Jan - Thank you so much for the great pics and explanatory notes – I really appreciate it. Unfortunately, I live in a very small town and there is no such a thing as a Lada mechanic here. I’m seriously considering my options at the moment and if the local guys could give me an idea of what I would be likely to get for a non-running Niva I would really appreciate it. Apart from the latest disaster I think that Nikita is probably one of the better Nivas left in SA and she has been really well looked after. Thanks again for the ongoing assistance. NIKKI

NIKKI I presume you are considering selling then. Depends on the condition of the body and the rest of the drive train. If you post some pictures we could give you a price range. Ari

Unfortunately, selling Nikita is one of the options right now.
I only have one picture that really shows anything but working on the assumption that everything is good what could I expect?

Nikki the Niva is such a simple design that any good mechanic should be able to work on it without any issues. The repair manuals are there so if the mac can read he should have no problems. The only thing you have to suss is how much of the person in front of you is Grease and how much is Monkey. If you think Monkey - run!
Seriously though reconsider selling and try to get the guys who stuffed it up to at least foot part of the bill.

this could work backwards, the mechanic could think that you are trying to make him pay for an existing damage. Nikki would bether say: 'how can WE resolve this without costing it ME any extra money'. If the mec is any willing i'm sure something can be worked out. It's not so difficult to sort out these timing issues

I think its time for some exploration surgery. That bolt has a lock washer on it. Maybe the previous guy never locked the bolt with it. Stuff likr that does happen. Also bolts can come loose. Charles I agree with Charles here some opening up needs to happen before any BIG decisions are made. Ari

Thanks again guys for all the comments. One of the things that will influence any decision is how much I can sell a non running Niva for so I would appreciate some indication of this. The body is rust free and I presume the drive train is good. At the moment I'm waiting for these guys to tell me how much they are planning to charge me for the opening up. Another thing that I'm worrying about is at what stage do I find out whether there has been any damage to Nikita's engine? NIKKI

Only once they have opened her up will you know what went wrong.
The MAX I think you will get for a non runner is R12 000 to R15 000 while for a runner you are looking at R20 000 to R30 000.
Opening up should take about 1-2 hours and then the same for closing her up again, hope that helps.

Ari - I've tried 4 times to attach the photo but without success. I have done it before and I know that I mustn't 'preview' it but I keep getting an error message for some unknown reason. . NIKKI

Hey Folks
Support Nikki in her hour of need. She does not need us squabbling over a huge decision that she has to make.
@ Nikki did you get a quote to open up and see what went wrong?

Thanks Mike I don't have any really technical queries at this stage, more general ones, but these could come later. In the meantime I'd like to keep all these queries under this thread so I don't lose myself!! Guys - I'm still waiting for my quote - which is to remove the timing chain cover and check the chain as far as I'm concerned - but I've just been told by the radiator guy that he hasn't received it yet but they will have to remove the head as well. How can they know at this stage that the head must come off without having seen the chain? Are they trying to pull a fast one are do they realize already that they have done some serious damage? Hi Nikki
It is not necessary to remove the head to check the timing and reset the tensioner. Only reason why they might want to take the head off would be to check for bent valves and possible damage to the pistons Seems as if they know something they did not share with you

they just have to perform a compression test to check for any bend valves. But first the timing chain cover must come of (not even necassery) to check the timing. With any luck it's just the tensioner that has come loos for any dark reason

Thx guys. Although they will obviously know about the compression test they have mentioned removing the head twice and this is making me very suspicious and nervous. NIKKI

Hi Nikki
This whole story stinks. Do not let them give you the cost of removing the head until you know the full story. At this stage the head should not be removed.
