Nikki
Take the NIVA to your usual mechanic, these guys are taking your for a ride and WILL bugger up something.
With help from the forum your usual mechanic should be able to get to the bottom of the problem.
Between the Radiator chap and his very good mechanic they are buggering your NIVA up beyond salvage

Nikki. Like Jan says its not a big job. Cam cover must come off first to make shure its not a small problem and so u can have a propper look at the chain timings etc. Dont let them take the head off yet. To bad there are not many owners close by to help u. It takes less than a hour (me a rookie) to remove the head so dont they must not charge for more than 2 hours labour.

Hi Nikki
I would do exactly as Spikes suggests and take the Niva to your usual mechanic. There is NO need to remove the head at this stage.

Your Niva looks great. You must fix it and keep it. I trust there is not too much wrong.

I am thinking that they undid the tensioner by mistake and retightened it. So the chain is not tensioned.

Hi Nikki
Sorry to hear about your problems. You have great advice on the forum, you also have availibility of parts at great prices (Pavel), so please, do not sell your vehicle. Like Ronnie said, take your car away from these guys, and get your mechanic to look at your car, and he can then get all the help he needs from our LOCSA guys. Take it one step at a time, stay cool.

Hi Guys Thank you again for your further comments and ongoing assistance which is always appreciated. Thank you also for saying such nice things about the lovely Nikita. After looking at the position of the water pipes in Jan’s latest link I am also inclined to think that the tensioner could have been loosened/removed by the radiator guys without them realizing what it was. Unfortunately, not having Nikita with me at the moment, I can’t see exactly where all the water pipes, jubilee clips, etc., fit in relation to the tensioner but I’m going to have a look tomorrow and decide what to do. One thing’s for sure – I won’t be leaving her with these ‘wallies’! Jan are you suggesting that I get the chain tensioned without actually getting it checked? Thank you all again – I’ll keep you posted! NIKKI

Nikki, the timing must be checked before tensioning the chain or starting the engine

The cam to crank timing that is, as well as the ignition timing.

Thanks again guys! The latest on this is that I went to see the radiator guy this morning and when I asked what was happening to Nikita he responded that he had already explained that a quote was being prepared (3 days so far). This time he not only referred to the head coming off but also that the engine had to come out as well!!!!!!! I told him that I didn’t accept this – quoted what you guys said – and told him I wanted my car back. He undertook to tow it back to his premises for me. Thinking about it, I should probably have waited for the quote to see what they were planning to charge to fix a problem that I never had before having a thermostat fitted !!!!!!!!! Unfortunately, I’m now getting concerned that it’s not so much a case of trying to rip me off but that they may know something I don’t and that the engine may have suffered some damage as a result of the drive from the radiator place to the mechanics workshop about 700 metres away. I will try to get to the bottom of this on Monday and take it from there. NIKKI

I hate situations like this. Charles I agree. The only slight ray of hope is Nikki says they drove the car from the radiator place to the mechanics. The other side of the coin is if the motor was making a noise why drive it and not tow it. Ronnie

Hi Guys I thought about this issue long and hard during the past week and after much deliberation I finally decided to sell the lovely Nikita to my neighbour. If I’d had a mechanically minded hubby, or if Jan was down the road, or if some of you guys were closer, it would have been a different story but, unfortunately, this wasn’t the case. So, after six years of trying to fix one problem only to end up with another it finally got to me. I still have no idea of the extent of the damage but when I visited the radiator guy again recently and asked him to explain in detail why the head should come off and the engine out he said that this was the only way to get at the chain. However, his friend the mechanic knew quite well that the front cover had to come off as we discussed this at the outset when we were all together so I’m not buying this. I also asked him outright who loosened the nut, because I am now convinced that this is what happened, but obviously he is not accepting any liability and it would be very difficult for me to prove anything. If the damage is not too great my neighbour will score big time but whatever the problem he will be more than capable of sorting it out with the assistance of all the wonderful Lada owners out there!! He plans to examine the chain this weekend and I will let you know the outcome. He has also promised to keep Nikita in the style she’s become accustomed to and, on the bright side, I understand that she’s very happy in her new garage which she is sharing with a V8 Chevy SS called Brutus!!!!!! ;D Thank you again for all the incredible support and assistance on this issue and in the past! NIKKI

Hi Nikki I am sorry that you have decided to sell the NIVA, but fully understand your reasoning behind the decision. I do hope you will remain as a member of the forum? Owning a NIVA is not a prerequisite And please convince the new owner to join up at the forum Regards Spikes
