel cap. Inspect the fuel filler neck and all the connecting hoses.
From there I would inspect the tank itself - see if all the connections are tight. Whilst the car is idling - follow the lines from the tank up to the fuel filter and from the fuel filter to the carb.

If you've got the time, remove the plate over the tank, and the right side panel to expose the system. There's several breather pipes and jubilee clips that could usefully be checked. Regards, John

Thank you all.. Hopefully I will be able to check this weekend.
When I took it in for a service he did find a leak of sorts around the fuel filler and breather pipe and replaced the clamps. There must be another one somewhere.
Thank you for all the tips.

The rubber, plastic hoses may be perished, I would replace them all.
